This book is the best "French made" grammar book for international students. It gives both explanations and exercises on different grammar aspects of French language! I studied in France and this was the book we used every day in class. If you go through all of its lessons, you will master French grammar very well!

Though grounded in the harsh realities of civil conflict in Central America, these essays have broad relevance in a world where political and social turmoil determines the conditions of daily life for so many. In them we encounter Martín-Baró's humane, impassioned voice, reaffirming the essential connections among mental health, human rights, and the struggle against injustice. His analysis of contemporary social problems, and of the failure of the social sciences to address those problems, permits us to understand not only the substance of his contribution to social thought but also his lifelong commitment to the campesinos of El Salvador.

Martin-Baro was a Spanish-born Jesuit priest and a University of Chicago-trained psychologist, teacher, and administrator at El Salvador's Universidad Centroamericana. Along with five other Jesuits, their housekeeper, and her teenaged daughter, he was murdered by soldiers in November 1989. The murders outraged the world. Having lived in a country where poverty and government oppression was the norm, Martin-Baro's aim in his work and writing was always human liberation. For the first translation of his writings into English, the editors have selected various journal articles from his long career. Most poignantly, Martin-Baro argues that traditional psychology's image of the human person is falsely abstract and fails to consider the real-life social and economic conditions that form people. Not in the line of traditional social psychology, these essays nonetheless offer an important argument from an important man. Recommended especially for academic collections in psychology or social theory.

Canonize This Man, Please

Ignacio Martin-Baro is probably better known in the U.S. as one of the slain Jesuit priests of El Salvador than as the ingenious psychologist that he was. Aron and Corne do U.S. psychologists, who are more often than not barred by their lack of facility with the Spanish language from a large body of important psychological literature, a huge favor by editing this carefully chosen and lovingly prepared volume of his translated works. Because the writings they have selected span the period from 1974, shortly before Martin-Baro initiated graduate work at the University of Chicago, to 1989, when he was murdered, we as readers are able to observe the maturation of his perspective as well as the many ways he applied his psychological knowledge and training in what can only be described as a "limit situation"-- namely, El Salvador in the late l970s through the mid 1980s. In these works, Martin-Baro addressed several themes of increasing global significance, including the effects political repression on the human psyche, the effects of war on children, the relation between religious ideology and political activity, and the nature of industrial psychology from the perspective of the under- and unemployed. Of greatest significance to psychologists, however, were his overarching themes, namely, the collusive role of mainstream psychology in human oppression and the necessary role of the psychologist in human liberation. Borrowing from Freire's famed concept of conscientizacao, Martin-Baro demonstrated how psychologists can act as agents of the development of critical consciousness, both through their nurturance of individuals in the process of psychological healing and development and through their interventions, as privileged and powerful members of society, upon the diseased socio-economic/political system itself. Through their insightful, passionate, and well-researched commentary, Aron and Corne demonstrate that Martin-Baro indeed lived and died by his praxis, proving that psychology's current state of critical inertia is not a necessary condition. In my opinion, Martin-Baro is destined to become the patron saint of psychology--and, boy, does it need one.

Great Book: Exact Same As "Adventures In God" word for word.

This is a great book of various healings and miracles in the life of John G. Lake after death and illness almost wiped out his entire family and his sister brother in law and wife were all on their deathbeds simultaneously, one went to a Christian healing ministry for prayer and was miracously brought back from the very brink of death. After witnessing the evident power of Jesus Christ to heal, He went to each family member in turn and they were all healed. News got around and people from all over the globe came to them to get prayed for and tens of thousands were healed. These are the stories of some things he was emboldened to do after his faith was ignited. Like the story in india where he spied a mother leaving her crippled child to die in the mountains(where he was praying unseen) he goes to the child heals him and he hides as the child leaps up and runs after his mother. (great book but BEWARE it is word for word the same as "Adventures in God" (which costs more)
And that book dosen't have this story.

I honestly bought this book for my Kindle App because it was very inexpensive and it sounded like I wouldn't totally be bored stiff...when I actually read the book I went back to make sure I had only paid as little as I thought I had. One of the single most powerful books I have ever read. Very challenging and a great read!

About the Author
Charlise Lyles was born in Cleveland in 1959. She is an alumna of Hawken Upper School, the A Better Chance program, and a 1981 graduate of Smith College. Lyles is the co-founding editor of Catalyst Cleveland, now Catalyst Ohio magazine, which analyzes urban school improvement issues. Under Lyle’s leadership, Catalyst twice won a Clarion Award from the national Association of Women in Communication as well as awards from the Ohio Society for Professional Journalists and the Press Club of Cleveland. In 2009, Lyles was a finalist for a National Association of Black Journalists commentary award. In 2008 she was selected as a Fellow in the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs/Jouralism at the John Glenn School at The Ohio State University. After ten years, Lyles left Catalyst in 2009 to pursue other ventures in eduation equality and creative writing. She currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Wonderful story, beautifully written

I read this book a few years ago and I still buy it to share with teenage girls whenever I need a birthday or holiday gift. It's a terrific story about a little girl's love of reading, her relationship with a father who cannot provide for the family, her early teen years spent in the Cleveland housing projects and, finally, her experience attending a fancy, "country day" type prep (high) school in the late 1970s. I found it interesting that the housing authority that managed "the projects" promised their residents all sorts of "programs" to create better lives for themselves. Of course, none of these programs delivered. What did deliver for Ms. Lyles was the public library. Every summer she took out loads of books and read, read, read. But this love of reading was never nurtured in the classroom and she was ultimately placed in classes with the "slow" kids, mainly for disciplinary reasons. Thank goodness one teacher in her junior High recognized her abilities and pushed her to excel. It just goes to show that education is a contact sport, a personal connection between teacher and student. And that we ought to be paying our teachers appropriately for the impact that they make on the lives of our youth...the future.

Proud to know the author

Sometimes I buy books and don't get around to reading them right away. Such is the case with this book, and I'll justify my slowness in getting around to it by saying it was definitely worth the wait--well-written and miles above some of the semi-fictitious, superficial memoirs that have been published in recent years. Charlise and I are the same age, and I spent much of my growing up in Ohio as well, in a working-class neighborhood where the local black high school wasn't up to par. So like the author, I and my siblings rode the bus across town--and though we didn't go to a tony private school, we did attend a mostly-white public high school. Our circumstances weren't identical, but the overarching theme of greater opportunity through high-quality education holds true. I can relate to so much of what Charlise writes about and can only say that these stories of 'our generation,' the first to have access to the type of education that generations of whites take for granted, need to be told, and read by everyone no matter what race.

Amazing story - amazing young woman.

Rating of "I love it" really isn't what 5 stars means in this context. For me it meant "I was blown away by it!" Humbled - sobered. Charlise Lyles is one tough cookie - without the roughness that that usually implies. The telling of her early life is a reality check for anyone who thinks they know what it's like to find themselves in her circumstances. I served on the board of our local A Better Chance program and wish I had read her book earlier. Every board member - resident director - tutor - host family - teacher - should have a better idea of what these students have gone through before they arrive in this foreign "promised" land they find themselves in. Her suggestion regarding more orientation is really needed and once they arrive there should be better back-up - moral support - an omsbudman - to help bridge the gap between here and there. We have a lot to learn. We were flying blind when we started our program in 1973 but I'm glad we didn't let that stop us.. Wish she had written - or will write another book.

Forgot to mention that I found this book by accident while looking for "The Diary of A. N." There was no record of that book anywhere - but Amazon located this similar book (subject matter) for me. I read it in the first 24 hours after it arrived - then passed it on to my husband who did the same - then to another friend who had also served on the ABC board - he read it in record time too. I intend to make it known to many more people. Thank you Amazon - thank you Charlise Lyles.
