Ten Little Indians / And Then There Were None

There is a classic murder mystery story known as "the locked room mystery". Someone is found murdered in a room locked from the inside. No one could have left the room! How did it happen? In this story the locked room is an island where no one can enter or leave. The ten people on this island are murdered one by one. An old nursery rhyme of "ten little Indians" provides a blueprint for the mysterious deaths. Logically, the last survivor would be the presumed murderer, by the process of elimination. But what if this assumption was wrong? It may not sound rational but this story makes it appear so.

Ten people are invited or hired to visit Indian Island off the coast of Devon. After a good meal there is a recorded voice that accuses them of murder. The visitors begin dying off in the manner of that nursery rhyme. After searching the island they realize the murderer is one of the guests! Knowing this does not prevent more deaths. This story keeps your interest until the very end. Scotland Yard cannot figure out the solution until a message was found in a bottle at sea. The movie version modified and enhanced this story. No plan is ever perfect because of the many things that can happen.

This is an example of the classic English murder mystery. The murder exists to provide an intellectual puzzle to entertain the reader. The participants are mostly the middle-class, not average people. The scene is in a large house owned by a rich man. Raymond Chandler pointed out the differences in his essay "The Simple Art of Murder". Most murders occur because of lust or greed, to get it or to keep it. Chandler commented on the highly artificial murder plots which multiply clues that experienced detectives would see through. I found a clue in Chapter IX (but I had seen the movie decades ago).

Chapter XI references one locked room mystery in America. An old gentleman and his wife were killed with an axe. The maid couldn't have done it; the respectable middle-aged daughter was acquitted. No other explanation was ever found. Who killed them? [Arnold Brown's book explains it was done by someone who was kept hidden.]

The First and Last Book You'll Ever Need on Herbs

Look no further, this book will give you everything you ever wanted to know and more about herbs. The only thing else you might want is a more elaborate book on herb garden design...but don't be dismayed the section on herb garden design is very complete and inspiring.
ACTUALLY TELLS YOU HOW TO USE THEM! My wife and I love to use herbs particularly culinary, tea, and medicinal. This was the only book we came across that had detailed and useful information that was easily understood on how to use herbs in practical ways.
The book covers garden design, making herbal decorations, use in the kitchen with many recipes, household uses of herbs, beauty care use of herbs, essential oils, health uses of herbs, cultivation and harvesting of herbs and a very complete index of over 100 herbs. The herbal index is great. It contains full color photographs of the foliage, flowers, seed, dried leaves, and roots as applicable to each herb. A short history is given along with cultivation, harvest information, and uses (including what parts for what use).
It has a nice section on making potpourri. The beauty use section is complete with recipes. The table of essential oils is very complete and useful. The health section describes different general preparation techniques and an A-Z guide of ailments with accompanying herbal remedies. The herb cultivating section is complete and useful.
The title says it all, get this book and you will learn something new about herbs every time you pick it up. We reference it all the time. It is invaluable to any gardening or health library.

Absolutely EVERYTHING you need from an herb book!

You truly could not ask for a more complete reference on growing and using herbs. Lesley Bremness' book, beautifully illustrated throughout with sumptuous color photographs, is the first book I turn to for all my herb-related questions, whether they relate to garden planning, how tall a particular herb will grow, or an herbal remedy for dry skin. She provides extensive, well-organized, easy-to-read information on the cultivation and uses of perhaps 100 herbs, going well beyond the "usual suspects" to include such herbs as Elecampane, Melilot, and Houseleek.
One of the best aspects of the book is its 100+ page "Herbal Index." A full page (sometimes two) is dedicated to each variety, with good-sized color photos depicting the stem, leaf, seed, flower, root, dried flowers, dried leaves, crushed roots, other varieties, etc. A small photo tops of the growing plant tops a sidebar. This approach makes herb identification much easier than the books that rely on the garden glam shots where the herb looks gorgeous but its particulars can be difficult to see. Each herb page begins with a description of any lore historically ascribed to the plan and perhaps the origins of its name. For instance, the Borage description notes that the Old Masters often used the "beautiful pure blue" flowers to paint the Madonna's robe.
The sidebars in the Herbal Index pack an amazing amount of information into a relatively small amount of space: Details about cultivation, including soil and sunlight preferences, harvesting and preservation, and the decorative, culinary, household, cosmetic, and medicinal uses of its various parts. More details on the uses can be found in the "Using Herbs" sections.
Interspersed in the Herbal Index are certain theme sections depicting a handful of herbs grown for flowers or foliage and salad herbs, for instance.
The one drawback to the Herbal Index, as other reviewers have noted, is its arrangement by Latin name, rather than common name. Since the common name appears in good-sized print, flipping through to find what you're looking for isn't burdensome. Resorting to the thorough index at the end is another option.
This drawback is more than made up for by the thorough information in the Herbal Index and the 100 pages of well-illustrated uses for herbs. Here, the ideas go well beyond the usual recipes for meals and potpourri. The Herbal Decorations chapter includes lovely photographs of nosegays annotated with the Victorian language of flowers meanings, herbal garlands, herbal wreaths, and herbal table decorations. The culinary section features recipes for herbs the average person doesn't think to cook with, such as lovage soup and a marigold glaze for ham. The Herbs for the Household chapter discusses natural ways to deter pests using herbs, a marjoram-based furniture wax, horsetail "scouring pads," plus instructions for herbal dyes, herbal papers, scented ink, herbal toys, and a perfumed box. A variety of soaps, facial cleansers, bath additives, facial steams, floral waters and hair rinses appear in the Herbs for Beauty chapter. The Herbs for Health organizes medicinal uses of herbs alphabetically by ailment.
The book begins with a section on herb garden design. Among the themes illustrated are plans for a moonlight garden, a delightful circular children's garden, a Chinese garden, and an Egyptian-style paradise garden. Bremness also provides plans for gardens ranging in size from containers on a patio to a small corner of a yard to a large all-purpose garden (which seems to truly have a bit of everything). The planning section is the one place in the book where Bremness relies on some finely detailed color pencil drawings rather than photographs, although she still mixes in a delectable array of inspiring color photos.
"The Complete Book of Herbs" is a resource that herb gardeners, whether novice or experienced, will turn to again and again. I continue to find it as useful today as when I started my first garden some seven years ago. Treat yourself to the hardback edition if you can find it and afford it. It's well worth the investment.

Terrific reference material

Growing one's herbs is satisfying but using them completes the cycle. If you've ever wondered what to do with all the herbs you've managed to put in your garden over the years this book can help you. If you are just starting out with herbs this book can get you going properly. Not only does it have recipes but it has some ideas that I never could have imagined let alone used. The bulk of the book is dedicated to the herbal index which is extremely helpful. Each illustrated herb is broken down and expalined simply as to it's use, from root to leaves. The only problem I found with this section is that it is organized by their botanical names, which unless you're so inclined is difficult to find quickly. This is a minor problem that is remedied by the oversized common name, which of course is not alphabetized but more recognizable. A page is dedicated to over 100 of the most common herbs used. It tells you how to cultivate the individual herb and it's uses, which includes the medicinal use. Even if I don't use all the herbs or have them growing in my garden it is fascinating to know the historical and contemporary use of herbs. This book is a constant learning experience that can be read over and over. A perfect garden companion for that break under a tree. The knowledge can prove to be invaluable. Even such common herbs as Thyme can present posssibly new insights into it's benefits. Have trouble sleeping? The leaves of Thyme can help insomnia as well as stimulate the production of white corpusules to resist infection amongst it's many other attributes. There is much more information than I need here but there is something for everyone, from herbal dyes, to baths and massages and to the ever popular potpourri. This is, as the title suggests, the complete book on herbs. A great book for the kichen or to help you plan your herb garden, this book has as many uses as the author presents uses for the herbs.

About the Author
Tomie dePaola (pronounced Tommy da-POW-la) is best known for his books for children. He's been published for 40 years and has written and/or illustrated over 200 books, including 26 Fairmount Avenue, Strega Nona, and Meet the Barkers. Tomie dePaola and his work have been recognized with the Caldecott Honor Award, the Newbery Honor Award and the New Hampshire Governor's Arts Award of Living Treasure. He lives in New London, New Hampshire with his new Airedale dog, Brontë.

CLEMENT C. MOORE (1779-1863) is credited with writing the classic Christmas verse in 1822, as a gift to his family. First published in 1848, his beloved poem has brightened the holiday season ever since.

Old fashioned and charming

As soon as December rolled around, I knew I had to find a good illustrated copy of "The Night Before Christmas" to share with my 15-month-old son. I've always loved the lilt and old fashioned charm of this poem, and the way it adds to the aura of the season.

This was just what I was looking for. Tomie de Paola's illustrations match the tone of the poem perfectly: old fashioned and charming. The setting is New England during the 1840s. Each illustration is rich with quaint details, and each page is bordered with patterns from old timey quilts. It's a beautiful book and a holiday favorite.

Dr. Kent Gustavson is a musician, professor, speaker, oft ghostwriter & ne' er-do-well. He is proficient in traditional instruments such as the banjo, mandolin, upright bass and guitar, but was trained as a classical composer in New York. He has interviewed hundreds of award-winning authors & musicians for his own radio show Sound Authors, and has been featured on National Public Radio s All Songs Considered.

Once you start, it's awful hard to put down!

When I received this book in the mail, I knew that I wanted to read the whole thing. But I had an awfully busy day planned. Once I got started reading, however, it became obvious that a lot of stuff was gonna get procrastinated 'til next day. At 2AM, I was done... but a lot of lingering emotions from this fascinating, incredibly deeply researched look keep resonating... and will for a long time.

Kent's book is an extremely moving and revealing look at one of the most fascinating and influential pickers in American folklore. Most folks who know anything about American roots music know Doc's name, and many of these folks know a good deal about Doc's remarkable musical career over the last 45+ years. But very, very few people know the man and his astonishing story in the detail that this book provides.

It's a quintessentially American story, and I'm extraordinarily grateful to Kent for providing us with it!

A Landmark Biography

In "Blind But Now I See," Kent Gustafson has written a landmark biography of Doc Watson, one of the most important figures in 20th century American folk music. Drawing from interviews of over fifty luminaries such as Mike Seeger, Jack Lawrence, and Maria Muldaur, the author paints a vivid portrait of Doc Watson, the man and his roots, his career, his virtuosic musicianship, his complex relationship with his son Merle, and his inestimable influence on generations of musicians.

For me, as a lifelong fan and early student of Doc Watson's music, "Blind But Now I See" offers many revelations, but two stand out: The first is Ralph Rintzler's role in Doc's early career. I knew the stories about Rintzler "discovering" Doc and persuading him to put down his electric guitar, but I had no idea how instrumental he was in shaping Doc's image and repertoire. I now understand that Rintzler was the man who, in many ways, created the persona that I myself bought into when I was a kid in the 60s. Not that Doc wasn't all the things he presented, he was just a whole lot more which Rintzler insisted he keep under wraps.

The other revelation for me was Doc's son Merle who accompanied him for nearly twenty years and died an untimely death. The Merle I knew sat silently on stage while his dad shined in the spotlight. However, the book shows us Merle as Doc's businessman; his driver, navigator, and guide; his liaison to the younger generation; Merle as Doc's eyes and best friend. Almost unanimously, those who knew him spoke of him as a sweet, gentle and generous soul. Merle was talented, intelligent, savvy, and in the end a tragic figure who possibly carried more of a burden than he could bear.

Kent Gustafson has written a biography that is insightful and revealing. "Blind But Now I See," gives us Doc Watson the human being: a simple yet complex man who has lived a life of tragedy and triumph.

A Great Book About Doc

Did you know that Doc Watson's father made Doc's first banjo from the hide of his grandma's 16 year-old cat? Did you know that Doc Watson can tell you how many fenceposts he's passed just by the echo of the rustling grass as he walks through it?

Doc Watson's music touches me deeply. It is a genuine and integral expression of his life and who he is. This anecdotal biography helps me to appreciate Doc's music a lot more. These fascinating stories describe a life lived with integrity, honesty, grit and love. Though these stories are spun as simply as a pair of homemade pants, when taken together, they resound with a harmony and beauty as rich as any of Doc's best gospel tracks.

American music is a complex organism. The mixture of genres and cultures evades our best efforts to form comprehensible little catagories. Doc Watson is a crossroads. His extraordinary breadth of exposure to and mastery of so many genres and traditions allows us to catch a glimpse of the big picture of American music. This exhaustively researched book, therefore, is not just the story of one Appalachian man, but a well-crafted lens through which we can see and better appreciate our musical heritage.

WHO IS THIS.

IS SHE PARTLY A ROBOT. SORT OF LIKE ME. OH, SHE SEEMS TO BE AN ARTIST TOO. ALSO LIKE ME.

DID SHE DRAW HERSELF?? I DON'T SEE HOW THAT'S POSSIBLE. CONSIDERING SHE IS FICTIONAL. AS WELL AS A GIRL. SOME OTHER VERY SKILLED DRAFTSMAN MUST HAVE DRAWN IT. BUT HOW DID HE MAKE IT LOOK LIKE SHE IS COMING OUT OF THE PAPER? WHEN I TURN THE BOOK. THE IMAGE STAYS FLAT. AND THE ILLUSION IS EXPOSED. I WONDER IF THE SORCERER OF THIS SO CALLED "MANGA" REVEALS THE NATURE OF HIS WIZARDRY INSIDE THE TOME.

A good introduction to the basics of Manga art style !

I Got my copy of this book thru amazon,And was really disapointed because they kept delaying the shipping date and had to wait over 2 weeks until it actually got shipped. However the book it-self offers quite alot of potential for learning to design and draw your own Manga charecters it covers many topics on both the realistic and the manga style such as the design of the eyes/Nose/Mouth , Also it was very helpful when it came to Head drawing from all angles in addition to that it also covers drawing the human figure . The only reason why i gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because all the charecters in the book look like from some 80's anime . And i am not that much into that style i love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style more it's modern and realistic .

If you liked the Boy in the Stripped Pajamas

If you liked the Boy in the Stripped Pajamas, you'll like this as well. Altho it's a young adult's book, I, at 72 liked it very much. The only problem I had with it was the kind of dialog that was used for the main character, a 7 to 13 year old for most of the book. I've never heard a kid that age use the language that was used in this book. I found it to advanced for his age.

I loved The Boy in the Striped Pajamas much more than this book. I feel the viewpoint in this book is from the 'other side of the fence.' The reader follows the life of a young boy living in a chaotic and powerful time. A series of events combined with living in the home of the architect of the most evil time in history shapes his character and behavior. That within itself is scary. It is also a reminder that who we believe we are and our values can be shaken to the core when power is an enticement. It is also a reminder that deeds done cannot be undone. It is a good easy read.

The Boy at the Top of the Mountain by John Boyne is a compelling read about the dangers of wanting or having power. Unquestionably, it is well written and hard to put down. I would have preferred author's notes to include what is factually based in this historical fiction rendering this slice of time in Germany under Hitler.
