Excellent reference for engineers working on the numerical analysis of solid polymers

This book should be a mandatory reading for every engineer seeking to understand the mechanics of solid polymers and how to produce sound, accurate numerical models. Chapter 6 provides a clear description of linear viscoelasticity. Chapter 7 goes into the plasticity models, often used to model some polymers; and describes their range of applicability. Chapter 8, in particular, is a very well crafted and detailed explanation of different viscoplasticity models. So, in summary, I strongly recommend Dr. Bergstrom's book as a fundamental reference.

Nice, but why not in color as the preview indicated

The contend of the book is excellent, but I was really disapointet when I discovered, that it was not in color - the preview shows pages with color graphics, and the book is full of graphics with descriptions such as, the blue curve....the red curve...and this is challenging when it is all gray scaled.

A different breed of science fiction

Arthur C. Clarke was a master wordsmith. He wrote amazing science fiction novels that took the incomprehensible and made it imaginable, all while writing with gorgeous poetic style that greatly improves the emotional impact.

One of the reasons I love this novel is that it, like H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine", is a more contemplative novel. It contemplates the solar neutrino problem (which was solved around 2001, ironically enough), interstellar travel, space colonization, culture clash, and humanity ourselves.

One review I read on another site of this book said, "By far the most optimistic take on a post-apocalyptic scenario ever," and frankly, I agree totally with that statement. Without giving too much away, one thing I love about this book is its ending: it manages to be very much a happy ending, but also still heart-breakingly sad, simultaneously. Few could pull of something like that, and Clarke did it.

Clarke said this was his favorite of his works. I can see why.

Thalassans Above and Underneath the Water

At the end of the 20th century it is discovered by studying the sun’s neutrino emissions that the Sun will become a nova around the year 3620. A global effort to save some of humanity is undertaken at the same time as a regiment of birth control is instituted so that as few people as possible would have to experience the last days of planet Earth. Space ships carrying embryos and DNA are sent out to nearby solar systems in the galaxy to seed hospitable planets with human life. The parents of the first generation of humans on other planets were robots. Thalassa is one of those worlds and this story takes place almost entirely on Thalassa in the year 3800AD.

One day a space ship Magellan arrives from Earth carrying 100,000’s of cryptogenically frozen humans. Magellan left right before the end of the world. Magellan was able to make the journey of 70+ light years in about 500 years using the so called Quantum Drive. However, at such speeds (15-20% of the speed of light) a collision with even an atom can be devastating, so Magellan carries a huge ice shield in front of it to clean up the space ahead of it. Magellan continuing further, stopped on Thalassa to replenish the ice shield and that is how the Thalassans and the crew on Magellan (the ones who are awake) get to meet. There is also an intelligent race, the Scorps, living in the oceans of Thalassa. The story of the book is centered on the interaction between the Thalassans, the Magellan crew, as well as the Scorps.

One thing I like about almost all of Artur C. Clarke’s stories is that they are scientifically plausible. There are typically no violations of the laws of nature, no time travel back in time, no travel faster than the speed of light, human civilization does not become a super advanced civilization in a few years, and he understands science concepts. This way it becomes easier for me to imagine the story as being real sometime in the future. This is true for this story as well. Well, I should say that in this novel Arthur C Clarke comes up with his own explanation for the Solar Neutrino Problem that was discovered in the 1960’s. Arthur C Clarke’s interpretation in this book was that the sun was about to die. We now know that the explanation is that a large amount of the neutrinos change to two different forms of neutrinos and therefore went undetected. So we are safe (with respect to this issue).

In his older novels Arthur C. Clarke often does not put enough effort into character development and dialogue. I feel that he did a better job in this novel. He spends time developing the characters and creating believable social interactions. He described the social interaction between the people of the old Earth culture and the separately created Thallassan culture pretty well, and the same can be said in regards to the discovery of the pre-existing underwater culture of the Scorps. I should say that I like Arthur C Clarke’s typical musings on technology, science, and mysteries but adding interesting dialogues and human aspects does not hurt.

Some aspects of this novel that I did not like as much were that it was an unusually slow paced novel with a somewhat predictable and bland ending. Well I read the short story version first so I guess that does not help. However, I felt that the sense of mystery and awe that dominated in novels like “Rendezvous with Rama”, 2001, and 2010, and “Childhood’s End”, was mostly lacking. I still recommend this science fiction novel, especially to Arthur C. Clarke fans.

Seeding Missions Sent To Earth-Like Planets

Earth scientists are given a 1000 year advance warning that our sun will explode and the solar system will be destroyed. In response, re-seed missions are sent to numerous uninhabited earth-like planets in nearby galaxies (when interstellar space travel becomes possible). The goal of these missions is to “seed” these planets with human life and much of earth’s organics.

This is a pretty good story about one of the earlier re-seed colonies (which successfully created a culture reminiscent of 18th century Hawaii….. albeit technically advanced). This 500 year old utopia is visited by the final earth re-seed mission which is still on its way to another destination.

Story’s background is well developed and the relationships depicted between the two re-seed cultures are very believable. Good read. Would make a good sci-fi tv series.

this book makes for a good tutorial for the "somewhat experienced beginner" looking to make ...

SUMMARY:
In short, this book makes for a good tutorial for the "somewhat experienced beginner" looking to make exactly the same type of game that Mudslide Cowboy is. I would not recommend it for an absolute beginner or for someone who has already built a few of their own games. I would recommend it for the casual Stencyler who has done the crash course tutorials and read Innes Borkwood's Learning Stencyl 3.X Game Development: Beginner's guide.

If you are just getting your feet wet with Stencyl and game design, and are looking to make a clone of Mudslide Cowboy and don't care much about how it works, just that it does work, then this book is perfect for you. If you are looking for a deeper understanding of game design principles, game logic, and programming technicalities then I suggest you move on. This book is very much like the books you see in arts and crafts stores. You know the ones like, "How to Draw Dragons" or, "How to Draw Manga". These books give you what you want on the surface level but do not explain in detail figure drawing, anatomy, color theory, etc. Read below for why.

CONS:
The author bills the book as having a "no-nonsense style, enabling you to get to grips with Stencyl in a fun, yet fast paced way" and it is. The author structures the book so that you get to setting up and creating the game relatively quickly but at the cost of explaining much of it. You will find irregular explanations of options and code structure. The rest of it is glossed over and you will just be snapping code together, forgetting about it, and then coming back to it at a later point to finish it. You won't know why it was set up that way and you will most likely not understand how it is working together (if you are a beginner). You are expected to just follow along to meet the book's goal of having you create a game quickly with no nonsense. This is typically what you find of many tutorials out there in the infinite universe of the Internet. It shows you how to build something (very well) but doesn't explain it for a deeper understanding.

There are times in the book when the author assumes you know your way around Stencyl and forgets to tell you little things like click the ok button. A beginner will be utterly confused when the pop up menu being discussed in the book is not on the screen. In one part, it tells you specifically not to click anything. It does a nice little explanation of things and then it goes onto the next part of the process that cannot be seen unless you specifically click that button you were told not to. Once again, someone who is familiar with the program will know to click that button to go onto the next section. A person with no experience will be lost, at least for a little while, until they get brave enough to click that button.

Values for the game are easy to mess up. If you are not careful to read every line you will mistake the necessary values due to screen shots. The screen shot may have one value but in the text there are instructions to change it to another value. You have to be extra careful.

Infrequent testing. The game doesn't call for playtesting very much. You can easily find yourself at the end of a few chapters testing the game and discovering that it does not work. Too bad you made ten or fifteen modifications to the game during those chapters. Looks like you will have to back over each step to see what you missed. This shouldn't happen. Testing should happen more than the reader would want in order to keep the game moving forward and to keep the reader smoothly engaged.

At certain points, you can tell the author is tired of writing this book. His instructions become this: Set up the code to look like what is in the screen shot. While I am a fan of this style, it is not a good option for beginners. They too easily look over the tiny little details, drop down menus, and similarly-named code blocks. At one point in Chapter 10, he mentions that the next chapter is the end of the book and Monetization and Publishing will be discussed. Then comes Chapter 11: Scoring and Game Rules. This really is a minor detail but it goes to show you the author was a bit tired by the end of the book. But that last part is probably the editors fault.

PROS:
Now that I have done a lot of complaining, I want to come out and say that I don't dislike this book. It just had some flaws that anyone looking to buy it should know about. The following is short but very powerful. Don't judge it by the length but by the context of it.

I can't thank the author enough for his no nonsense way of writing. I applaud him for that. Too many books and tutorials spend their time going off the rails wasting time. I was able to get through this book in a couple of days on and off. If I committed myself to it, I could have probably finished reading it in an afternoon or so.

When you do actually get explanations, they are concise, informative, and helpful. The author also provides good tidbits of information that will help trouble shoot during playtesting. For example: Being aware of placing blank tiles from the tileset in the level editor. This can cause a lot of time lost if you don’t know to look for it.

The final chapter on Monetization and Publishing provides an excellent overview and starting point for anyone looking to take that next step. It talks about Android, IOS, different types of certificates, Ad extensions, Interstitial ads, Banner ads, etc. Very well done here.

The code is set up intelligently. I am not a programmer by profession but I have programmed a few complex games and was delighted to learn a few things. Everyone programs differently and there is no right or wrong. Just better or worse. The author does a good, clean job of setting up the code in an understandable way that is easy to construct for beginners and gives more experienced individuals another option.

NOTE:
There are issues with Stencyl that will make the author seem like a liar. He isn’t a liar. He just cannot account for the myriad of tiny little things that can cause the reader to get stuck. For example, in Chapter 3 when you import the tileset it may not display properly in the editor. There is no mention of this in the book. You will have to simply adjust a single value to fix it. A person completely new to this would most likely be derailed and blame the author. Once again, it is not the author's fault. It is just the nature of the program.

Great intro to Stencyl and game programming in general.

Great book for anyone interested in beginning game development or even an experienced game developer looking to get to grasps with the Stencyl engine. Stencyl's a wonderful engine for making 2D games and this book is a fantastic resource for learning the ins and outs of the software. By the end of this book you will be savvy in using Stencyl and the logic of game programming in general. For me, it was the perfect first step to coding. I got to learn and understand how game programming works and now the thought of learning the likes of C# and C++ seems less daunting! Definitely recommended.

Great book - well written, accessable. Divided into two sections - the first is an introuctiuon to the broader concerns of approach german baroque music - lutheran-musical ideologies, ideas of rhetoric in msuic etc. the second is both a compendium of musical-rhetorical terminology, and a selection of shorter extracts concerning individual baroque theorists and their ideas of rhetoric in music. superb book: essential for reference and for and introduiction to the msuic of the period's extrinsic concerns.

The Girls Guide is also a Good Middle Age Guide

I'm not finished with this book but I'm loving it. I'm not even embarrassed to say I'm past the "girl age". I am 47yo and feeling like I never received the manual on "how to get along better in life". I have other books like this but they are very dry, too PhD point of view. This book is a breath of fresh air, I'm drinking it like Pellegrino on a warm Spring day. I'm just appreciating this book, the way it's written - in layman terms, with a sense of humor but also with hardcore knowledge and wisdom behind it. A real persons guide to helping navigate real daily problems.

Great read!

So far so good. I'm only 30 pages in and I'm already swearing by this! Some things are obviously common sense that women in their 20's should already be aware of. A little redundant when it comes to working out but then again I'm not really a fan of working out to begin with :P I can't put this book down

Girl's Guide

So, I'm the kind of person that didn't pay attention to certain things growing up. I'm good at outdoorsy stuff but girl stuff seems so difficult. There's things that I've wondered and had no trustworthy way of answering (no thank you google) and maybe they're too embarrassing to ask... but this book was helpful.There were some things I really wanted to know about (money, buying, renting, etc) and some that were TMI in the best possible way (some 'doctor appointments' I'm too scared to schedule because I have no idea what to expect...) I would suggest this to young women 18 to mid twenties who are a little clueless. It helps.

Foolish Foibles of the Folks from Chelm

These 8 little tales--reflecting life in a Jewish village in Poland--are lighthearted spoofs on simpletons, as well as the respected Elders of Chelm. They even include a fable about an unlikely pair of friends--a cricket and an imp. We witness both harmless pranks and dishonest cheats; delusions and dreams factor in as well. The witch Cunegonde wages war on a wise rabbi (the eternal struggle between Good and Evil), and we witness the trials of a poor girl with no dowry or beau. Married life is satirized, while the value of hard work (or at least honest labor) is praised. Stinginess and Laziness are ridiculed. Typical peasant fare--which applies to humanity in general.

The word "Shlemiel" means a simpleton, a naïve fellow in Yiddish. But sometimes even a fool can outwit another fool and once in a while a fool may actually stumble into a good deal. Cute fluff for readers 12 and up.

A hint of the real I.B.Singer

I have read a great deal of the work of I.B. Singer. He is one of my favorite writers and I believe one of the greatest story-writers of all time. I did not however find in this small book the same kind of emotional depth and intensity that I have found in his great stories such as 'The Little Shoemakers' or 'Gimpel the Fool'or 'Short Friday' or 'Spinoza of Market Street'. In fact only the title- story had the kind of remarkable humor and irony that characterize Singer's writing. The tale of Schlemiel's journey to Warsaw his mistakenly returning home while believing he has arrived at a new town, the whole set of complications created by his believing there is a Chelm Two and a wife and family identical makes for a story rich in implications and suggested meanings. The solution the elders of Chelm provide to this story and the happy way it turns out remind me of Singer at his best.

Poverty grew rich

"In our time, when literature is losing its address and the telling of stories is becoming a forgotten art, children are the best readers," Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote in the three paragraph preface to this 1968 volume. No question, children make fine listeners as well, particularly to these eight stories, which include several Singer originals, as well as some he heard from his mother, who heard them from her mother and grandmother.

Whatever their etymology, the stories all exhibit the themes that run throughout Singer's body of work--spirit, life and the supernatural--all encased in an amazingly agile use of language and humor that glints at the edges.

The book opens with the tale of "Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Miser." The former had a wife Shaindel and seven children and never earned enough to feed them. He had such poor luck working at trades that he decided if he should make candles, the sun would never set. During an especially cold winter, Shaindel told Todie that if he could not get something to eat, she would go to the Rabbi and get a divorce. "And what will you do with it," he asked her. "Eat it?"

Lyzer, meanwhile, was so stingy that he let his wife bake bread only once every four weeks because stale bread was eaten more slowly than fresh. Rather than feed his goats, he let them feast on the thatched roofs of his neighbors. He preferred to eat his dry bread and borscht on a box so that his upholstered chairs would not wear out. He was not a man to make a loan, preferring to keep his money in his strongbox.

But one day Todie asked to Lyzer to borrow a silver spoon, giving his holy word that he would return it the next day. Not one to doubt holy words, Lyzer loaned the spoon and was pleased the next day when Todie returned it, plus a silver teaspoon, explaining that the spoon had given birth. As Todie was honest, he had to return both. He repeated the exercise twice more.

At last, he came to Lyzer to borrow some silver candlesticks for Shabbat. Lyzer gladly loaned them. Todie sold the candlesticks, bought his wife and seven children a feast and on Sunday, returned to Lyzer to say that his candlesticks had died. "You fool! How can candlesticks die," Lyzer screamed, dragging Todie to the Rabbi. "Did you expect candlesticks to give birth?" the Rabbi asked. "If you accept nonsense that brings you profit, you must also accept nonsense when it brings you loss."

Others stories are less silly. We meet Peziza the imp and her friend Tsirtsur the cricket, who lived together in an old stove and shared stories gay, devilish, frightening, and delightful for telling on long winter nights.

And Rabbi Leib, who managed to escape the evil works of Cunegunde, a witch whose son Bolvan robbed the merchants on the roads and hoarded his stolen goods in a cave rendered invisible by his mother's evil magic.

Still others are sillier. These, not surprisingly, hail from that province of silliness, Chelm. In Singer's Chelm, like all renditions of the town, lived fools. Here, even their monikers are funny--names like Gronam Ox, Dopey Lekisch, Zeinvel Ninny, Shmendrick Numskull and Feyvel Thickwit.

Now Shlemiel of the title also lived in Chelm, and was a businessman, such as it were. He married Mrs. Shlemiel, whose father gave him a dowry, with which he bought a goat in Lublin. But on the way home, he left the goat tethered to a tree while he went into an inn for some brandy, chopped liver and onions and a plate of chicken soup and noodles. The innkeeper (not surprisingly) switched his old blind billy goat for Shlemiel's milking goat. Lots more fun and some Chelmnick wisdom followed.

Each good tale wags another. Poverty grew larger, and naturally her feet grew larger too. Menash had a dream, and yes, Shlemiel finally went to Warsaw. To discover the sense in this nonsense, get this book, and share it with your children, be they young or old.

One of the few good mcq books for the FRCR

Getting ready to do the |FRCR Part II. Looking for MCQ books. There are many on the bookshelves. Some are very difficult and some too easy. Some are old and do not cover the latest advancements. This book is quite new and is based on Grainger and Allison's radiology textbook which in itself is almost a gold standard for radiologists. If you read the mcq book you really get the extract of most of the relevant information in the 3 volume Grainger and Allison's book. Buy it before it goes out of stock. A must before the exams.
