Excellent book for preparation for the ABFM board exam.

I owned the prior edition and gave it only four stars because it lacked a chapter on prenatal care. This edition corrects that omission. I have been using this book for the past month to prepare for the April 2015 re-certification, which I first took in 1986. I highly recommend this book for that purpose. Each disease section is organized so you can jump right to the section you want. For me, the symptoms, signs and labs are very familiar, but the treatments have all changed a lot over 30 years, so I jump to that. The book is written mostly by family medicine faculty rather than other specialists, so they know what we see and focus on that, rather than obscure diseases that we will refer out anyway. I owned both the print and kindle editions for the 3rd edition. The formatting of the numerous tables don't format well in the kindle edition, so I strongly recommend the print version.

Excellent book

I just bought this book and I am actually want to apply for residency of family medicine. I can say that this book is simple and organized and really it really refresh my memories especially I passed USMLE step 3 in 2013 and need to refresh my memory and it is written by family physicians and this is very important not by internists or surgeons with my full respect to them

well organized book with excellent instructional resources

very well organized book on managing conflict. Has useful power points, quizzes, and instructional materials for classroom instruction. The case stories are simplistic. They do illustrate the points the authors wish to make. However, the students became bored with the same cast of characters that were carried throughout the book. Use of real cases and current events would improve instruction.

POWERFUL!

I was going to say that this is less a book of poetry than a work of art, but a book of poetry is a work of art and especially these days, a work of hope. There are those about who are experimenting with the question of what it is that makes a book, and I would say that Metres belongs in what I take to be a small, thoughtful and provocative crowd. Not only has he drawn his inspiration from a wide variety of sources, he has included diagrams that overlay some poems, fingerprints and calligraphy.

Most visible - after the stunning cover art (http://aalkadhi.com/content/I_am_baghdad/) - are the redactions. In Guantanamo Diary, an excellent companion piece, they are political. Here too, they are poltical, but they are also art, negative space reclaimed, much in the spirit of a British artist I've always admired, Rachel Whiteread (https://www.gagosian.com/artists/rachel-whiteread/selected-works).

But Metres' use of the redaction is not a gimmick. From the title of the collection, StANDard OPERAting procedure, to the opening invocation in 'Illumination of the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew' (if the flesh is the text of God / bid a voice to rise / / & rise again) to the closing prayer, 'Compline' (We lift the blinds, look out into ink / For light. My God, my God, open the spine binding our sight), Metres is a master of juxtaposition, placing words, images, even punctuation next to (and on top) of each other as he explores power, particularly the power of language, in the Iraqi conflict, in the cells of Guantanamo.

Consider the line quoted above from 'Compline.' It's the last poem of the collection, and by then almost every word of those lines carries tremendous weight. Who does Metres mean by 'we'? Does 'lift' have a positive connotation? Does it suggest physical force? What and who is blind? Blindfolded? And we see ink? Words? There's freedom there? Power? A reclaiming? And the first 'My God,' how should we say it? And what of the possessive? Whose God is it? The 'spine' of a book (as we get set to close Metres'?) "Binding' - Again, who is bound? Shock and Awe

Metres reminds us that "Somewhere someone's hands danced / over a keyboard to deliver the ordnance." Here, drone strike and typescript poem dovetail uncomfortably in the figure of a dexterous manipulated dance, the keyboard also suggesting an organ or Moog synthesizer to score this operatic sand opus for all who have ears to hear. Such overlays are further echoed in this book as object, vellum over paper enacting claustrophobic fatalities: "And: this hole was where he died, where they drove through a berm, into the Tigris. They told me about the scratch marks. I tried not to look, but I couldn't stop thinking about him trying to scratch his way out, the tank filling with water." Told me about. Tried not to look. Couldn't stop thinking. This reminds me of poetry's moral imperative as antidote to social mayhem, exemplifying Roethke's quip how "in a dark time, the eye begins to see." And shocked and awed voices begin to sing.

An Absolute Gem

Claude Shannon died last year, and it's really disgraceful that his name is not a household word in the manner of Einstein and Newton. He really WAS the Isaac Newton of communications theory, and his master's thesis on Boolean logic applied to circuits is probably the most cited ever.
This is the ONLY book of which I am aware which attempts to present Shannon's results to the educated lay reader, and Pierce does a crackerjack job of it. Notwithstanding, this is not a book for the casual reader. The ideas underlying the theory are inherently subtle and mathematical, although there are numerous practical manifestations of them in nature, and in human "information transmission" behavior. On the other hand, this is a work which repays all effort invested in its mastery many times over.

Good intro but dated

The update of this book should have been updated. While it is understandable that at the time of the first print of this book in 1961 the author saw little or no practical use for Shannon's information theory (other than perhaps his channel capacity theorem) it was well known by the second printing in 1980 that it has profound implications in studying biology (and modern technology). For instance in an article published in Nature in 1967, A. L. MacKay showed how the genetic code is highly optimal using Huffman's algorithm. More recently Ardell and Sella (with summaries available on the net) have 'demonstrated that the code's present structure was also shaped by natural selection (though non-Darwinian, see below). In this process, the codons - the triplets of nucleotides that map a particular nucleic acid sequence into proteins - are arranged to minimize the negative effects of genetic error, and to optimize the process of 'readout' of genes during protein synthesis. By permuting all 20 amino acids across all possible codon sets, both groups found that the 'universal' genetic code - the one found in nearly every organism on earth...-falls in the best .0001% of all possible codes and perhaps even better, in terms of its capacity to be an error-correcting code...' By showing modifications are possible in one generation the evidence points away from Crick's thesis of the genetic code being a 'fozen accident' but instead possible Lamarckian beginnings with horizantal gene transfer leading to Carl Woese's early RNA World hypothesis before Darwinian vertical descent begins.

The author also tends to perpetuate the widespread misunderstanding (generally by physicists who tend to contort the meaning away from Shannon's into 'available' states or choices such as with Black Holes) that information is uncertainty; he confuses (readers potentially with) surprise versus information by not taking into account the other half of the necessary equation for information transmission, being noise. He says "The amount of information conveyed by the message increases as the amount of uncertainty as to what message actually will be produced becomes greater." [pg 23] While he clears this up in a later chapter on noise it becomes so technical that it appears most readers of Shannon's theory have been mislead. At this point the scientists (usually physicists who actually work with a different concept of 'available information') typically equate the uncertainty with Kolmogorov complexity and assume that maximum information and complexity is randomess.

For instance consider Philip Nelson's comment in his book Biological Physics that 'random messages carry the most information!' In one footnote of his nearly 600 page book he effectively dismisses all of Nobel Prize winner Shannon's information achievements.

Much of the trouble is with terminology. We think of noise as impure sound. Shannon tried to avoid this problem by introducing the term 'equivocation' but on the other hand this seems to have no intuitive meaning in this context. One really has to go to the math to sort it out. The critical equation to potentially eradicate the confusion does not appear in the book -

H is an entropy-like formula without Boltzman's constant; however the concepts are very different. (Reportedly Von Neuman told Shannon in the 1940's to call his uncertainty 'entropy, as noone will know what you mean!' Apparently this is still working!) Entropy of the universe apparently increases under the 2nd law of thermodynamics (at least ignoring gravity and extensivity), information begins and ends with life (one needs a recognizer to measure it). A random message in fact carries no information as there is no resolution (reduction) of uncertainty. This is all explained at molecular biologist's Dr. Tom Schneider's website, I know of no other comprehensive source and certainly no book that gets it right. (As yet! 'Hope springs eternal!' A. Pope; 1688 - 1744)

Highly Recommended for anyone serious about doing well on the GMAT

When I first started studying for the GMAT, I had not heard of Manhatten GMAT, though I was impressed with the positive feedback they received on Amazon. Only a few weeks into studying I now understand why they have received such positive feedback. I have tasted their Koolaid and highly recommend using their entire suite of tools for all things GMAT related...

Manhatten has come very close to perfecting the art of studying for the GMAT. Their strategy guides provide the most comprehensive, easy to understand GMAT roadmap on the market. I highly recommend purchasing the entire study guide if you are just beginning your studies, or purchase any of their 8 strategy guides if you need targeted practice in a specific area on the GMAT.

Who should use these guides:
Anyone who is serious about getting a good score on the GMAT AND has the time to invest in getting that great score. Manhatten GMAT's philosophy is to teach students to "do more with more" rather than to "do more with less". This is a great concept for anyone who has the time to invest in learning the test and for those with the desire to score well above average.

Who shouldn't buy these guides:
Those who don't have time to invest and just need a basic understanding of the test. Manhatten really caters to those who are trying to get above a 600 (if not above a 700) on the GMAT. If you are a last minute studier or don't have the desire to ace the test, then I would recommend going with either Kaplan or just the Official Guides provided by the test makers.

Bottom Line:
Manhatten GMAT provides the most comprehensive, in depth coverage of the GMAT. These books, which are accompanied by access to their online practice center (and 6 practice exams), are worth the premium compared to other study material.

The best GMAT prep solution I have seen!

Context on my usage:
I took the exam in March 2012 of this year. I studied intensively for approximately three weeks (however, I am historically a high performer on standardized exams so for those with greater ground to cover I would suggest allocating more time). I browsed through materials from four major brands before making a selection.

Personal commentary/opinion/experience:
It is much easier to improve your quantitative score than your verbal score, no matter what your starting proficiency. The rules of grammar are riddled with exceptions, and if the nuances are not already ingrained in your mind from years of usage, it will be difficult to internalize over the course of months. Getting problems wrong, understanding the mistake, and remembering it for the next time will be more helpful than trying to memorize rules and exceptions. The math sections, on the other hand, are time-constrained. The hardest problems test the same concepts as the simple ones, but they require multiple steps. The more rules and equations you internalize, the faster you will become. The faster you can either do the problem or assess that it is not doable in a reasonable amount of time, the better your score will be.

Pros:
This is truly a case of getting what you pay for. I would not recommend any of the single-volume prep materials offered by the major test prep brands. You get eight volumes - one dedicated to each question type. You also get access to online resources including computer adaptive diagnostic and practice exams, detailed score analysis, and (somewhat less useful) problem set banks for extra practice. What truly sets this product apart, however, is not the quantity but the approach.

This quality is best described by addressing the math and verbal sections separately. The math sections start with foundational concepts and build up from there. If you go through all the material, you will know all of the relevant topics in sufficient depth. (This is in contrast to the competing solutions, which often only scratch the surface of actual material and instead focus on "tips and tricks" like the process of elimination and comparing your guess of the difficulty of the question to what the average test taker would choose).

The verbal sections are somewhat less differentiated from the competition, largely because there is a natural limitation on how much you can absorb. Again, MGMAT definitely goes in more detail and is far more comprehensive, but at the end of the day the average person will not be able to retain all that material. I think churning through problems (as described in the context section) is the best use of time for these sections.

Cons:
You really do have to commit a lot of time to get through everything. If you're just going to rush through it, you are unlikely to end up any better off than if you used the competing offerings.

Parting thoughts:
If you are serious about boosting your score AND willing to put in the time and effort, this is the product you want. However... IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't buy this edition because the exam changed in mid-2012. A new section (integrated reasoning) was added, which the newer edition incorporates. I can only imagine the fundamental approach to the other sections remain the same, but I do not know that firsthand.

Manhattan GMAT set of 8 - Good deal

This books are very comprehensive, but will involve a lot more involvement than say, a Kaplan book set. This doesn't focus on "beating" the test with tips and tricks, but rather beating it with sheer brainpower. These books are mini classes on the subjects they relate to, teaching you how to actually do the problems and giving you insight and strategy on using that knowledge with the GMATs actual questions. I recommend getting the GMAT review book (the one issued by the GMAT itself) with these as these books will reference questions from these in the lessons. Everyone says that these books will result in a higher score than other publishers series and I totally see it, you just have to put forth the effort. Give yourself at least a month and a half to get through all these books (maybe more, maybe less depending on your strengths and weaknesses) as the material is dense and slow moving. Saying that, the books aren't boring, but written in a light, fun manner. There's just a lot of information to get through.

All in all, the best set of books I've found. Get the GMAT review book with this set though.
