great story for my classroom!

I recently read this story for my students. They LOVED it! They joined in whenever the page said "Run, Turkey, Run!". They have asked me to read it again and again. I will make this a keeper for my class and read it every Thanksgiving! It's a simple and fun story.

Kids will enjoy the antics of turkey as he tries to escape farmer.

This is one of those fun stories that have a line that repeats throughout. Little ones love being able to chime in at the appropriate time. I was looking for something my daughter could use with her preschool class of 3-year-olds. I enjoyed this book so much I had to get one for me, too, to read to my grandkids.
It is the day before Thanksgiving and Farmer is in hot pursuit of Turkey, with burlap bag in hand. Turkey tries to blend in with his farmyard friends, and this gets pretty funny, but ultimately Turkey just has to run!
What does Farmer's family end up having for their Thanksgiving dinner? And what happens when they go looking for a Christmas tree after Thanksgiving?
This book will entertain and generate discussion. The illustrations are colorful, fun and full-page. The words are minimal. I recommend this as a book to be read to preschool children, or one that early readers could read with a little help on the few big words.

Techniques on becoming a David who defeats Goliath

Rob Burley has the exterior of Mr. Belvedere and an interior which whirls like the Tasmanian Devil. And, when Big Business decides to throw its massive weight upon this hyper-energetic consumer advocate, he responds with ferocity. He is like the nagging fifi dog who won't let go of the intruder's ankle - he will not quit.

But, I enjoyed his style: Thesis with simple analysis followed by anecdotal true story. Very common in the "How To" industry of nonfiction novels. And, very true here. Makes the reading much easier.

In a nutshell he espouses consumer terrorism. Legitimate methods? Mostly. Ethical? Partly. Justifiable? Yes. And, it is the last answered question which the reader must understand. First, he commences all acts with the "give them the chance to do the right thing" telephone call. You must commence by offering the company a chance to fully understand what has transpired and how to resolve the issue without confrontation . . .

But, this does not always work (Actually Chapter 15 shows what happens when it works - and Big Business and the consumer are both winners). Upon there not being a successful remedy delivered, he then asks that you employ his five "P's" - Chapters 4-8. Then, after understanding the methodology (what I have coined as "consumer terrorism"), he seeks for the consumers to go forward, but to curtail their activity by a simple marginal cost analysis - Chapter 9: basically don't get overwhelmed. "[I]f getting what you deserve is going to cost you more than it's worth, forget about it and move on."

A few hints to the readers. First, Chapters 12 and 13 basically are recaps of the prior chapters, so those wanting to learn the tricks of his trade quickly can do so by reading these two chapters - much more efficiency.

Second, he is not a lawyer. And, on a few occasions he makes references to laws which are not accurately depicted for ALL consumers in ALL states. His statements about liens on homes is precisely the opposite of what happens in Florida. So to Floridians who choose to follow his advice about not being concerned about mechanics' liens, I say - beware. You will have got what you paid for.

Lastly, there are civil actions which are labeled "Civil Extortion." Many of the tactics employed in this book toe the line and could easily be determined "worthy of litigation" by many attorneys employed by "Big Business." Again, take caution.

But, when no one steps over the line and his tactics are not over-the-line, his David-like triumphs over Big Business make the reader both smile and cheer. One for the underdogs is always appreciated by a true spectator.

Power to the Consumer!

Ron Burley takes you on a tour through his trials of being stepped on by large corporations as well as the local tire salesman. Through doing the right thing, and sometimes the wrong thing, Burley learned how to get not what he deserved, but what he paid for. This is an excellent treatise on the sad state of customer service today, and what we can do about it. Highly recommended!

No Need to Unscrew Buying this Book!

I was required to read this book for my college english class (CCCC 1301!), and after picking it up I gained a world of insight into the minds and absolute realities of customer service departments. I feel confident that if I need to change a screwed situation in my life, I can. Ron Burley is a genius. He shares his own life situations in which he used the Unscrewed technique to solve issues he faced based on personal experimentation. He remains courteous throughout explaining the process, as well as "just a little bit Jack" to give him the proper edge for accomplishing his goals.

Specialist but a very good book that a generalist could even enjoy

A rather amazing book that sadly won’t get the attention it thoroughly deserves. This hefty tome provides a timely, informative and authoritative look at the global maritime logistics industry, helping explain its history, considering its present-day challenges and operations and casts an eye forward to its future.

It is clearly aimed at the academic or industry participant and for its target audience it has scored a bulls-eye. Yet for the more interested generalist it still offers a lot, although you can understand they are less likely to stumble across it, if nothing else because of its price. It is a bit of an expensive casual read, but still a great bargain if you have a need for it as you will get your money’s worth.

This is a revised (second) edition, a worthy upgrade if you will, with new chapters on port-centric logistics in concept and practice, hinterland logistics and global supply chains, maritime transport and logistics as a trade facilitator, and future trends and developments. Don’t worry if you feel that you are treading in deep water, as the book’s team of international experts who act as contributing authors manage to find a level, aided in no small part by its editors, or collective voice that can appeal to audiences of all levels and experiences.

This reviewer is no stranger to the world of international logistics and freight shipping, albeit mostly as a passive participant and occasional importer, yet this book managed to throw a lot of “I didn’t know that” or “I had never thought of that”-type reactions in to the reading mix. A lot of the book’s detail went clearly over this reviewer’s head, yet it didn’t feel as if things were being wasted either, and surprisingly rather a lot of things stuck in the mind. Anyone who works actively with logistics could stand to gain a fair bit of background knowledge and actionable industry information from this book. Students and other academics have access to a gold mine.

For example, it is not necessarily a given that an importer should have the exporting party arrange the freight booking. There can be often advantages in the booking, seemingly a trivial detail, being handled by the importer. Three sentences in the book, hidden in plain sight, could easily see the book pay for itself within one purchase if that situation becomes actual: “These surcharges can easily raise the total transport bill by 50 per cent or more, and they make the transport cost for ocean shipping complex and difficult to interpret. The chosen Incoterms determine which party books ocean transport. This can also have an effect on the height of certain charges…” Blink and you miss them at your peril!

Or what about one sentence, drawing on academic research, that suggests even the method of freight handling and its routing can be a bigger deal than you might exist: “… estimate the impact of time delays on trade, and find that each day's delay reduces the probability of trade by 1–1.5 per cent. Time delay really is a trade barrier, and ocean shipping, which causes structural delays, can be seen as the cause of this.”

If I am an exporter, maybe it becomes in my interest to start to look at different ports, for example, as the larger port might not necessarily be the cheapest or the most expedient to handle my freight: delays that annoy my customers might start to have an impact on my bottom line. Maybe I can save my customer money as well by suggesting they book their freight. Little things have a lot of possible impact.

The bottom line: if you are professionally involved with maritime logistics, however tangentially, or need to study this area, buy this book. If you are curious and open to new knowledge within the “non-fiction” genre, try to get this book – even if you have to borrow it from a library. Strangely enough, when this reviewer first saw the book’s title and speed-read the marketing blurb, one was expecting an entirely different book. First impressions can thankfully be deceptive!

Valuable reference for serious Verilog developers

Verilog may appear to be "simple" for beginner because it is a loosely-typed language and its syntax is somewhat to that of C. In reality, Verilog is really a complex language and many intricate details and features are buried in the language standard (i.e., LRM, Language Reference Manual). Sometimes these details are counter-intuitive and cause unexpected behaviors (for example, the expressions "(a+b)>>1" and "(0+a+b)>>1" are likely to return different results). This book systematically lists and discusses these gotchas, provides guidelines to avoid these traps, and helps you to develop reliable and robust Verilog codes. It can save you many, many debugging hours down the road. Though somewhat expensive, this book is a valuable reference for serious Verilog developers. A simplified version of this book appears as a conference paper. You can search the web and take a look and decide whether it fits you need.

At least I'll recognize them

Just started writing SystemVerilog coming from a background of Verilog and C++ but the Verilog was a bit stale. There are a lot of things about SystemVerilog that seem counterintuitive from C++, such as automatic vs. static variables, that everything is essentially pointers, scoping rules, the way inheritance works. As I started reading the gotchas in this book, I realized I had already made several of them. I still make gotchas that I've read about but at least I recognize them.

In exploring this theme, the volume also seeks to consider wider questions about the philosophy of history and literature, including questions of truth, evidence, professionalization, disciplinary strategies, and methodology. At its heart is the idea that literary texts and other artistic representations of history can have historical value, and should therefore be taken seriously by practitioners of history in all its forms.

Dr Porscha Fermanis is a Lecturer in Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Literature at University College Dublin. Her research interests include the relationship between Enlightenment and Romanticism; Romantic-era historiography and historical fiction; and Romantic poetry and poetics. She has published John Keats and the Ideas of the Enlightenment (Edinburgh University Press, 2009), and is currently working on A Concise History of Romanticism (with Carmen Casaliggi, forthcoming 2015) and a monograph entitled Romantic Pasts: Narrative History in Britain and Ireland, 1770-1850.

Dr John Regan is a Research Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge. His current research interests centre on the inter-relatedness of poetry, aesthetics, and historiography in the long eighteenth-century. Dr Regan has published on Scott's prosody, philosophical history and late Enlightenment antiquarianism, and the relations between versification and historiography in Byron.

But when he happened to meet one of the men who had mastered this force they called Aiki, he discovered something beyond his wildest imagination: that logic and reason come up empty-handed when faced with the blunt reality of a controllable force that can totally negate the strength of a large man and then send him flying across the room. Not a martial arts throw or a technique using muscles, but a genuine, experiential POWER that allows a 95 year-old man to toss 30 year-old bodybuilders, judo and karate masters around like beanbags.

The author, Dr. Kimura, is still teaching mathematics. But his life changed completely through daily encounters with this mysterious force and with Sagawa Sensei, the only teacher alive who could command it. Transparent Power is Kimura’s record of both Sagawa’s life and teachings and what little is known about Sagawa’s own teacher, the man who discovered Aiki.

About the Author
Tatsuo Kimura began his study of martial arts with kendo from age 12, reaching the rank of 3rd dan. He practiced Aikido from age 15 to age 30, studying with Morihei Ueshiba Sensei and Seigo Yamaguchi Sensei (9th dan Shihan of Aikikai Hombu Dojo), and received the rank of 5th dan. He studied Kashima Shin-ryu sword under Minoru Inaba Sensei for some years beginning at age 23.

His first visit with Sagawa Sensei was 28 November, 1978, and Sensei finally allowed him to become a student beginning 8 January, 1979. From that time he trained with Sagawa Sensei more than any other student, over 4,000 times. In 1993 Sagawa Sensei awarded him the kyoju dairi license, and in 1994 he completed 10-gen jikiden koshu.

Dr. Kimura is a Professor of Mathematics with numerous published books and papers in that field. He is also the author of Discovering Aiki: My 20 Years With Yukiyoshi Sagawa Sensei.

EXCELLENT BOOK FOR ALL MARTIAL ARTISTS

Excellent book! For me it's like "Training's Thinking Bible".
Through this book we can see the depth of Sagawa Sensei's art, the attitude for real usage of Daitoryu in fighting (both, Sagawa Sohan and Takeda Sensei), the training behind the skill, and the importance of thinking instead of mindless repetition. This book is a treasure.

I'd like to publicly express my thanks to Kimura Tatsuo Sensei and all involved in translation and publication of this book.

I'm a student of Kimura Sensei since 2001. Although the description of Sagawa Sohan's techniques may seem impossible or far-stretched to some people, all I can personally say is that when I met Tatsuo Kimura Sensei and felt his technique of Aiki I was very deeply surprised. It is impossible to actually describe, imagine or even believe after seeing it. The only way is to feel for oneself this unbelievable force that either gently yet very suddenly causes the human body to collapse.

At the time of writing the original Japanese edition (1994-5) some adnvice of Sagawa Sohan was well ahead of time. Only recently sport scientists and psychologists discover such various theories. This is the book which opened my mind in Martial Arts.

I highly recommend "Transparent Power" to any serious martial artist, no matter what style. It may change your entire approach to your own Martial Art and your training and practice.

If you looking for the hidden part of aikido or aikiarts this book will be very useful.

It does not give exercises or anything else.

It explains the context in which the exercises need to be done.

Not for the beginning student, but useful for students with twenty or more years of practice who are looking for

further progression.

"Transparent Power: A Secret Teaching Revealed" is the first complete English translation of the martial arts philosophy Yukiyoshi Sagawa by one of his dedicated students, Tatsuo Kimura, and now made available in this country from MAAT Press. Arguably considered to be the true heir of the body of martial arts traditions known as Aikido, the focus of "Transparent Power" is on the internal personal force and how it is transmitted to the student by the teacher (sensei) as the disciple is taught by the master to develop it and use it as life's circumstances dictate. "Transparent Power" is not a martial arts instruction manual of physical techniques on overpowering opponents, but how the will develops -- information that is as relevant to any human activity well beyond the boundaries of martial arts combat. As informed and informative and it is thoughtful and thought-provoking, "Transparent Power" is very strongly recommended reading for all martial arts students regardless of the particular discipline in which they are training, and a welcome addition to both academic and community library Martial Arts reference collections as well.
