This edited volume seeks to bring supplementary education (e.g., cram schools, private tutoring, etc.) 'out of the shadows' by presenting country case studies that examine such issues as the enrollment rates in supplementary education and the factors that influence those rates, as well as the impacts of supplementary education enrollment on family time use and resources. Country reports are presented for Japan, Turkey, China, Vietnam, Brazil, Canada, Australia, the United States, and Germany. Also presented is a chapter comparing the policy construction of supplementary education in the United States and Korea and a chapter analyzing family capital as a determinant of supplementary education in 17 countries.
