Essential Reading!

I hardly know where to start. This book is beautiful. Well organized, well laid out, well photographed. But that's not even the important stuff. This book is a must read for everyone interested in food preservation, from beginner to the experienced preserver. I put myself in the latter category and while I knew I'd enjoy reading it, I wondered how much I'd actually learn. Ms. Meredith sure showed me! I can't wait to try a few of her smoking and cheese-making techniques, not to mention the dehydrator jerky. I collect cookbooks and food preservation books and as I read this (from cover to cover) I thought to myself, "This is the new Ball Blue Book, only better." The thing that appeals to me most is that the author teaches us the methods, helps us understand them (why they work), and encourages us to make them our own. Sure, she gives us demonstration recipes for each technique, but love the idea of understanding why something works the way it does, then being able to tinker on my own. This is an essential book for anyone interested in food preservation. Essential.

Finally, a book about food preservation that I can use front-to-back

Tired of seeing books on single-topic methods of food preservation, I was anxious to get my hands on a copy of this book. It hasn't disappointed. It not only offers new pointers and insights into things I was already familiar with (culturing, yogurts) but gives me the perfect practical introduction into methods new to me like lacto-fermentation, salting and smoking, and more—not to mention the perfect set of guidelines for freezing and dehydrating dozens of foods.

The only disappointment I feel is when I come across a great recipe for preserving a food that has already left the farmer's market for the year. But until I get the chance to shop for those foods next year, there is plenty to keep me occupied. I only need more counter space for all of these jars...

OK but needs some editing and further information

As others have written this is a basic guide to preserving food by many different methods. There is a lot of very useful detailed information, carefully organized and well presented on a number of different methods, including some that are as old as the hills and some that are modern and up to the minute. However, and this is a bit caveat, before using some of the recipes and/or methods, one needs to check the recipes carefully because -- and a copy edit should have caught these -- a lot of necessary details are missing. For instance: in the recipe for oven method kale chips the instruction for a large bunch of kale would be a lot more helpful if it gave a weight (your large bunch may be my small one), and also the oven temperature. I looked everywhere for that basic information but it isn't there. It does mention recrisping them by baking them in a preheated 300 degree F oven for 5 minutes but no original temperature is given

Another example is in the pages about root cellaring. A lot of very good information is included but nowhere does it mention problems with rodents and insects. Perhaps Ms. Meredith has "clamped" vegetables successfully, or stored veg and fruit in straw filled old freezers/refrigerators under ground (I sure hope that someone has removed the refrigerants and any toxic substances, as well as taken the hinges off the doors!) but if she had she would have found that such storage methods, while very handy, can lead to nasty infestations of rodents and/or bugs. You have to enclose everything in very fine wire mesh to prevent rodents bellying up to the items in a clamp, and you will have bugs. I urge anyone planning to root cellar to think very carefully about how to exclude rodents, skunks and raccoons as well as other creatures (coyotes, bears, etc.) from burrowing in.

My third example is Elderflower champagne -- there are four ingredients and none of them are elderflowers -- surely elderflowers got omitted? Also, a way to identify elderflowers should be included and some caveats -- elderberries are considered to be mildly poisonous unless cooked and according to my info, all green parts of the plant are poisonous. So if you use elderflowers make sure you only use the flowers.

These are problems that I found on a quick skim. I'm sure that there are more questions that I would raise when I read through.

Ms. Meredith skips lightly over preserving in oil -- this is an method fraught with possible food safety issues. If you preserve garlic in oil it can lead to botulism (if I remember correctly) -- she gives a recipe for infusing rosemary in oil...I'd be VERY careful about preserving anything in oil, even after heating it etc. She is very detailed in her instructions on food safety for some methods and less so on others.............

So, while I think this is a very useful book, it needs some editing -- perhaps in a second edition.

Adiabatic logic is a potential successor for static CMOS circuit design when it comes to ultra-low-power energy consumption. Future development like the evolutionary shrinking of the minimum feature size as well as revolutionary novel transistor concepts will change the gate level savings gained by adiabatic logic. In addition, the impact of worsening degradation effects has to be considered in the design of adiabatic circuits. The impact of the technology trends on the figures of merit of adiabatic logic, energy saving potential and optimum operating frequency, are investigated, as well as degradation related issues. Adiabatic logic benefits from future devices, is not susceptible to Hot Carrier Injection, and shows less impact of Bias Temperature Instability than static CMOS circuits. Major interest also lies on the efficient generation of the applied power-clock signal. This oscillating power supply can be used to save energy in short idle times by disconnecting circuits. An efficient way to generate the power-clock is by means of the synchronous 2N2P LC oscillator, which is also robust with respect to pattern-induced capacitive variations. An easy to implement but powerful power-clock gating supplement is proposed by gating the synchronization signals. Diverse implementations to shut down the system are presented and rated for their applicability and other aspects like energy reduction capability and data retention. Advantageous usage of adiabatic logic requires compact and efficient arithmetic structures. A broad variety of adder structures and a Coordinate Rotation Digital Computer are compared and rated according to energy consumption and area usage, and the resulting energy saving potential against static CMOS proves the ultra-low-power capability of adiabatic logic. In the end, a new circuit topology has to compete with static CMOS also in productivity. On a 130nm test chip, a large scale test vehicle containing an FIR filter was implemented in adiabatic logic, utilizing a standard, library-based design flow, fabricated, measured and compared to simulations of a static CMOS counterpart, with measured saving factors compliant to the values gained by simulation. This leads to the conclusion that adiabatic logic is ready for productive design due to compatibility not only to CMOS technology, but also to electronic design automation (EDA) tools developed for static CMOS system design.

Philip Teichmann studied electrical engineering at the Technische Universität München with a focus on the physics of electronic devices and microelectronics. During his work at the Institute of Technical Electronics at the Technische Univeristät München he focused on the design of circuits for ultra low-power energy consumption. He has authored and co-authored several papers on Adiabatic Logic and presented his work at international conferences.

A very Difficult ,but Brutally insightful Read, expect the unexpected while learning how Your Life was never yours.

I am still reading this very honest look into the Personality disorder that my mother has which she will never admit too.This is a very slow, insidious realization(like the disorder as well) that I am not the imperfect or crazy person I was always lead to believe.You want to think "It is ME causing such stress for my mother" because you are told this over and over but in between if you somehow become the person she wants you to be you are rewarded, though often told many times later you are reminded how ungrateful you are for not appreciating gifts or celebrations that happened over 20 years ago that one would do easily for a child.This author , Nina W. Brown, has such a great approach to walking you through the results of being an adult child of a parent with This Personality Disorder that it is difficult to read, but imperative for your growth. The author makes sure you do not move on to the next chapter with a test from the previous one .You will Learn so much! Expect to remember things you may have repressed.Expect to cry, a lot.Expect to read part of the first chapter , have a realization and put the book down. Expect YOU WILL be ready someday to pick the book up and read it.Expect an emotional roller-coaster. Expect you find that hope after you have learned enough to work this educational book through! good, but books alone are not enough

i bought this book years ago and recently reread it, and i got much more from it for the intervening years of therapy that i pursued. i have dozens of these kinds of books, and i recognize the great value of bibliotherapy; but i sincerely believe that one needs real face-to-face, consistent loving help--it could be from a caring friend, mate, or other relative--, because given the destruction that narcissistic parents leave in their wake, the damage to their children is not easily undone. the beliefs and behavioral patterns of growing up with these people sink deep roots. and since the resulting damage to personality comes from horrific parenting, some new sort of markedly contrasting interaction--preferably re-parenting with an empathic therapist--needs to be internalized and developed. family systems work in concert, and that's where an outsider, a good therapist, is of immeasurable worth. if you've got two such parents, it's likely your personality has tell-tale wreckage, and you'll have all the more need for real human intervention to heal and integrate. that's always the bitch: these are generational problems passed down through families--it's true, your parents are probably victims, too--, and though you may have been the one to suffer, still, most likely, quite unconsciously, you in turn will make others suffer as well. this book recognizes and treads gently toward this truth. i find the book has pretty good evaluative materials as well as some good strategies for dealing with these people, and it's one of the better books that targets this particular problem. still, as at least one other reviewer said, sometimes you must just leave--leave! these people are toxic, it's heartbreaking, but your survival is at issue. that's when choosing to work with a caring therapist would be of the utmost benefit. i speak from experience. it can be a long but rewarding road. approach it with humility.

As the once scapegoated daughter of a narcissistic mother this book helped extremely in understanding my past and helping me to gain freedom from the shackles of a dysfunctional and toxic family. My husband is also reading it and gaining insights into his past relationship with his mother who is also rather self-absorbed. You can come to a place of peace if you search for answers and ask for help from professionals (check them out and make sure they are empathetic and not narcissistic themselves!) when you find yourself stuck.

John Coffee is the Adolf A. Berle Professor of Law. Listed by the National Law Journal as one of 'The 100 Most Influential Lawyers in the United States', he is a leading international authority on business and the law, corporate governance, and security regulation, and has served on a wide range of corporate and governmental advisory boards. His previous publications include Cases and Materials on Securities Regulations (with Seligman, 9th ed. 2003), Knights, Raiders, and Targets: The Impact of Hostile Takeover (with Lowenstein and Rose-Ackerman, 1988), Cases and Materials on Corporations (with Choper and Gilson, 6th ed. 2004), and Business Organization and Finance: Legal and Economic Principles (with Kelin, 9th ed. 2004).

Timely for 2008 Elections

The book's timing could hardly be better, since substantive reform only seems to occur with a crisis. Implosion of the savings and Loan Industry brought us the Federal Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act of 1989. Accounting scandals at Enron, WorldCom, etc. brought us the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 (Sarbanes Oxley). The subprime debacle is likely to bring significant reform as well.

It would be great if those advising Presidential candidates would consult Gatekeepers in preparing such proposals. Coffee focuses on auditors, attorneys, securities analysts and credit-rating agencies who inform and advise corporate managers, boards and shareholders. After a brief introduction explaining the failure of gatekeepers and a comparative overview of their roles internationally, Coffee devotes a chapter to each of the four groups. He typically provides an informative history, a review of current issues such as conflicts of interests, and an evaluation. He wraps up the book with a thematic discussion of what's gone wrong and how it might be fixed.

In general, gatekeepers act as "reputational intermediaries" by verifying corporate statements to investors. When trusted and successful, this lowers the cost of capital. However, as Coffee notes, "Watchdogs hired by those they are to watch typically turn into pets, not guardians," especially in the euphoric environment typified by stock or housing bubbles, when the public is typically lulled into complacency.

As management incentives were aligned with shareholders through options, income smoothing gave way to robbing the future for earnings that could be recognized immediately. Coffee explains how Enron's audit committee was blinded by professional advisers who fed it only the information senior management wanted them to have. Auditors were retrained and incentivized to sell consulting services. He explains why fund managers and gatekeepers tend to herd and why, until four days before Enron declared bankruptcy, its debt was rated "investment grade.' Only those with a financial self-interest, the short-sellers, searched beyond the surface and predicted Enron's accounting restatements. At WorldCom, "the limited due diligence that was conducted appears to have been constrained by the need not to offend the client" and the actual fraud was detected by the firm's internal auditors.

Coffee helps the reader see from a different perspective. For example, while some studies have found that audit firms with high consulting revenues were more likely to acquiesce to questionable earnings management, others found no such correlation. Coffee points out that instead of looking what is already in hand, we should look to possibilities. "The real conflict lies not in the actual receipt of high fees, but in their expected receipt." That explains why audits became a "loss leader" to obtain consulting services.

Similarly, disclosure of conflicts of interests often does not lead to expected results. Social psychologists find those on the receiving end often let down their guard, thinking because conflicts were disclosed they are being dealt with fairly. However, the conflicted party often feels that, having made the disclosure, they are now free to pursue their own interests aggressively. Gatekeepers is filled with such insights.

The major problem is that gatekeepers have come to view corporate managers, not shareowners, as their principals. Their livelihood depends on being viewed as flexible, problem-solving and cooperative, rather than rigorous or principled. "If left to their own devices and subjected to a significant threat of private litigation, professionals will respond by defining GAAP and auditing standards in their own interest, rather than that of investors." "Absent a litigation threat, professionals acquiesce in dubious and risky practices that their 'client' wants; but once subjected to an adequate litigation threat, professionals insist upon narrow duties, hopelessly specific safe harbors and a rule-base system that often seems devoid of meaningful principles."

According to Coffee, "The challenge for the regulator is not to take discretion out of the system, but to preserve and expand it. But discretion must be accorded to the gatekeeper, not the client (whereas present-day GAAP does the reverse)." The gatekeeper must assess not simply whether GAAP contains a rule authorizing a given treatment, but whether discretion so exercised is reasonable. Pressure to reform must come from regulators, investors and the young that the profession hopes to recruit who would find that greater discretion enhances the professions' image in their own eyes and those of the public.

Some of Coffee's more interesting recommendations, at least as I read them:

* Break-up the major accounting firms to provide more competition.
* Establish an intermediary that receives payment from the issuer but then selects the analyst based on objective criteria, such as their record of predictions.
* Restore "aiding and abetting" liability for professionals instead of de facto immunity for knowingly or recklessly participating in fraud.
*Formalize the role of "disclosure counsel" by requiring audit committees to retain them to investigate and test corporate disclosures on an on-going basis.

How the gatekeeping professions came to be and why the let us down

John C. Coffee Jr. takes an interesting look at the role the gatekeeping professions failed us in the major scandals at Enron, WorldCom, Parmalat and many others. These professions are accounting (auditing), attorneys, the credit rating agencies, and securities analysts. He provides us with a history of how each of these professions came into being, how they became gatekeepers in protecting the public by providing reliable information over many decades. However, things changed over time and he shows us how it happened. While it was different for each, the primary source was a change in incentives. While I can't recount everything in these short comments, you will see how the change in compensating CEOs from pay to equity and the expansion of auditing firms into more profitable consulting services changed auditing. The rise of the in-house legal counsel also changed the role of the legal advice corporations sought, received, and used. Rating agencies probably suffered by the lack of competition and a kind of groupthink. Securities analysts were conflicted by who paid for their advice and the impact negative ratings would have on their firm's customers and their own industry standing.

I think this is a useful and informative book.

A clear-eyed view on how to fix corporate gatekeeping

Although everyone may be fascinated by the corporate scandals of the past decade, figuring out how to make sure they don't happen again is what's really important. John C. Coffee Jr. shows how the professions of accounting, law, ratings and securities analysis let investors and consumers down. He is not interested in assigning blame but rather in demonstrating how changing corporate cultures, conflicts of interest, diminishing competition and declining professional standards combined to leave the public vulnerable. After explaining who the gatekeepers are, what their duties were in the past and what they do now, Coffee provides valuable recommendations for creating a viable gatekeeping function for the future. His ideas are sensible and he is modest, admitting that they are not complete or perfect. His writing about this complex subject is surprisingly clear, and his ability to illustrate his points with cogent examples from the headlines makes for an interesting read. getAbstract recommends this book to executives, board members and others with a stake in good corporate governance.

Great product, not so great delivery

Of course the book itself is a god send, but I'm going to focus on how the product was received. It arrived on time which was wonderful! Love it when that happens. Upon opening the first thing I noticed was that the bottom left corner was bent, causing the spine to rip just a little bit. I'm going to assume that that is due to the handling of the packaging. In which case, it would have been nice if the book arrived in it's packaging plus inside a box, I think that would have prevented the denting. The only other issue I had was that on the top there was a red line which looked like it was caused by a crayon. So, overall it's not the worst that could have happened, but being that it was supposed to be brand new it could have been better.

This book in my opinion contains everything you wanna know about animation.
As much as you can take from it you can make good animation and develope it gradually to be the best because it's the essence of a great animator's experience who is fond of animation.
