We all want to find happiness and be free from suffering. Happiness comes from positive mental states and actions and suffering from the opposite. The twelve-part process of dependent arising shows how actions underlain by ignorance propel us from one rebirth into another, keeping us trapped in suffering, and how through understanding reality correctly we can break this cycle. The twelve links that make up this chain of causes and effects are an extension of the four noble truths, the heart of the Buddha's teaching, and demonstrate in particular the connection between true suffering and true sources of suffering. This oral teaching by Geshe Sonam Rinchen is based on the Rice Seedling Sutra and the twenty-sixth chapter of Nagarjuna's Treatise on the Middle Way.

About the Author
Geshe Sonam Rinchen (1933–2013) studied at Sera Je Monastery and in 1980 received the Lharampa Geshe degree. He taught Buddhist philosophy and practice at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala, India, as well as in dharma centers around the world.

Disappointed

I was very disappointed with this book. With a plain, straightforward title, I had hoped the writing style would be the same. But it seems the author's goal was to shed light on Tibetan sources that dealt with karma, rather than to shed light on karma itself.

I often felt he was explaining about mandalas that symbolize karma, rather than explaining karma.

Karma is a complex topic. I don't feel I understand it any better after having wrestled with this book.

Good introduction on the twelve links of D.O.

If you are looking for a good introduction to the twelve links of dependent origination, this is a very good book. D.O. is a central concept of the Buddha's teachings.

Like many topics in Buddhism, however, one is given a list -- six of this, eight of that, etc. I often find myself asking: "what did the Buddha mean by 'form & function?'" This book tells you in plain English. I'm a big fan of Ruth Sonam's style.

While this book may not answer all of your questions about karma, if you're a beginner like me, it's a good start.

About the Author
Mark Griffith is a professor of classics and of theater, dance, and performance studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Albany, CA.  Trained at Cambridge, Griffith is an enormously accomplished expert on the Greek Tragedies. Glenn W. Most studied at Harvard, Oxford, and Yale and is currently professor of ancient Greek at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, and a visiting member of the Committe on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.  He divides his time between Pisa, Florence, and Chicago. Richmond Lattimore (1906–1984) was a poet, translator, and longtime professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr College. David Grene (1913–2002) taught classics for many years at the University of Chicago. He was a founding member of the Committee on Social Thought.

Very Readable Modern Translations

For many years when I taught two or three of the plays in this volume, I used an edition which is now out of print. Unfortunately, many of the translations are done in a kind of pseudo-Shakespearean, which means that the translations are denser than they need to be. The translations in this edition are very readable and effective for classroom use. A nice job translating and editing.

I'm On MY Way To Owning My Own Restaurant!

My Mom ordered this book for me, as I was thinking of owning my own place. I have been in the restaurant business for several years, as a worker, and as a cook, and as a store manager. I thought I knew pretty much all I needed to know, but after reading this book, I am amazed at just how much MORE I needed to learn! This book has given me much more insight to more ways of obtainning the funds for starting out, and all the differrent things needed to know for employee hiring, inventory, money managment, and even how to find the best location! The book is also very true and realistic as to the difficulties occurred along the way to owning, and running a sucessful business. Thanks a lot "Books for Dummies" people for getting this book on the market. I know it will help a lot of folks who are thinking about opening their own restaurant. I am ready and anxious to get going on the road to owning my own pizza restaurant! Look for my place, SOON!

Thinking of starting a restaurant? Buy this book.

When my wife and I decided three months ago to open our own restaurant, this book was our very first purchase. If you're thinking of opening one, it should be yours, too.

"Running A Restaurant For Dummies" is packed with useful tips on starting and running a restaurant: things like choosing your "concept", creating a menu, selecting the right staff and building a loyal clientelle. It's an easy read, with everything broken down into easily digested chunks and plenty of funny anecdotes along the way. The authors do a good job of getting across the glamour and the drudgery of the restaurant business, and most important, they get across the message that the restaurant business is just that, a business. Cashflow, inventory, marketing, hiring and firing -- take it from me, you'll spend at least as much time worrying about this stuff as you will about the food.

I must have bought a dozen books on the restaurant business before we opened. This was the only one I read cover to cover. Five weeks after opening, we're doing great business and getting great reviews. We regularly have to turn people away on Friday and Saturday nights. At least part of that success we owe to this book. Thinking of starting a restaurant? Buy this book. It's the best fifteen bucks you'll ever invest.

I have over 28 years in the restaurant business and I am finally preparing to open my own restaurant and this book has become my personal bible. The authors really know what they are talking about and they give you all the tools to help you open a successful business. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

I really liked this book

I give The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript by Nicholas C. Zakas a rating of 5 stars. This book deserves no less with its concise nature and very well explained concepts.

First off, I must mention that this book is not intended for beginners. Object Oriented Programming (OOP) takes a different approach in the JavaScript language. In order to fully grasp the content of this book, it is highly recommended that you have a good understanding of OOP concepts and have developed an OOP vocabulary. My suggestion is to first learn a solid OOP language like Java or C++ first before beginning with this book. Just knowing JavaScript alone may not be enough.

I previously mentioned that this book is concise. Weighing in at 92 pages, it's a featherweight in the realm of programming books. You might think it should take more pages to cover such an advanced topic as OOP in JavaScript. But, as exemplified in this book, that is certainly not the case.

The topics in this book are covered just enough to get a good understanding of them. Furthermore, as you progress through the book, what you learn early on will be used again in a later section. So, what you learn in Chapter 1 will be used throughout the rest of the book. Each chapter builds upon the previous one. As you work through the examples, you will get plenty of practice of the things you previously learned.

The author's writing is very easy to read. It's not easy to find a programming book that is so well written. The author does a very good job of not going beyond the scope of the current topic. Furthermore, he sticks to a consistent vocabulary that should be quite familiar with readers familiar to OOP principles.

I can honestly say that this book has improved my understanding of JavaScript. After reading it, I was able to understand why the syntax of JQuery and AngularJS works, instead of just memorizing how to write the code. Those two libraries have some interesting syntax that might look foreign to someone who doesn't understand how JavaScript deals with objects. Because it has been so useful to me, I plan to keep a copy of this book in my personal library.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of OOP in JavaScript. If you have experience with OOP through another language such as Java and C++, then this book can certainly enrich your JavaScript coding practices. This was my personal experience with The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript.

Great intro to Javascript for OO programmers

I needed to learn JavaScript quickly for a project at work, coming from a .NET background. This book was perfect. These days I spend more time with JavaScript than .NET and I'm truly enjoying it. I'm still impressed by how much information Zakas could pack into this scrawny (less than 100 pages) book.

I singled out this book because of the title, and was not disappointed. Javascript can be pretty daunting at the outset (if you come from the strongly-typed world), but once you get the hang of it, it feels quite liberating.

This book definitely helped me understand how OO can be implemented in Javascript. Strongly recommended.

Nice Overview of Key Parts of the JavaScript Language

This is a concise and very helpful book that describes many key aspects of the JavaScript language in clear, easy to understand language.

Two points:

1) Crockford's classic "JavaScript the Good Parts" can help you understand why JavaScript is a tricky language, but I find this book more useful when I simply want to understand how the language works and how it should be used. After reading it, some of the more complex parts of Crockford's book were much easier to understand.

2) There are many fancy things you can do with JavaScript and functional programming that are not covered in this book. But if you are coming from an object oriented language like C# or Java, and you are trying to get a handle on JavaScript, you might well find this book invaluable.

The text is clean and easy to understand, and yet it is not simplistic. This is not a book for someone trying to learn how to program, but instead for good programmers who are trying to understand JavaScript. Zakas has written a number of books on JavaScript, each a bit better than the last. By the time he go to writing this one, he knew more or less exactly what he wanted to say, and how to say it.

This book is THE BOMB

I use this book in my IEP classes for intermediate ESL students. The organization and structure is as complete as it gets. It starts by addressing common fears of public speaking, replacing those fears with more positive outlooks, and then helps the teacher to build students' confidence by introducing and explaining each step that is needed to deliver an organized, well-researched, interesting, and powerful speech, while leaving plenty of flexibility for students to choose topics that are special and interesting to them. (Each chapter also includes a pronunciation exercise, though I supplement these with exercises from English Pronunciation Made Simple [Dale & Poms, Longman, 2005] that more directly target the needs of the current class.) Highly recommend this book!

Missing cd

I don't like my purchase because the book has a lot of notes writing in it and the cd was missing, and they never told me that until the book arrived. As a student, the cd was so important for me because I had to listen the cd in order to do my homework, so that situation was too uncomfortable and make me feel I have been fooled.
