dated but excellent

Written in 1882, The Scientific Evidences of Organic Evolution by George Romanes, is obviously a bit dated. That is not a criticism, quite the opposite. Using much less evidence for organic evolution then we have today he not only shows it for the scientifically undebateable reality it represents, but destroys not only the myth of specific creation but also the misguided idea of intelligent design. He uses some of the favorite arguments of intelligent design, such as the evolution of the eye, to show how absurd, and in his word "impious" the concept is. After the scientific arguments Romanes briefly deals with the emotional ones, showing not only that they are ridiculous, but an insult to a supreme being, as that deity would have to be an idiot to have done the things the people who argue for what they call intelligent design claim the deity did. The only criticism of The Scientific Evidences of Organic Evolution come from things Romanes couldn't do anything about, his lack of the evidence we have gathered since his time, things like the genetic and other modern evidence supporting his stance, and the fact that no valid scientific evidence has been found to support those who argue for specific creation or intelligent design

This book has some good info about Evolution, but is a little dated since Romanes was a contemporary of Darwin. Romanes lived 1848-1894.

Macbeth, The Selfish One.

Shakespeare surprises me again with another one of his classics, Macbeth. The story takes place in Scotland, ruled by the Scottish King Duncan. Macbeth, the main character of the play, and Banquo are the Kings generals. They were very successful with defeated two armies, one from Ireland and one from Norway. The king praised his brave generals, but that was enough for Macbeth. He wanted to be king. So he sets his mind to do so. Macbeth is not the only one who wants him to be in power. Lady Macbeth, being his wife wanting the wealth and attention, has the same dream. A dream to have King Duncan murdered. Macbeth stabs Duncan in his sleep, but plan to blame it on the chamberlains. But how do they do it? By getting the chamberlains drunk, so when they wake up the next morning, their memory would be gone. Giving Macbeth the right to assume the kingship. But there is still an obstacle in the way. Banquo is just as worthy to become king as Macbeth is. So what does Macbeth presume to do? He hires three murders to kill Banquo to assure he becomes the king of Scotland. The murders were also ordered to kill Banquo son, Fleance, but he escapes into the night before they could reach him. Macbeth’s rage grows inside, as he is still afraid his kingship is in danger. The Macduff and Prince Malcom, family of King Duncan, finds out about Macbeth’s whereabouts from Fleance, they want to challenge Macbeth’s forces. Macduff and Prince Malcom’s forces were much stronger against Macbeth’s. Macduff approached Macbeth, then proceeds to kill and then behead Macbeth, giving the power over to the Prince. Shakespeare gives us examples of tragedy throughout this whole play. Macbeth showed selfishness and greed, giving us a life lesson to appreciate the things we have and have to come to us in the future.

Stick with the original

This book has two parts, one written by Shakespeare (5 stars!) and one written by Mr. McCarthy, who purports to make the story of Macbeth more accessible to modern readers. However, the comparison just doesn't work. McCarthy's writing is juvenile, lowest-common-denominator stuff, replete with typos (get an editor!!) and silly modern usage. Stick with the original Shakespeare!

The play is the thing.

I was at first somewhat wary of this printing. It seemed to be a mass market offering. Yet the price was much less than retail, and Oxford publications have such a good reputation. I was not disappointed.
It has everything I have come to expect and enjoy from Oxford Shakespeare: an excellent introduction that covers all aspects of the play from history to production notes, and challenges actors have and may face. The annotation, footnotes, references, and more are all there. It can be read in total or just the play itself (the annotation providing semantics).
I am no expert on bookbinding or paper. With that said, the jacket and binding seem to be very durable. The paper, although not stated (that I could find) as "acid-free" is certainly of higher quality than the newsprint paper currently popular with many publishers. Unless you are looking for a "quick-read, throw-away" I feel confident you will not be disappointed.

AMAZING! Every MS1 &2 should own!

Being an MS2 trying to effectively study for the boards, you'll find sometimes it takes many books to explain what you are not understanding UNTIL now! I literally only need this book for anatomy,embryology,physiology,pathology and pharmacology (relevant biochem,micro etc are found where needed). The book is written wonderfully, with a conversationalist flow. If you are like me and have trouble just reading lists/bullets of information you HAVE to know, it has been easier to read full chapters of this book compared to all the lists found in First Aid then go quickly review first aid. BUT thank goodness it flows WITH first aid as well. I love the nice side notes which feature key facts or "tie ins"to other chapters or clinical correlations. It help keeps the information feeling less overwhelming while making sure you get the big picture. In fact, there is plenty extra that you can easily annotate into first aid yet not rewrite a book or make you wonder if you are filling first aid with "lower yield facts".As far as organization, I find it much clearer than first aid but it tries to mimic first aid as much as possible.I love how every major pathology has an intro, presentation,diagnosis, treatment and prognosis subheading. I have found myself looking at cases and remembering the presentation or the drug just from reading it displayed that way (vs first aid that separates anatomy,physiology,path and pharm for the same syndrome). It made my qbank review be more efficient. In fact,I really wish I had bought this book earlier and studied it as an adjunct to all my classes (once you get to organ systems)so I would recommend this for first years as well. I think the earlier the better.

AMAZING BOOK

This book is a MUST BUY when studying for my Step 1! I do not think that I would have been able to score a 230+ without this book. It's basically First Aid Step 1 but with paragraphs, more vibrant pictures, and tables. If you are having a hard time with First Aid Step 1 then this is the book for you.

Honestly, I could only go through First Aid Step 1 (2013) if I read it along with watching the Doctors In Training (DIT) videos. This book enabled me to cover the material without the videos.

Excellent content but many proofreading errors

This introductory textbook gives a balanced (neither overly conservative nor overly liberal) introduction to all of the classical interpretive questions. Unfortunately, many proofreading errors found in the previous edition have not been corrected in this edition. Some of these errors are substantive, such as putting all of the prophetic books under the heading "former prophets" on p.18 and putting Jerusalem instead of Samaria as the city conquered by the Assyrians in 722 (in the glossary under "transcolonization"). However, an alert teacher can compensate for these types of flaws in an otherwise very competent presentation of the contents and interpretative issues of Hebrew Bible.

Not for beginners

Though I am a beginning German student, I am fluent in both Spanish and French, and therefore know a little about learning a foreign language. I purchased German Grammer Drills, German Sentence Structure, and the German Verb tenses. The books all state that they are 'Perfect for the Beginning and Intermediate Learners", but this is not the case. The books give a few examples in English, but almost all of the exercises are in German. That's would be ok, if there were a vocabulary key given in English. But there isn't, which makes it a very difficult book to use. In order to use this book, I would have to sit with a dictionary and look up words in almost every sentence. This is very time consuming and impractical. The exercises in the book would be great for someone much farther along in their German studies. The exercises are simple and not complicated, but the fact that there are no translations makes it extremely difficult to use. One of the first exercises asks you to provide nouns that use the same endings as those in parentheses. There is a list of 15 different endings. As a beginning student, I haven't learned enough vocabulary to be able to think of enough nouns to do the exercise. There is no vocabulary given to draw from.
I think it's a great book to use as a review after you have learned quite a bit of German - to brush up on your skills. But this is definitely NOT the book for a beginner.

German Grammar Drills by Ed Swick

"German Grammar Drills" fills a need for students of the language who find the newer teaching approaches short on grammatical elements. The book very systematically presents areas of grammar, beginning with simple ones like noun genders and plurals, and thoroughly reviews the basics. Following the review there are a variety of comprehensive practice drills in workbook format. All answers appear in the back.

Areas covered include noun cases, prepositions, adjectives, contractions, verb tenses, imperatives, reflexive pronouns, modal auxiliaries and double infinitives, conjunctions, relative pronouns, prefixes, comparatives and superlatives, passive voice, subjunctive mood and infinitive clauses.

The book advertises itself as "perfect for beginning and intermediate learners." But a note of caution for beginners: the practice sentences, even in early lessons, contain words and grammatical constructs, including verbs in tenses other than the present, that the new student may not yet have encountered. A self-motivated student with a dictionary can readily overcome this one problem.

I recommend this book most highly for any student really determined to master more than just the tourist's basic stock phrases that many books, especially those for the adult learner, seem to overemphasize. Mastery of this book equals mastery of the German language.

This is the perfect guide as I attempt to refresh my German comprehension in preparation for a trip to Berlin (my last study of the language was more than 10 years ago). The book is extremely well-organized and methodical, and the explanations are clear and useful. The bulk of the book is devoted to exercises, which I find nicely designed to illustrate the concepts. The answers are all at the end.

A bonus to me is that the layout and font are very easy on the eyes, and the book does not feel cluttered with gimmicky charts, diagrams, or illustrations (as far as I can see, there are none).

The only downside, mentioned by another reviewer, is that the book is not truly a beginners book. Someone with no prior experience in the language will likely find this book a little overwhelming. Not only does it assume familiarity with vocabulary (which is easy enough to look up), but it assumes some exposure to typical German word order, the conjugation of verbs, and the change in articles and adjective endings according to case.

If you know the basics however, I highly recommend this volume!
