About the Author
Tim Gilles has authored or co-authored several textbooks and has been active in professional associations for many years. He was president and a board member of the California Automotive Teachers (CAT), a board member and election committee chair of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT), a member of the California Community College Chancellor's Trade and Industry Advisory Committee, and education committee chair for the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Independent Automotive Professionals Association. Mr. Gilles has also served several terms as a board member of the Santa Barbara Automotive Service Council and is active in industry associations such as AERA, The Automotive Repair Coalition, and IATN, including delivering presentations at numerous conferences. He was an automotive teacher for 38 years and is professor emeritus in the Automotive Technology Department at Santa Barbara City College. Mr. Gilles holds the industry certifications of ASE Master Automotive Technician and ASE Master Engine Machinst.

This is an overpriced textbook poorly put together with mediocre 2 colors and darkish invisible black and white pictures. I would look for other easier and much more fun to read full color textbook, and at cheaper price.

The book arrived in perfect condition and saved me a bunch of money

I needed this book for my class at Macomb Community College. It was the exact book I needed for class at less than half the price that the school was asking. The book arrived in perfect condition and saved me a bunch of money. Tim Gilles has written basically every book I have needed for this program. I have found this book and most of his other very well put together with accurate information. Next time I need a book for classes I will definitely have to check here first before going to the campus book store. The cover art and numerous diagrams and cut aways are very well illustrated.

Illustrations really help to get the whole picture, going step by step you can see the problems quickly and get to the repair with confidence, you may have to read some parts twice to get the meaning but the pictures then help a lot, overall a great resource for beginners and a good resource in the future, do not sell this book, keep it!.

While the body of Sara Baartman (1789–1815), also known as the Hottentot Venus, has been the subject of intense Western scrutiny (she was regarded as a paradoxical freak of race and sexuality, both alluring and primitive) and exploitation to the point of postmortem dissection, little is known about her life beyond her careers as sideshow exhibit and posthumous icon for a variety of causes, from artifact repatriation to the evils of science. Crais (The Politics of Evil) and Scully (Liberating the Family) chase down obscure references to Baartman's life in South Africa and discover a rich if difficult life: a woman who loved and lost and traveled farther (from Cambedoo and Cape Town to London and Paris) than many of her peers. Her life personifies the shames of colonialism, slavery and gender persecution, but Baartman showed too much independence to be reduced to mere victim or symbol (The more iconic Sara Baartman became, the more she stood for a range of causes, the less complicated her past became). This is an extremely well-written and evocative book based on research in five countries conducted over a number of years by two eminent scholars of African history. It sheds light on not only on one woman's life, but on all sorts of fascinating intellectual questions, including how one should read biography, how to write biography, problems with access to archives, etc. In addition, it also encourages its readers to think very seriously about the big questions -'Enligtenment' questions, if you will - about identity, nations, science, the novel, display and story-telling at its finest. I recommend this book to all intelligent readers. It should reach a very wide audience. READ THIS BOOK FOR YOURSELF!

Exciting Story Provides New and Unique View on A Complicated History

The story of Sara Baartman is at first seen as quite a cut-and-dry story, involving the exploitation and restraint over a southern African woman around the turn of the 19th century, showcased around Europe as a specimen of the "lower" forms of human kind at the tip of Africa, and touted as the possible link between humans and other animals by scientists. Her life has been used in many contexts since her death, and has most recently stood in the limelight, upon her return to South Africa from Parisian museums, as a glaring symbol of the colonial oppression associated with the late 18th and 19th centuries. What Crais and Scully vividly portray, however, is that Sara Baartman's history is anything but a cut-and-dry account. By extensively surveying primary and secondary sources from across the world, Crais and Scully not only explain the life of Sara Baartman, but also take the reader on a side-by-side voyage with Sara as she went from the rural areas of South Africa to the growing colonial outpost of Cape Town, and then all the way to the metropoles of London and Paris. The book drives home the point the interpretive values held within the field of history, as well as the frequent lack of self-power and choice given posthumously to historical figures. By empowering Sara Baartman, and returning her voice to her after centuries of only others speaking on her behalf, Crais and Scully guide the reader through a questioning of otherwise-assumed historical fact and exploration of the different themes underlying a very prominent character in world history.

This book serves as a wonderful insight into the topics of world history, scientific research, and gender studies. The writing style and storyline superbly captures the continued attention and fascination of the reader, and offers a welcomed change to a field typically inundated with dry, solely analytical role. Crais and Scully's book actively energises the life of Sara Baartman and her role in it, and takes the reader on a trip around a world of the not-so-distant past.

Fisics for PHarriers

As an "engineer turned farrier" I find this book to be a valuable reference. However, I'm not sure that someone lacking a background in physics would be able to understand the information. The contents are very technical and you might find your "left brain" working overtime to obsorb the data. IT AIN'T LIGHT READIN' FOR SURE, but Newton and Archimedes would love this book!!!

There is also a "dummed down" version of this book available. For folks who get a headache trying to understand vector mechanics and angular momentum try The Dynamic Horse A Biomechanical Guide to Equine Movement and Performance instead.

Limited Usefulness

This book provides a number of scholarly articles that are both comprehensive and thorough in regards to their subject. However, if you are interested in just learning more about how your horse moves or gait abnormalities and their causes, you are better off getting a book on your breed's conformation or a book on lameness. The information is academic in nature- if you are an academic I'm sure it is a terrific book. However, even for interested, experienced, and capable horse owners, this book has very little useful day to day information.

Thoroughly covered here are sun signs, moon signs, planets, and the significance of the 12 zodiacal houses, as well as the most recent discoveries in astronomy and 21st-century projections. The author gives an easy, logical way to integrate the interpretations of the sun signs, moon signs, planets, and houses in any given chart, something not easily done or often seen in general astrology books. The book's only shortcoming is its lack of instruction on making a detailed technical chart, which is necessary if one is to cast a complete and accurate horoscope. However, Woolfolk compensates for this by teaching a simplified method that is about 90 percent accurate enough to get a beginner started and includes a bibliography for further instruction. If you want to learn how to cast charts and interpret go to a more advanced book

I am a professional Astrologer who has studied astrology for 16 years now. This was my first Astrology book at 15 and it was a very dim general introduction.To advise you before buying: It is very dumbed down for the novice to understand. There are better books to get a better understanding about astrology. The art of chart interpretation is complex and cannot be that simplified. If you want to accurately learn astrology then I suggest authors like Stephen Arroyo,Steven Forrest,Kevin Burke, ,Noel Tyl. I teach basic astrology and I would never recommend this book to my students. In an effort to be fair I will say if you do not want to cast charts and know some slight details on houses ,signs etc then this is a decent introduction but by no means is this a great book for the beginning astrology student. I will say although it was (((my first book)))) It never took me to that next level I was seeking. If I would have relied on it as my only book I would not be a good astrologer today.

Not the only one you'll need, and not the best introduction

The title really is false advertising: You can't even do the kind of astrology that's described in the book with just this book, as you need an ephemeris--a chart that tells you what degree your planets are in--to figure out the aspects between planets, and this is a central part of astrology. You can find an ephemeris--as well as more helpful readings of what planets in signs and houses mean--from Parker's Astrology, a far superior all-in-one astrology book. Much of Woolfolk's book has a cut-and-paste feel. There's a chintziness about the writing that is in keeping with the choice of such a cheesy, mercenary title. I'd like to single out the section on synastry, or chart comparison, which is bad to the point of being harmful. I give this book two stars rather than one because it can give a beginner a general idea of what real astrology is about, and may lead them on to more serious books. So it has some value to the extent that its title is wrong.

Your time is better spent elsewhere

I'm currently enrolled in a Medical Assisting course for which this book was required. Unfortunately, I've noticed several discrepancies. Several of the quiz answers in the back of the book are incorrect, and so far one of the chapters asked a question for which there was no answer available. The question was about prostate inflammation risk factors, while the answer was for prostate cancer risk factors (chapter 17, question 10). Many of the steps in the back of the chapters on performing tests don't even make any sense. Like, they suggest that when performing a dipstick urine test, that you throw away the results before you write them down in a chart, or that you check the control box in a Fecal occult blood test AFTER you've applied solution to the slides and waited 60 seconds.
Diagrams and complimentary images are another thing. Specific examples include the nephron not being fully labeled, the "what would you do?" questions don't have answers to them, sterile drapes shown being opened below the waist, and an image for proper hand washing warns to not wet the front of ones scrubs, yet the woman in the image clearly has wet scrubs. These are only a few of many.
Some of the information in the book is also dated, or straight up incorrect. Page 215, for example, claims that HSV2 causes genital warts. HPV causes genital warts, HSV2 causes blisters. Page 171 goes so far as to suggest that "Rectal temperatures are commonly obtained in young children or patients who are unable or unwilling to cooperate with an oral measurement." What? Chapter 1, page 10, clearly states this is battery.
I would not recommend this for future classes until it's been thoroughly reviewed and revised. It's been lazily thrown together, and no one who manifested this text has an MD, DO, NP, or RN.

Finally a book that's easy to understand.

I picked up this book as a recommendation and was pleased with that fact that its easy to understand. Its no Harry Potter but it really simplifies Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology.

As Neuroscience textbooks go, this one is great

I don't have the most recent edition, but the one I have is VERY helpful. I am in medical school, so this is not a recommendation for joy reading, but compared to the textbook that was required for the course, this one is MUCH better. It is very clear, no nonsense, straight forward presentation of information without a lot of extra wordiness. The pictures are helpful, but not overwhelming. I have a paperback version, and it is small and light, unlike most textbooks(my version is 328 pages, but it appears the new one is only 281 vs. my other one which is 780). Again, overall a great, helpful text.

Manger and Gatz's essentials

While I am not a neurophysiologist, I did use an older edition of this in college, and I like this edition much, much better. It seems that the authors were trying to keep the accuracy, but delete some of the non essential, technical jargon. Neuroanatomy/ neurophysiology is complex, and anyone who attempts to clarify it, and make it easier to understand for those of us who are attempting to learn it should be commended.
I would use this as a good primary text for the allied health fields,as least as a starter text. It is not too expensive for a student to buy and keep.
