To what appeared to be a joyful life. Not that the book is disappointing, but it delivers disappointment,when you realize how truly unhappy he was. Sad story, an even sadder life...

I find this book unputdownable, even though it fills me at times with despair, disgust and irritation. Kenneth Williams was a British actor and comedian of the 50s, 60s and 70s with an acute intelligence and a unique gift for comedy. He was gay, and for many years of his working life homosexuality was illegal. His comic persona used the "camp" stereotype and private language in a way that was far funnier than others in the same (small) field, or anyone since (Julian Clary, Graham Norton). He was widely read, inventive and gifted at ad libbing and eventually earned a living on chat shows and panel games. He had many friends in the theatre who obviously enjoyed his company. He was an excellent writer, one of the things that makes this diary worth reading. His writing is often as funny and perceptive as you'd expect from his public persona, revealing the surreal in the ordinary. But the diary also reveals a man with a dark side, someone who never found a way of living that made him happy. You long to say "Kenneth! Get some therapy!" His self analysis too often turns into navel gazing. He was tortured by guilt over his sexual feelings, constantly making contradictory statements and apparently trying to persuade himself he was above all that. He could also behave appallingly to people -- all faithfully recorded. He clearly came home and wrote the diary, justifying what he'd done. He certainly brooded over wrongs, but he often records apologising and making up. He has flashes of self-insight - that he really only feels at home among people outside his theatrical set. He really was extremely talented - and bigheaded with it. He must have been a nightmare to have in a cast, constantly thinking he knew better and trying to take over. Particularly in the early entries, he sometimes waffles on pretentiously, using long words you feel he doesn't quite understand, and giving an imitation of someone being profound. Then he'll follow the pomposity with a hilarious bit of observation written in a direct and slangy way. As a warts and all portrait, this is unequalled. And incidentally gives a fascinating insight into the stage/screen/radio/TV of the period. Sadly, he took his own life.

Short, Sweet and to the Point

For such a short book, this title certainly packs a wallop. In the Nam, you find out where "Rafterman" got his name from as well a few other little details the movie didn't let you in on. The writing is very high school like and juvenile but well worth the read if you're looking for something quick to pass the time. Highly recommend this title.

Flawless novel of the Vietnam War

This must be the best Vietnam War novel I've read. It's a perfect piece of literature. The writing is incredible. Poetic, sharp, and to the point. I've read great things about Stephen Wright's "Meditations in Green" and O'Brien's "Going After Cacciato." I've read both of those books. They're excellent, but neither of them hold a candle to Gustav Hasford's The Short-Timers. The irony being, of course, that this novel is little-known, and not even in print.
Written from the point of view of combat journalist Corporal Joker, the book reads as if it's narrated by one of the Marines Michael Herr followed around in "Dispatches." That same dark sense of humor is in place, that same tone of voice that one moment is expounding on something profound, the next joking about something mundane. Hasford was a vet, he was a Marine in the middle of it all, and his words drip with realism. But there is a surreal aspect to the book as well, as is expected from any Vietnam novel worth its salt. The fate of Rafter Man, as well as the delusional sequence in which Joker believes he's been killed, are macabre bits of surrealism that leave a lasting impression.
The book is spilt into three connected novellas. The first two, "Spirit of the Bayonet" and "Body Count," were adapted by Stanley Kubrick for his film "Full Metal Jacket." However, the final novella in the book, "Grunts," which details Joker's experiences in the besieged Khe Sahn base, rivals the Do Lung Bridge sequence in "Apocalypse Now," and it's a shame Kubrick didn't include this section in his movie.
To increase the impact of the prose, Hasford writes in present-tense. His sentences are lean and mean, making the book a quick read (it's also very short). All of this just makes me scratch my head. Hasford was obviously a talented writer. The novel reminds me of Golding's "Lord of the Flies," not due to content, but due to the quality of writing, a perfect mixture of modicum and depth. So why did Hasford die in obscurity? There's just no justice.
The only recent author I could compare to Hasford would be Thom Jones, who includes several excellent Vietnam short stories in his three collections (i.e., "The Pugilist at Rest," etc). Jones, though, mostly writes character pieces; with Hasford, you not only get that, but also extremely realistic and bloody action sequences. Simply put, he's a great, forgotten author, and his books need to be put back into print, as soon as possible.

About the Author
Since 2010 Victor Kuligin has been academic dean and lecturer at Bible Institute of South Africa. Prior to this he performed the same duties at Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary. He is also a lecturer in an Open Distance Learning center for Northwest University, Potchefstroom, and a Supervisor for South Africa Theological Seminary, Johannesburg, both in South Africa. He holds his doctorate in systematic theology and master s degree in church history from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. His master s degree in biblical studies is from Wheaton College Graduate School.

An Accessible Treatise on Salvation

Sometimes big theological words can be intimidating. In this book, however, the author presents an accessible -- yet thorough -- view of what it means for a Christian to be saved, looking at thirteen aspects that are found in the Scriptures: Regeneration, Justification, Adoption, Redemption, Citizenship, Atonement, Reconciliation, Illumination, Sanctification, Fruitfulness, Transformation, Participation, and Salvation. Each of these aspects is framed in a specific sphere of life. For example, Regeneration is the Language of Biology, Adoption is the Language of Family, Fruitfulness is the Language of Agriculture, and so on. These various aspects of salvation are not contrived, but rather are completely biblical, with the author giving biblical support for every one of them. In addition, he enriches his explanations with personal experiences from the mission field, which added practical insight and made me want to keep reading. This book is good for personal reading and study, but can also be easily used for group study, as each chapter ends with a few questions to stimulate group discussion. Whatever your purpose for using this book, I can confidently say that you will not be disappointed!

The book by Victor Kuligin outlines the transformational work that results from a relationship with Jesus that affects every area of life. Christ's work in salvation must transform us in our relationships, in our culture, in our finances, in our world view. The book details the provisions that we have been given through Christ and it provides insight into what we have been saved from and the hope that we have been given.

We as Christians certainly don't fully understand Christ's work in salvation. While we need to strive to know about this transformational gift we can only know in part now and will fully know later. Paul said that he prays for us to understand the depths of Christ's riches, grace and mercy that God has extended towards us.

Particularly keen insights are provided by Kuligin regarding redemption and man's participation. What are we really capable of bringing into this transformational work of Jesus? It ultimately answers the question of who man is in relationship to Jesus.

The book has great discussion questions at the end of each chapter to allow a good self-assessment of our own thoughts and feelings. The questions help analyze where we are in terms of spiritual understanding.

Kuligin also brings real life stories and historical perspectives into the book. I got a better perspective into the past church struggles and concepts that were debated in Christendom.

I recommend the book not just for new believers, but also for all Christians. The gift of redemption and salvation is the foundation upon which we build our lives. It is vital to our faith that we understand how wide, deep and solid that foundation is.

About the Author

For 30 years, Don Reinertsen has been a thought leader in the field of product development. In 1983, while a consultant at McKinsey & Co., he wrote the landmark article in Electronic Business magazine that first quantified the financial value of development speed. In 1985, he coined the term Fuzzy Front End to describe the earliest stage of product development. In 1991, he wrote the first article showing how queueing theory could be practically applied to product development.

His 1991 book, Developing Products in Half the Time, coauthored with Preston Smith, is a product development classic. His 1997 book, Managing the Design Factory, was the first book to describe how the principles of Just-in-Time manufacturing could be applied to product development. In the 12 years since this book appeared, this approach has become known as lean product development. For 15 years, Don taught executive courses on product development at California Institute of Technology. He currently teaches public seminars throughout the world.

I won't repeat what others have said except that this new standard on lean product and software development challenges orthodox thinking on every side and is required reading. It's fairly technical and not an easy read but well worth the effort.

For the traditionalist, add to cart if you want to learn:

- Why prioritizing work "on the basis of project profitability measures like return on investment (ROI)" is a mistake
- Why we should manage queues instead of timelines
- Why "trying to estimate the amount of work in queue" is a waste of time
- Why our focus on efficiency, capacity utilization, and preventing and correcting deviations from the plan "are fundamentally wrong"
- Why "systematic top-down design of the entire system" is risky
- Why bottom-up estimating is flawed
- Why reducing defects may be costing us money
- Why we should "watch the work product, not the worker"

If you've ever wondered why agile or lean development techniques work, The Principles of Product Development Flow: Second Generation Lean Product Development by Donald G. Reinertsen is the book for you. It's quite simply the most advanced product development book you can buy.

For those who hunger for a rigorous approach to managing product development, Donald Reinertsen's book is epic. Myths are busted on practically every page, even myths that are associated with lean/agile. For example, take the lean dictum of working in small batches. I push this technique quite often, because traditional product development tends to work in batches that are much too large. Yet it's not correct to say that batch sizes should be as small as possible. Reinertsen explains how to calculate the optimal batch size from an economic point of view, math and all. It's wonderful to have an author take these sorts of questions seriously, instead of issuing yet another polemic.

The book is structured as a series of principles, logically laid out and briefly discussed - 175 in all. It moves at a rapid clip, each argument backed up with the relevant math and equations: marginal profit, Little's law, Markov processes, probability theory, you name it. This is not for the faint of heart.

The use of economic theory to justify decisions is a recurring theme of the book. Its goal is to help us recognize that every artifact of our product development process is really just a proxy variable. Everything: schedules, efficiency, throughput, even quality. In order to trade them off against each other, we have to convert their impact into economic terms. They are all proxies for our real goal, maximizing an economic variable like profit or revenue. Therefore, in order to maximize the true productivity (aka profitability) of our development efforts, we need to understand the relationships between these proxy variables.

I read a lot of books. This is the most important one I've read in 10 years.

Reinertsen synthesizes several tough subject areas: queuing, ToC, Lean, and Real Options. There's rigor here, but it's incredibly accessible and presented in a set of concise principles.

I've bought copies to hand out, and I'm promoting this as a way to put business, technology, and marketing all on the same page. If we can all talk about the cost of delay, then all kinds of emotion-based debate just evaporates.

This book is just awesome.

Our dog Floyd got attacked in our hallway by my neighbors dogs 6 months ago and started to react to them. This behavior increased towards all the dogs of our building and some strangers inside the building. Our dog is 18 month now and is a wonderful love bug of 105 lbs. So any type of aggressive behavior was not acceptable especially because they were not manageable.
I saw 2 trainers previously to read this book. The first one told me to find a way to change Floyd's attention when the trigger as coming by but he was so stressed that it was not working. The second one, told us to keep him on a routine (he was already on a routine and we took training classes with him), and nothing could be done because he was traumatized. The muzzle was the only alternative if the routine was not working.
I found click to calm and red it in 3 days. I had all my answers. Emma is describing simply what to do and how to do it. It is easy to follow and to understand. I contacted Emma Parsons personally for her to recommend a trainer in my area (chicago) who could help me with the clicker training. She kindly reply and wrote to a trainer in my area. We started the program in August with Laura Monaco Torrelli. Floyd improved so much. We had to put him on anti anxiety medicines for him to be more relaxed and to me more responsive to the training but I highly recommend this type of training. Our road will be long but in 2 months the results are phenomenals. He is not aggressive towards all the dogs anymore and he is getting better with the neighbors dogs. My advise is - This is an awesome base to start training your dog, and if you are like us and need some help, look for a trainer in your area who should be able to guide you and recommend the best way to help your dog. It is not as well a magic pill, you need to put dedication into it and work everyday with your dog, but at the end it pays off.

My dog suddenly developed aggression issues just like the dog in this book--no trauma, just one day she was fine, and the next day she was not. For almost a year I've tried to figure out how to "fix" her. This book has been the most helpful thing so far! It probably won't help if you have a dog that is very dominant and generally aggressive, or if it's aggressive toward humans. But if your dog is aggressive toward other dogs out of fear, this is a terrific book. I've only used the suggestions in the first 20 or so pages, but already I am seeing improvement. The clicker is really key here... So is totally eliminating punishment and focusing on GOOD behavior. I also went back to using a Gentle Leader on my dog instead of a prong collar--getting the tension off of the neck area seems to help a lot. My dog actually becomes fearful of places where she has experienced fear in the past, so we start some positive "Look!" and "Touch" exercises before we get to those places. It helps to distract her as well as to get rid of bad memories. All of this is so helpful! And it was so eye-opening to think of fear aggression as just an unwanted behavior. Highly recommend!

Great introduction with a perfect learning curve

This is a well thought out guide to acquiring experience and comfort in creating games with Unity 5. The author isn't just another guy with expertise, he is an excellent teacher who knows what to share to help you gain skills (and remember them!) at the right times and in the right order. I was spurred into writing this review when, for the 4th time in as many chapters, he wrote what I was thinking and was spot on. When a tech book seems like it's reading your mind it is a very good experience. So far I've been extremely happy with the results.

There's nothing here that isn't also in tutorials online, but I've read (and watched videos of) a bunch of those and found them wanting. None of those resources have been as grounded in the basics nor have they offered a smoother learning curve than this book. It's a great intro and I feel better equipped to learn more on my own.

Great Introduction to Unity and to the Process of Computer Game Development

This is an excellent resource for someone who wants to learn how to build and distribute computer games. It walks through the entire process, end-to-end, using real-world examples. While it will not turn a programmer into an artist, level designer, or animator, it will show the programmer how to interact with those people, to consume the assets they produce, and to incorporate those assets into the game.

When I first began using computers in the 1980s, I was fascinated with computer graphics. Not being very artistic, though, I was never able to do much more than simple images and line drawings. Additionally, despite the fact that I have been programming computers for over 20 years, the process of creating computer games seemed extremely complicated because of the need to handle partical physics, collision detection, lighting and shadows, and a whole host of other concerns that do not involve code. I recently became aware of Unity, an environment for creating both 2D and 3D computer games, and I was anxious to learn more about how to use it.

This book assumes the reader knows almost nothing about how to build computer games and only slightly more about programming. The author provides excellent examples, starting in the very first chapter, for how to use the Unity editor (including the use of MonoDevelop for developing scripts to control various game objects). While the example in Chapter 1 is a traditional "Hello, World" application, Chapter 2 walks the reader through the process of building a complete 3D world akin to first-person shooter games like Doom and including collision detection to prevent the player from walking through walls. Later chapters introduce 2D graphics, heads-up displays, sound effects and music, and the use of Internet-based resources and web-service APIs. These are not trivial examples; they are complete tutorials that show step-by-step how to use the Unity editor and write the code to do something interesting and realistic. While necessarily simplistic, they cover nearly the full range of processes (including the step to build the game to deploy to a variety of platforms) a game developer would go through to build a computer game.

The code in the examples is well-structured, and the author emphasizes the need to keep things modular in order for the project to be maintainable as it grows in size and complexity. The author also acknowledges the areas where he is simply touching on a subject, and he provides a number of external resources where the reader can go for more information. The book is very well written and the examples are complete while also being digestible. The author is not only knowledgeable about this topic but also able to communicate his knowledge clearly to his readers.

Best book I've read involving game programming

I've never read a book involving programming that was so easy to follow, so this was a great change of pace. The book goes through many of the basics of game programming in unity, and eventually delves into more complex topics like netcoding and using event listeners to communicate occurrences in the game itself. I got it originally in pdf format, and acquired the book after. Having both was quite useful to be able to quickly search things and reference the book without opening more windows. Overall, a quality book that really explains everything in detail for a beginner to follow.

Don't Let The "Fun" Aspect Fool You

I literally just finished reading (and flagging and highlighting) this book and am blown away by how much I learned in just 160 pages. For reference, I'm 20-years-old and a self studier, and have been studying Korean through books and Internet resources for a month and half. For some reason the title "Korean For Beginners: Mastering Conversational Korean" had me picturing page after page of the same old generic introductions you're basically encouraged to memorize, and that initially turned me off of it. I was really lusting after "Elementary Korean", as I thought I was looking for something really intense, comprehensive, and boring...I was essentially looking for a textbook and misguidedly passed on "Korean For Beginners" assuming it was just fluff. I mean, it really sounds too good to be true in the description (you'll learn a lot AND have fun?!).

Turns out I ended up having to buy "Korean For Beginners" because I couldn't afford "Elementary Korean". And I've never been so happy to be broke. The first chapter is pretty light, as it briefly goes over the basics of Korean history and culture; at this point you'll still have no idea what you're in for. Pretty much immediately after that I realized this was the absolute best book I could've chosen. The chapters are comprehensive in terms of information yet short and lighthearted (HOW did they do that?), and they really do cover everything you need to know if you're serious about learning this language (i.e. sentence structure, particles, conjugation, negations, tenses, nuances of the language, etc.). In the first few chapters alone I received a massive amount of clarification on things I had previously learned elsewhere. Not to mention the organization is fantastic. Whatever is introduced at any point is revisited *at least* once in later chapters, so it offers the chance to review yet it doesn't feel like you're drowning in information. I also noticed that whenever I was confused or had a question about something, nine times out of ten it would be answered in the next paragraph with a line like, "I bet you're wondering _______". It was like this thing was reading my mind, and I found myself audibly laughing every time it happened, in disbelief. At one point I literally kissed this book. Just saying.

Besides being an awesome introduction to the language (and let me reiterate - not just the language in general but actually LEARNING the language), the tone of the book is just fun. I didn't think I needed a ~cool, hip~ "guide" as they were offering, but I realized after diving into it that I did. It's odd, but the casual and lighthearted nature of the narration really does help you relax while doing something that can be as frustrating and disheartening as learning a new language. I'm passionate about Korean and love it to death, but of course there are times when I feel like I'm not learning fast enough or that I pretty much suck at everything and should just give up on life. The narrator truly does "bring the language to life" and keeps your studies from feeling like a chore. And even when you're feeling a bit stuck, it keeps you from taking things too seriously and encourages you to keep learning. The cold nature of textbooks and the like can sometimes make it seem as if they're mocking you (I'm not the only one who thinks this, right?). While reading "Korean For Beginners", you never feel like you're under pressure, which in turn actually accelerates your learning due to the absence of self-doubt. I breezed through it because of this and honestly didn't want it to end! And again, it wasn't for nothing, as I know for a fact this book alone will be a huge factor in my becoming proficient in Korean.

If you're serious about learning the language, I also suggest Kyubyong Park's other book "500 Basic Korean Verbs". In fact, these two make a super effective pair and I highly recommend that you buy them together. I believe "Korean For Beginners" was the perfect way to ease myself into the language and has prepared me for more straightforward books like "500 Basic Korean Verbs" and, eventually, "Elementary Korean".

I'm about to start it from the beginning and soak everything up a second time (and a third, fourth, fifth, etc.). Seriously guys, don't write this book off because it seems too "fun". It's definitely fun, but it's also an invaluable learning resource every aspiring Korean speaker should have in their stack.

Most Engaging Korean Curriculum

Of all the language curricula I've encountered, this particular book is one of the few that hits the critical points for being truly engaging.

Firstly, it is authentic. There is little use of Roman characters. It teaches Korean in both spoken and written forms, not leaving one handicapped without necessary reading ability. (Avoid Chinese, Japanese, and Korean books that push ease of learning over the importance of literacy.)

Secondly, this book is thorough. It incorporates explanations for many pronunciation and grammar rules, filling voids of relating to the language's mechanics for the English speaker where possible. (Likely every language has inexplicable exceptions of course.) The author details solidly the Korean language's foundations needed to progress by carefully considering grammar and pronunciation from multiple angles and situations. Included are vocabulary lists by topic weaved into the bends and turns of each chapter too.

Thirdly, in a unique way, this book manages to be quite engaging purely as an enjoyable read while simultaneously avoiding the textbook-dry approach. There are culture tips, many jokes, and clever additions that will make you laugh. The author's style is decidedly friendly and down-to-earth, admitting that language acquisition is tough and a little humor to lighten the load only helps. Somehow he balances this without becoming flamboyant, distracting, or losing the book's focus.

Overall, had I to start learning Korean over again from the start, this would be my first resource. It's an excellent introduction to the language, and I only hope there will be more to come from these authors! Deserving of 5 stars.

It's just okay.

Maybe I should not be writing a review yet since I have not actually finished the book. But I have been working my way through this book for the majority of this month and I have made it half way through chapter six and I am kind of struggling to continue. I am a total beginner with absolutely no knowledge of the Korean language before starting this and so far this book has not been very helpful. This book contains information that one definitely needs to know but the way it is presented, in my opinion, is for someone who already has some knowledge of the Korean language. Not a total beginner like myself (I am still trying to get the vowels and diphthong sounds memorized, which, without knowing the sounds I obviously can't pronounce words and therefore can't read).
This book is definitely light-hearted. The author makes you feel like he is there with you in your learning journey and not just lecturing you. But with that being said, after I finish a chapter, I feel like my head is going to explode from information overload. The book is pretty fast paced in my opinion so that could have something to do with it. A topic or grammar point or rule of the language will be presented, then a few examples will be given, then we're off to the next topic. Even though it's a book and I can review pages as much as I want, I feel like I am not given enough time (or practice!) to soak everything in.
Speaking of practice, there are no exercises to complete. Some people don't even like exercises and that's okay. This book might be for you then. But for me, I need practice and this book doesn't give it.
Like I said before, this book has great information in it, I just think that this book will be better suited as a reference book; to quickly flip through to a grammar point or rule if you forgot it; or even a supplemental book to lessons one might already be taking or if you have a tutor. It's not a bad book, it's just not for me in this early stage of my Korean learning journey as a self-taught learner.
