About the Author
Born in 1968, during a turbulent time of the Viet Nam War, Sister Dang Nghiem graduated from a prestigious medical school and was a practicing doctor at UCSF medical hospital. She is a nun in the community of Thich Nhat Hanh and currently resides at Deer Park monastery near San Diego, CA.

A beautiful story beautifully told

A beautiful story beautifully told. Sister D helps me understand monasticism in the heart, a subject I have much contemplated. She helps me see Vietnam, and tragedy in general, from a personal perspective, actually from many perspectives. The book is full of love and prompts one to love much.

A Cultural Coming of Age Story

Sister Dang Nghiem's story is one I would not expect to be written by a nun. That it came from the same community I practice with and that I know her personally was an added joy. The story itself builds from the foundation of her early childhood experiences with sexual abuse and war in Vietnam, family dysfunction, and later experiences with a partner when she moved to the US. Somewhat disjointed character development and story plot made it difficult to follow at the start. The latter half was written with greater bravado, and focused on her work as a doctor into her move to ordain as a nun. To see a monastic practitioner write about their challenges with the practice inside the monastery, and how they overcome them, aroused a confidence for my own chosen path within the tradition. It made a nun, who I look up to, into a human being--her guidance as a teacher all the more accessible to ordinary people like myself. Extraordinary about Healing that some may overlook, is its portrayal of Vietnamese-American life. It is a story of social-cultural and historical importance. Born to an American soldier and a Vietnamese-born mom, Sister Dang's story is a record of life in our current times. It is a cultural coming of age story that proves quintessential in the presence of Dharma in the West, and in healing the wounds of war within our country and abroad.

This short memoir traces a path from delusion to engaged Buddhism, wrinkles and all. A tribute to the solidity of Sister Dang Nghiem's faith in her practice, as well as to her teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. Sweet without pity; truth without bitterness. An inspiring read.

About the Author
Arthur Cotterell was formerly principal of Kingston College, London. He has lived and travelled widely in Asia and Southeast Asia, and has devoted much of his life to writing on the region. In 1980, he published The First Emperor of China, whose account of Qin Shi Huangdi’s remarkable reign was translated into seven languages. Among his recent books are Western Power in Asia: Its Slow Rise and Swift Fall 1415-1999, published in 2010, and described by The Japan Times as“three-dimensional historiography at its best”; and Asia: A Concise History, published in 2011.

It's a real pity as it is a good book to read

I also purchased this e book. I got a replacement download file for this e book. Unfortunately i have not been able to increase the font size for the text. I can do that that for other e-books on my kindle. Im nearly 60 and I have difficulty in reading small text. It's a real pity as it is a good book to read !!

Amazon's problem instead of author's

Just purchased the title with my Kindle but it doesn't work properly, the texts are not displayed correctly. Only parts of the page is shown, and there are occassions that words are overlapped... With these problems, I can't even start reading the book... Tried in vein to fix it by deleting it from the device and download it again from the Cloud. Also, the system frequently hanged while going through pages, so it's quite likely that something is wrong while developing the digital version of this title. Is Amazon going to fix it for me or at least refund? (Remarks: I have asked for refund already at amazon.com; but I would very much like to purchase it again once Amazon ensures the problems are fixed).
By the way, I have purchased dozen of titles via Kindle and it's the first time facing such unpleasant problems.

Starred Review. Ferran Adria, head chef at elBulli, near Barcelona, is widely considered one of the most innovative artists currently working in food. The term "artist" is not rhetorical: Adria was (controversially) invited to Kassel in 2007 to take part in documenta, one of the world's most important international art exhibitions. Even more controversial was Adria's refusal to come to them-instead, he insisted that elBulli become an official documenta venue. Consequently, the exhibit found curator Roger Buergel flying two patrons per day to Costa Brava (860 miles away) to experience Adria's art. Opening essays provide background on Adria, including about 40 pages of color photos of Adria's dishes, taken by the chef over two decades at elBulli. Interesting, Eclectic View

Similar to last year's A Day at El Bulli, this volume provides a thought-provoking look into the world of Ferran Adria. This work approaches the topic from the standpoint of food-as-art with the central theme being a modern art exhibit in Kassel, Germany, and Mr. Adria's participation in this hundred-day 'documenta 12'. Two documenta visitors per day were invited to dine at elBulli (nearby in Spain) and record their experience. The bulk of the book is comprised of sample menu pictures and descriptions along with actual attendee feedback. In this fashion, elBulli became one more exhibit in the event, and the feedback is taken as art criticism. The majority of the book (the middle half of the book's 350 pages) is dedicated to the art exhibit, as described. The full contents with page numbers is:

Get the book. If only for the pictorial history of all of Ferran Adria's work. At the Amazon price it's a lot of fun for the foodie home chef. Some of the Intellectual introspection on the food you can take or leave, but I found the viewpoints damned interesting. Food really can be art if you start with that thought!

First off, I must offer a warning: this book is best for those who are interested in food from an artistic standpoint. Admittedly, if you don't fall into the aforementioned group, you will probably be bored stiff.

I am one of those. Part chef, part artist, I aspire to this realm of creativity, which seems beyond human. For me the book was fascinating. The concept of accepting something edible into the realm of fine art is a tricky one, but is discussed in great depth and breadth in this book. It was a fairly easy read as well, I finished it in a transcontinental flight in about 6 hours, start to finish, as much of it is written conversation.

For those like myself, I cannot recommend this book enough. It is fun and informative, and looks great on a bookshelf.

Interesting and Easy Read

The book arrived quickly and in brand new, perfect condition. So far, I have read the first two chapters of this book for a class I am taking. The book is interesting, easy to follow, and full of helpful information. The real case studies included at the end of each chapter are great to read, though the author leaves the ending open for the student to propose solutions. The book's appendix has several helpful resources such as steps to analyze case studies/business problems and sample business letters, memos, and other written communications.

Excellent Islamic History Book

I am Muslim and thought this book gave a very straightforward, honest, and neutral history of Islam. The author is a non-Muslim scholar of Islam much like Karen Armstrong, John Esposito, William Montgomery Watt, and others. I really appreciate this book as the author writes many wonderful things, especially about the life of Prophet Muhammad and the Qur'an.

Great Book!!

This book is great I bought this in addition to the required book for our maternal-newborn clinical rotation and it was a great addition. It provides information in a nice clear and concise format. There is not a lot of fluff and it is easy to read! I used this book more than the required textbook. It is more like reading someone's notes they took from a class or book. If you are looking for wordy descriptions and pages of the same information with one simple concept that could be summarized in a few sentences then this book is not for you. If you are looking to direct your studying and getting important information with minimal reading than this is the book for you! I was glad I purchased this extra book. Everyone else wanted to share and I loaned it out several times during the semester.

This book is just ok in my opinion. I like a text book with TEXT and lots of it. This book is to "listy"...it is just bullet after bullet of info. It's to the point I guess, but I prefer a classic textbook with more explanation.

This is an amazing book, very thorough and interesting from beginning to ...

This is an amazing book, very thorough and interesting from beginning to end. I had just recently finished reading "The Orphan Master's Son" which is an amazing amazing novel about life in North Korea which also has a character in the concentration camps, so although that book was rooted in some fact, it was a novel and I really wanted to read a factual account of someone who had been in the concentration camps in North Korea. This book is eye opening and should be read by every one! Maybe I am biased because I am fascinated by North Korea, but I would highly recommend reading The Orphan Master's Son which is one of the best novels I have ever read and is very much a fantasy, but covers a lot of different aspects of life in different places in North Korea; and then reading The Aquariums of Pyongyang to read about one man's actual experience. I think these books in the reverse order may make the Orphan Master's Son seem a little too far-fetched. I'm rambling now.. read this book! Read both books! Read any other books about the DPRK that you can get your hands on to spread awareness of the human rights atrocities being committed on a daily basis.

North Korea: A Country or The World's Largest Prison Camp!

Chol-Hwan Kang was born to Korean parents of Japanese residency in Pyongyang, North Korea. His family was promised a better life in North Korea. They were lied too. Kang would be raised in forbidden North Korea and imprisoned at nine years old with his family in camp 15.

Kang's memoir of his life in North Korea is moving, haunting, and revealing about the country's holding it's population. Kang describes how life is in his country. With the threat of return to the prison camp, he flees the country and escapes to China and later South Korea.

Upon his life in exile, Kang writes the truth to expose the hardships of North Koreans. The world needs to understand how North Koreans are suffering under the communist regime. The North Koreans are malnourished by food shortages and imprisoned in their country. They are not free by any means. Freedom to North Koreans would be able to speak and live freely without fear.

To understand life in North Korea, Kang gives his unique perspective about his life there. This book is a mind-blowing read if you never read about North Korea before.

Necessary Read

Beautifully written account of the horrors of a North Korean concentration camp. Not only do you learn of the personal trials of this young man, but the book contains a summary of how North Korea became North Korea. This is the type of account that needs to come out to expose such a reclusive country and their insane human rights violations.

This account is from a man who did not start out in the North Korean concentration camps, but rather was sent there when he was a young boy. If you're interested in his account, I would also recommend reading "Escape from Camp 14", which is an account from a man born in a North Korean camp.
