Thank you Mr. Hayes for bringing this story to print.

Nearly 20 years ago, I went to my first De La Salle football game, and they won. In fact, they did not lose for several years to come, and even then it was on a controversial play at Oakland Coliseum when running back Rob Forrester ran in a touchdown, but was ruled out of bounds... Reviews showed, he was still in bounds and scored with the football just crossing inside the pylon. However, there was no 'instant replay' and alas, DLS had an incredible win streak come to an end.

I understand they started a new streak... and it was an impressive one in its own right. However, it too found its end.

The Spartans would start yet another streak, this one even longer. I sat in the bleachers when they played La Costa Canyon near San Diego this past year. It was my first Spartan game in nearly 15 years, the last one I witnessed, they lost. They weren't to lose this game down south. In fact, I know a kid who played for La Costa that night. This "kid" is 6'4" and about 240lbs - fit. I talked to him a few weeks prior to the game. He was already concerned. The look in his eyes said this game was already over before the opponents even got there.

Missing a few key players that night, DLS won. To La Costa's credit, they played with a lot of heart.

A few weeks later, ESPN showed a match pitting DLS vs. the perennial champs of Louisiana. Louisiana was without their past QB, John Booty and DLS would lose their QB early in the game, victim to the awful turf of Diablo Valley College. The Spartans rolled - not even a close match.

What the score didn't tell you was how the 200lb linemen of DLS were destroying the 300lb lineman opposing them. One of which was 6'7", well over 300lbs, and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

They ended the season as national champs, and that brings us to today, at the dawn of another season where they will travel yet again to battle the best America has to offer.

You may have already devised that, yes, I do indeed have ties to a small Catholic School in Concord, California. I have to say it pains me to read, as well as hear, the constant rants of "recruiting". I was there and admittedly, I thought I knew of a few instances where recruiting might have been possible... However, after looking into it, I found my own personal allegations to simply be false. Later in life, I realized the flat out implausibility of their recruiting: The kids are all local to the area, and still beat the best there is to offer, both Statewide and Nationally; Invariably, these kids are all undersized compared to their competition; For the amount of profound success DLS has at the High School level, there are but a few that go on to have success in college, and a precious few who go on to the NFL; and finally, I just have to laugh at the idea of 'scouting' out some kid that is running around his 7th grade blacktop playing 'tag' with his friends. It just isn?t plausible.

So the streak rolls and is currently at 151.

De La Salle will lose a game again some day, but quite frankly it will be a lifetime before they are beaten. If they lose a game, they'll just start another streak the next day. They always have, and I can only believe, they always will.

The reviewers bashing this book are invariably looking for an excuse to explain away this school's success. Their rants of "recruiting" are but a sophomoric attempt at belittling something that is both good and true as part of its fundamental nature. They will never know what makes this school so special. But those of us who have been blessed to be affiliated with this -Brotherhood- we all know.

There is no science that can explain why this team is a winner. It is a matter of faith.

Without Faith this team is nothing.

All that Coach Lad has to do is just - let it happen.

Internal Faith in each player, each student, each other... is what makes these kids true Champions. They are winners because of who they are and it is depicted each season in what they do.

I'm not even a football fan....

As the mother of three former high school football players who remains largely indifferent to the sport even now, I found myself surprisingly captivated by this story. Powerfully and tightly written, it early on evoked strong emotions and a growing fascination with Head Coach Ladouceur's methodology. As one of the team members said, "If you think Coach (Ladouceur) is inspiring on the football field, you ought to be in his Religion class."
The Coach is clearly unique among high school football coaches, This book is about a season of individual football games, the team players, the assistant coaches, and Coach Lad. I quickly grew to care deeply about every one of them.
As one of the boys chided a boasting parent, "Dad, it's not about winning." Indeed, it's not, not really at all, and that's what is so intriguing about this coach and this team. It's not even about football. Corny as it may sound, it's about love.

A DLS Alum Speaks Out

As a former student of coach Lad (not player) let me just say that you have to see it to believe it. He is a quiet, intelligent, polite, and compelling individual. Something about him makes you want to do your absolute best and never let him down. That is what he brings out in his players. He is the best type pf leader, one who doesn't need to threaten nor coddle, rather his presence alone does the job. In addition he also happens to be an offensive genius on the field. In terms of the "recruiting" comments, I must agree with the previous writers by simply saying that DLS doen't recruit nor will they ever need to recruit in the distant future. The fact of the matter is since DLS played mostly public schools in their division, and these schools could only have students who lived in their district attend the school, wheras DLS could bring in students from Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Benicia, etc., in addition to Concord. While their talent pool may have been deeper, I would never go so far as to say that they recruited. All the HATERS are just jealous. This book really illustrates the respect Coach has from his players, his students, and the Bay Area athletic community, And I am happy to count myself among them. "St. Jean Baptist De La Salle - Pray for us!"

About the Author
Paul Moon lectures in New Zealand history at the Auckland University of Technology and has a growing reputation as an original and well-informed historian. He is the author of a number of books on New Zealand history, specialising in Treaty issues and the early years of European settlement - his most recent work is The Newest Country in the World: A History of New Zealand in the Decade of the Treaty.

I thought this book was good - particularly the first 2/3rds

I'm Maori - staunchly so. I thought this book was good - particularly the first 2/3rds. The practice is abhorrent (my ancestors engaged in it with gusto so its part of my heritage and I'm more than equipped to make this statement). Interestingly by the turn of the 19th century Maori writers of the day were openly scornful of 'kaitangata' practices that their own grandfathers and fathers had been part of.

I have no patience for critics who accuse the author of cultural relativism, cultural appropriation, cultural misunderstanding, and even racism. These are not critiques of the book but rather a sign of the accusers discomfort with the truth they are confronted with. My ancestors ate people - that's what they did. And the practice was widespread and a well integrated part of the culture. You can't gloss over it or try and put a spin that somehow makes the practice 'ok'. They didn't engage in the practice for spiritual reasons or whatever. I'm sure no victim of kaitangata went into the hangi saying 'at least I'm being eaten for cultural and spiritual reasons'.

I did struggle a little with section 5 onwards. The argument seemed over reached re 'revisionist apostasy'. But other than that a good and thought provoking read.

BTW we Maori are big enough and tough enough to take a bit of academic critique of our (old) practices.

A balanced and well argued account on Maori cannibalism. The testimony of the numerous witnesses, along with the Maori oral histories, and the archaeological proof, should surely challenge any naive celebration of indigenous culture.

Thought Provoking

This is a thought provoking read and probably not for someone wanting only entertainment. However, it provides a probably more authentic look at early Maori life than many of the new age revisionist views, which can tend to portray some sort of lost idyllic utopia. It is food for thought as to how much the hardships and horrors of the past may subconsciously still be affecting Maori to this day and manifesting in some of the social problems that are evident in contemporary New Zealand.

Grade 10 Up-Russel Middlebrook is a sophomore at Goodkind High School. He has a secret crush on a baseball jock, Kevin Land, and soon discovers that Kevin is also gay. The boys become friendly outside of school and set up the "Geography Club" with three other gay students, one of whom is Russel's closest friend, Min. The club members relish the opportunity to discuss their lives and to relate to one another openly and honestly. Eventually, however, intense peer pressure and insecurity take their toll. Russel's relationship with Kevin ends, but the "Geography Club" becomes the "Goodkind High School Gay-Straight-Bisexual Alliance," and the protagonist gains new insight into himself and his place in the world. Hartinger has written a compelling look at the high school scene and the serious consequences of being "different." The plot never falters. Dialogue flows smoothly and is always completely believable, and the occasional use of profanity adds to the realism of the story. Characterization is excellent, with all of the teens emerging as likable but flawed individuals caught in a situation that few young adults could handle with maturity. This author has something to say here, and his message is potent and effective in its delivery. Many teens, both gay and straight, should find this novel intriguing.

A Fantastic First Step

Brent Hartinger's "Geography Club" is told by protagonist, Russell Middlebrook, a closeted gay teenager who is determined to keep his sexuality a secret from everyone. Like with any high school, status is important, and coming out of the closet was a surefire way to be at the bottom of the barrel. The jocks in the locker room are like a completely different species to him, and even his two best friends, Min and Gunmar, are kept in the dark about his attraction to boys.

It's a chance meeting that emerges from an anonymous online conversation that Russell discovers that Kevin Land, jock extraordinaire and Mr. Popular, is gay. It is this encounter that changes Russell's life, and what leads to the establishment of the geography club, which is really the ultra-secret club for Goodkind High School gay students. The five members include Russell and Kevin, Min and her secret girlfriend Therese, and Alex.

This story explores the importance of community, finding strength in your peers when you feel isolated from the rest of the world. It's definitely an experience many gay teens struggle with, debating the aftermath of coming out while trying to find someone else like them. And the members of the geography club coming from different "lands" (social groups and their respective levels of popularity) illustrates this struggle very well.

What I think is really capturing about this book is Russell's narrative voice. It provides the story with a very familiar style, and you're able to really get into the protagonist's mind. And it's more than just Russell navigating who he is as a young gay man, but as a teenager with friends. His moments with Gunmar are particularly illuminating, painting his friend as more than just the weird guy who can't get a girlfriend. Similarly for Min, you really get an idea of who she is through her interactions with Russell. So although Russell is the main character and the story is told from his perspective, the story isn't just about him.

It's about friendship, and bullying, and self-identity beyond sexuality.

If I had to make one complaint, it was that I wanted to see more of Kevin. I feel like Min and Gunmar really grow into characters in their own right, and wanted to see a little more dimension from Kevin. Although, that being said, I love the way we see Kevin through Russell's eyes, and how his feelings shape his behavior, because Russell's reactions ring very true for a high school student experiencing his first romance.

I would definitely recommend this book, and look forward to watching these characters grow as I read the other books in this series.

Amazing

This book is inspirational to people that are not only uncomfortable with their sexuality, but for those other kids that have a hard time fitting in with the high school atmosphere. Geography Club is funny, memorable, and hits you to the core. Applies to kids around the age of 16, but the messages from the book could apply to young or mature kids. This book will throw you with an unexpected twists, and events that remind anyone of the normal high school period.

You follow Russell, a sophomore in a small town, who has trouble finding his true self. Hormonal and lonely, Russell goes to a online gay chat room where he finds out that he isn't the only one in a school of 800 people that's gay. Kevin, Russell's main love interest in the story, I just a Jock on the baseball team that's popular and won't let anything change his status, even if it's Russell. Later, Russell soon finds out that Min, Russell's best friend is bisexual, and dating a Girl Jock soccer player. The four of them, along with the Lefty Rebellion Ike, meet up and find that they have more in common then they originally thought, come up with a secret place for the 5 of them to meet, calling it Geography Club, a place where no high schooler in their right mind would join.

Along with their secret meetings and baseball practice, Gunnar, Russell's other best friend is having trouble finding himself a girlfriend, and makes Russell promise that he would do anything for him to get one, yet still doesn't know Russell's gay. Gunnar makes Russell go on a double date with two girls that Russell could careless, and Russell soon realises that Kimberly, Gunnar's date is only there so Trish, Russell's date, could be there with him. Gunner then forces Russell through a gilt trip to go on another one where Trish forces herself on him. He tells her he's a virgin and that he wants his first time to be special. Later that night Russell kisses Kevin, who shares his feelings for him.

After, the plot starts to kick in when Russell is on the top of the 'Land of Popularity'. Kimberly and Trish spread rumours that he is the Gay Boy everyone had been excusing Brian Bunt, the outcast and prime suspect of bullying at Goodkind, after he denies having sex with Trish at her family's beach house. Russell gets to know how it feels being at the bottom of the social ladder, losing his friends, breaking up with Kevin, and all the while Geography Club is falling apart.

This book is great, the only thing I have to say about it is the price. But once you start Geography Club you won't be able to stop until the end.

AN OUTSTANDING PIECE OF LITERATURE

Now, I'm not saying it took me to all of the places I expected, but it did encourage me. I wish it had been much longer in order to take me to places that weren't covered. It was a little too light-hearted. There is some intensely serious stuff going on here, and I wonder if more avenues could have been explored. I fully understand the author's intent, that is, to target a teen audience, but there seems to be so many missed opportunities to expand the range of the story. As it stands, it is an extremely well written YA novel. But it could have been so much more. The "at a distance" aspect of the story left me wishing for real depth, but then it wouldn't have been suitable for the YA audience. It failed to push the limits of the genre, which wasn't absolutely necessary, but it definitely would have placed it in a whole better class of relevance to today's teen angst regarding outcasts. S. E. Hinton started this sub-genre of literature, but Brett Hartinger failed to continue it. I understand that a motion picture has been released, based on this novel. I hope the screenwriter manages to make the necessary changes in tone in order to make it have more impact.

Great Study Guide

I used this book while pursuing my B.S. in Biochemistry and it is the best study guide I ever used. It covers all of the primary topics in undergraduate biochemistry and gives pertinent examples without extraneous information. I highly recommend it as a study aid, especially for standardized tests.

Great supplement

I am a graduate student currently taking the first semester course of a two-semester run of biochemistry. If you are going to take a biochem course, GET THIS OUTLINE. Textbooks are pretty cumbersome, and after reading a given text chapter, it's nice to have a supplement like this to refer to for clarification. It also provides lots of sample problems/questions, all of which will lead to greater understanding of the material that you're learning. I highly recommend this outline.

I live in Ukraine, a country not known for its prosperity. When I ordered this book back in 1999 (from other online source, actually), the order cost me about my whole month salary, together with shipping expenses. When I received it, I obviously tended to be rather critical. Frankly, I was disappointed by monochrome photos in the book at first ;) That was before I tried to build my first guitar...
Now, 5 years later after the purchase, I keep looking into this book and find many invaluable subtle things that are very important for success. The material is explained in a very clear manner (English is not my mother tongue, by the way) and I appreciated the fact that the authors show how to get away with basic simple tools to build fine instruments. I'm not a super reviewer, but I really love this book (it isn't the only book on guitar making in my collection, so I could do some comparison).
I agree, this book is a Bible on guitar making.

Probably the best do-it-yourself guide to making a guitar!

As a chronic do-it-yourselfer my intest in playing guitar
has spawned an interest in building a guitar. I found this
tome after years of searching the stacks at my local library,
and I instantly fell in love with it. It is quite clearly
written and each step is explained in exquisite detail.
The authors have divided up the steps into several short
procedures so that the reader does not feel overwhelmed.
Each procedure is profusely illustrated and accompanied
in most cases by a list of materials and tools required.
Cognizant that the lay carpenter probably does not have much
in the way of woodworking tools, the authors pare down
the list of tools needed to a manageable list available
at most hardware stores, mostly hand tools. The authors
also include an up to date list of catalog suppliers of
necessary parts, tools, and woods.

As a technical writer and luthier, I can vouch for this tome on both accounts. It explains guitarmaking in such detail that it does not need to include any patterns; after reading this book, you will understand the instrument well enough to build one on a desert island from memory. Although the paperback edition is quite sturdy, I used mine until it fell apart. Buy the hardback.

This book has everything I've ever really needed to look up. It covers a lot of different topics, gives you specifications that you see all the time, and so much more. As an interior design student, I highly suggest it for other students and professionals as well. I've purchased a lot of interior design books over the last few years and this one has probably been the most useful.

This book is super concise but thorough, like a cliff notes of interior design, and bored me so bad I realized a hobby is enough for me. Great for students, professionals, perfectionists, or people currently building a home to understand what their designers and architects are doing and why.

I would like Ms. Deveson to know that I have mourned ...

I have just finished reading this heart wrenching account of the devastations experienced by this lovely family. The copyright date is 1991 and the year today is 2016 and her account still has as dynamic impact as it did when it first was published. I would like Ms. Deveson to know that I have mourned the experience and loss of Jonathan like it was yesterday. So in essence Jonathan lives on and will in my heart and mind forever. I would like for her to be aware of this. She needs to know that those of us who are struggling with this illness in someone we love even today are able to gain the utmost in depth understanding of what is happening because of her willingness to share her experience. It is an absolute tragedy that this illness is still so extremely debilitating worldwide today the same at it was back then. Many, many thanks to her for caring enough to share her heartbreaking story. She has helped me and my family understand our current situation with our family member better than any of the other 20+ books that we have referenced in the past year and half as we searchede for understanding. God bless her.

An absolutely tragic real life account of one families struggle with schizophrenia. Well written but heart wrenching. This book will scare you but also gives you so much insight and the strength to work hard to find help no matter the cost. My heart goes out to this mother.
