Design Process: A Primer for Architectural and Interior Design (Architecture), by Sam F. Miller

Design Process A Primer for Architectural and Inerior Designers Sam F. Miller, AIA First, you’ll learn how to look at building components and materials inside and out, evaluating: structural materials; heating, electrical, and plumbing systems; aesthetics and light; the site; movement of people and traffic; and ecological considerations. Then, you’ll learn why research is important and why you need to be familiar with particular building types—hospitals, museums, manufacturing facilities, airports, libraries, office buildings, and mixed-use structures—before you even think about designing. And you’ll take a look at building codes and local zoning ordinances. After a thorough grounding in the physical, you’ll meet that all-important client and learn how to find out what they really want as you develop a list of goals, problems to be solved, and design requirements. You’ll learn how to brainstorm with the client and discover why it’s important to involve the client in the design process from beginning to end. Next, you’ll learn how to give shape to your ideas as you explore sketching and techniques for model building; then you’ll refine your design, building on the synergism of sketching and modeling. You’ll even learn how to surmount those inevitable dead ends with tried-and-true techniques from the pros. Finally, you’ll learn how to package the results of your labors in a professional presentation as Miller discusses the merits and drawbacks of various presentation methods. Plus, the author includes candid interviews with some of the field’s most respected designers: R. Scott Johnson, Bart Prince, and Steve Badanes, among others, to give you the perspectives of working professionals at different levels. Whether you’re a novice in the classroom or an old hand with a celebrated clientele, you’ll get a fresh look at the elusive design process in this real-world primer.

From Library Journal
This work on architectural design and creativity targets both students and practitioners, clearly, albeit pedantically, articulating each phase of the design process. The first part introduces basic concepts and objective components of the design process. The next part deals with the subjective visualization inherent in sketching, modeling, and reworking. Potentially the most interesting, the third part consists of interviews with eight U.S. architects, including Steve Badanes, R. Scott Johnson, and Bart Prince. Unfortunately, the interviews, while far-ranging, tend to meander. Three hundred sketches and illustrations reinforce the book's practical, how-to orientation. A satisfactory but not essential choice for college and architecture and design libraries.

I should have read this book before going in to college!
By Rodrigo Thomé Cauduro
I must say this is exactly the kind of book i've been looking for, since I entered architecture school I have been trying to find literature for a good design process applied to architecture. The book covers the architectural design process from start to finish with many helpfull insights into the various stages of the complex design process involved in building. In my opinion, it is a vaery complete book, not just talking about building aspects, but client relationships, cost concerns, while at the same time realizing the diference of the academic and work reality. A must buy in my opinion.

I need to say that there are some good things in this book and some people can benefit ...
By Amazon Customer
*Edit - I am a bit slow to do it, but I would like to say that I received good correspondence from the author and I was impressed with her responses. She is really trying to help us and research the best way to do it. So I am changing my review to 3 stars because while my criticism of the book is still valid, I feel like I was unfair about its strong points. So a more fair rating would be 3 stars.

First of all, I need to say that there are some good things in this book and some people can benefit from reading it. Also, Sabrina looks like a really nice girl who has been through a lot of pain and I'm sure she is genuinely trying to help. I'm sure Eric is trying the same, too.

With that said, I have to say that the advice in this book is not only not helpful, it can be dangerous at times. It's not that the authors are bad people. But before you start following what this book preaches, keep this in mind - Eric Charles is a big fan of Eckhart Tolle and a lot of his work is influenced by him. Living in the moment, labels don't matter, you need to enjoy the relationship as it unfolds... If you are a die-hard fan of Tolle, then nothing I say will change your mind and you will love the advice in this book. But if you happen to think differently and are open to the possibility that Tolle's New Age movement is more like a cult, then pay attention.

This book is full of excuses for men. Now of course, men are not the enemy, but some men are definitely to be avoided. The book is quite dis-empowering to women - it can turn you into a coy girl waiting for the guy to commit instead of pursuing your own agenda in relationships. I know because that is what reading all their articles turned me into. Of course, I'm just one case, so maybe it will be a different experience for you. But what the book prescribes is not based on any data or research, but on opinion - opinion influenced by Eckhart Tolle's teachings. The most dangerous idea in this book is the idea that the real reason men cheat is because they don't feel like winners. I can understand why Sabrina believes that - Eric cheated on her and he rationalized it this way. Now he wrote a book together with her and of course that he doesn't think that men cheat because they are as*holes - that would mean calling himself an as*hole. Also, it feels good for us women to have a feeling of control - as long as I make him feel like a winner, he will not cheat. However, research shows that the main reason men cheat is because they can. They don't need to have anything missing in the relationship in order to cheat. Do some men cheat because they are unappreciated? Sure. Is this the main reason men cheat? Science says no. People cheat because of their own bad character, especially if it happens more than once. Men's narcissism is a great predictor of cheating and narcissists surely feel like winners!

Another dangerous idea - men are not trying to hurt you. While it's true that most people are not trying to hurt you, some definitely are. And then there are some others who are not trying to hurt you but see you as nothing but an object to use and dispose of. And then there are those who do see you as a human being but will throw you under the bus if it suits them. Some people just can't be trusted and shouldn't be trusted, especially if you are giving them your body. The book doesn't warn you about such guys (and girls, of course). They can hurt you so much that you have no idea what hit you. And no, they are not necessarily sociopaths, there are many untrustworthy people who are not sociopaths but they are still not to be trusted. And you are more likely to meet such men because they are more attractive and more promiscuous. If a girl reads this book, and then goes and meets a good guy, this will not be that big of a problem. But if she happens to meet an untrustworthy guy (and she is likely to, because such guys try to hook up with as many women as possible, giving all men a bad name), then her trying to be understanding with him will backfire spectacularly. But this book makes it seem like it's all her fault for not giving him enough freedom. This may not be the intention of the authors but this is the message that comes across. If you are dealing with an as*hole who's breaking your heart, someone cheating on you, lying to you, playing with you, using you, a much better resource is "Character Disturbance: the phenomenon of our age" by Dr. George Simon. It is also a good resource if you want to avoid getting hurt by getting involved with the wrong people in any type of relationship. Contrary to what you might think after reading Sabrina's book, a guy not wanting to commit is not your biggest worry.

The way they talk about sex in this book is also dangerous. The book makes it seem like there is something wrong with a woman feeling attached after having sex. The solution they offer? Don't get attached. Eric even describes one incident when he lost interest after having sex with a woman because she became too clingy. Well, good rationalization, but what about the Coolidge effect? Maybe that's a more plausible explanation. And wouldn't a better course of action for this poor girl have been something like "Don't have sex with him before he commits". This would have prevented him from losing interest in her. But why would Eric recommend such an approach? He wouldn't. He likes his uncommitted sex. He doesn't know how much it hurts for a woman. So more rationalizations and zero science and facts. A much better advice is instead of trying to be unattached after sex (which only comes naturally to some women), just don't have sex before the guy is head over heels in love with you and has committed to you. But that would not fit well with Eckhart Tolle's philosophy about living in the moment.

The book also says that there is a way to communicate your worries to a man without nagging him... But never tells you what these ways are. So you are left wondering and feeling like you just didn't "get" it when in fact it was never explained. It gives no practical solutions, just some feel-good vague explanations. I don't see how this can change anything. If you are having a problem with guys not committing, I strongly recommend "Having Sex, Wanting Intimacy: Why Women Settle for One-Sided Relationships" by Dr. Jill P. Weber (you can check out her blog, too). And if you are just looking for a relationship, a great read could be "Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do" by Dr. Duana Welch - a very practical book based on scientific research.

Another problem with this book - it's true that men want appreciation and freedom, but... every single human does. These are basic psychological needs. And everyone who has studied persuasion knows that the best way to make someone comply with your agenda is to reinforce their freedom. This is not anything specific to men. And it doesn't mean you don't pursue your own agenda or influence men in other ways. It's just that forcing them is not an effective method to get what you want. And yes, you need to satisfy the basic emotional needs of your partner, but it's important to also make sure that he satisfies yours. This book keeps on telling women to ignore their own needs for connection and security and to be happy without satisfying them. This is just not possible.

If you are in a relationship and want to make it better, or just want to make all your relationships better, then I strongly recommend "Feeling good together" by Dr. David Burns. It is an amazing book that gives you practical advice on how to communicate and has helped me stop fighting with my boyfriend and solve other conflicts with other people. And it is based on solid evidence from scientific research. I hope this helps someone.

If I knew these 10 things when I was younger, I would not have been divorced.
By Amazon Customer
After I got divorced, I vowed to myself that I would not get married again before I dont understand the mind of a man, or the stuff men are made of. For the past nine years, I have devoured every book on relationships, am following relationship gurus such as David Wygant, ANM and a few others. As time past, I have realised and understood and began to practice the things Sabrina is talking about in this book, such as appreciating a man for who he is, and not what he can give you, for just enjoying the time spent with a man, without expections of a fairy tale love, as lets face it, we are after all living in the real world! And I have seen how men adores you, spoil you, make you feel like a princess, is eager to please and prefer to be in your company and never, never let me hang, in fact, they keep on coming back, just because I show respect and gets him being a man, and appreciating his male energy. I can assure you, Sabrina`s advice is the real thing, and if only we were brought up with this understanding, instead of the Hollywood love stories, there would be less drama in relationships. Im happy that finally, one person manage to put the truth about how great a man is, with just a bit of appreciation and understanding from a woman. Its all in one book, you do not need to look any further if you want to know what to do to have the loving attention and adoration of a man. DONT JUST READ IT, CHANGE YOUR MINDSET AND LIVE IT TRULY EVERYDAY, AND YOU WILL BE A HAPPY WOMAN NEXT TO A GREAT MAN! Sabrina and Eric, you guys are doing some amazing work here, and the world will become a better place due to this very insightful work you are doing through ANM, thank you for sharing your life experiences and for having the determination to work so diligently on this every day! YOU ARE THE BEST of ALL THE REST!

Capture this book!
By Jessica R
I first was turned onto “A New Mode” (the original website) when I found myself waist deep of what I now call “Silly Dating Books”. Books that distorted my perception. Books that gave me rules & not principles. My mindset went from being very optimistic and clear, to impulsively overthinking every male movement. I questioned myself, my personality, my looks, & listened to too many friends. I was confused as ever. (And I can only imagine how confused guys were).

In this empowering piece of literature, the author Sabrina Alexis (and co-author Eric Charles) lay down a beautiful foundation of how to be true to yourself while evoking what you want in a straightforward approach. There is a self improvement feel throughout the book that shows you how to transform & have a healthy mindset that we as women seem to lose while dating. It is a reference that helps you grasp the bigger picture. She is raw but refined, & writes with sincerity. You really feel she was in your stilettos in every occurrence.

Quite honestly, I was bummed at first when I saw there was no hard copy. (I’m a tangible person that likes to keep technology to a minimum). But, I quickly found out that having a hard copy couldn’t of had the magical links to previously published articles. It’s a lot of fun. (He’s Just Not That Into You; Just Turn Lesbian surely did not have that feature).

Just the texting section alone is gold. I cannot wait to recommend to my next girlfriend that asks me, “Jess, he just stopped texting. What do I do?!” (I give it 10 more minutes until this book has another sale ;)

Highly recommend!

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey

An international bestseller and the basis for the hugely successful film, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of the defining works of the 1960s.

In this classic novel, Ken Kesey’s hero is Randle Patrick McMurphy, a boisterous, brawling, fun-loving rebel who swaggers into the world of a mental hospital and takes over. A lusty, life-affirming fighter, McMurphy rallies the other patients around him by challenging the dictatorship of Nurse Ratched. He promotes gambling in the ward, smuggles in wine and women, and openly defies the rules at every turn. But this defiance, which starts as a sport, soon develops into a grim struggle, an all-out war between two relentless opponents: Nurse Ratched, backed by the full power of authority, and McMurphy, who has only his own indomitable will. What happens when Nurse Ratched uses her ultimate weapon against McMurphy provides the story’s shocking climax.

From Library Journal
Kesey's new introduction to this anniversary edition could very well be the last thing he worked on before shuffling off this mortal coil in 2001. Additionally, 25 sketches he drew while working at a mental institution in the 1950s, the inspiration for the novel, are littered throughout. Critics are divided on the meaning of the book: Is it a tale of good vs. evil, sanity over insanity, or humankind trying to overcome repression amid chaos? Whichever, it is a great read.

Review
"A glittering parable of good and evil." —The New York Times Book Review

"A roar of protest against middlebrow society’s Rules and the Rulers who enforce them." —Time

From the Inside Flap
An international bestseller, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest defined the 1960s era of ever-widening perspectives and ominous repressive forces. Full of mischief, insight, and pathos, Kesey's powerful story of a mental ward and its inhabitants probes the meaning of madness, often turning conventional notions of sanity and insanity on their heads.

The tale is chronicled by the seemingly mute Indian patient, Chief Bromden; its hero is Randle Patrick McMurphy, the boisterous, brawling, fun-loving rebel who encourages gambling, drinking, and sex in the ward, and rallies the other patients around him by challenging the dictatorial rule of Big Nurse. McMurphy's defiance -- which begins as a sport -- develops into a grim struggle with the awesome power of the "Combine", concluding with shattering, tragic results. In its unforgettable portrait of a man teaching the value of self-reliance and laughter destroyed by forces of hatred and fear, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a classic parable that has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time.

Fabulous and Inspirational
By Hassan Galadari
This novel officially ends the 4-book reading that I had set forth to get my teeth into this summer. I must say, that it truly stands out from anything I had read before it, be it this summer or anytime for that matter. Ken Kesey weaves a tale that is smart, witty, sometimes insane and ultimately tragic. Though the setting is mainly in a mental asylum somewhere in Oregon, this story has a universal appeal to it that can be felt by anyone, anwhere in this world.
R.P. McMurphy is a sane man that, due to a brush with the law, opts for being committed in a mental asylum rather than be incarcerated with hard labor. Upon his entry in the secluded world of the asylum, he strips all the barriers formed and starts laying his own rules, in his own way. This leads to problems with the head honcho of the place. A big, gruesome, and menacingly evil Nurse Ratched, dubbed Big Nurse for her huge frame and even huger bosom. The rollercoaster, that patient McMurphy takes the inmates through, finally leads them to realize the ultimate goal. That man, no matter the situation, can always hold his destiny in his hands. This knowledge, achieved in the end, does not come without a price.
Set in the late 60s, early 70s, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a gem of modern literary works that came out at the time. It brought out a wonderfully-made movie, starring Jack Nicholson as McMurphy. The role defined him as an actor to be reckoned with. Though the mavie is seen through the eyes of McMurphy, the novel's perspective looks at things through the eyes of a big half white, half Native American inmate, that acts deaf and dumb in front of the asylum's staff. The narrative, because it is through the eyes of a mental patient, can at times be truly insane. That's where the fun really lies. Kesey works his magic in making us feel the insanity and despair of the patients. He can be funny, in a laugh out loud kind of fashion. He can also be tragic, when you realize what the inmates go through each passing day. The novel is a definitive treatment of the age old abode of individual versus establishment.
This is a very human story, with a lot of suffering and exploration of man's insecurities. It has become a classic that some schools have even recommended as part of their curriculum. Through all the ups and downs of the story, I was, forever inspired and ultimately liberated in mind to finally realize that you can take away a man's life, but never his freedom. The book receives my highest recommendation.

Plumb Crazy
By Niles Jacobsen
Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Although the story takes place mainly in a mental hospital, its ramifications can be felt in all of the broader society. The struggles depicted in the various characters, both internally and inter-personally, will give the reader pause and perhaps change your perception on life.

The story at its core encompasses the struggle between the individual (portrayed by Randall McMurphy) and the establishment (Portrayed by nurse Ratched.) It is told through the eyes of the schizophrenic half-Indian known as Chief Bromden. Bromden has pretended to be deaf and dumb for so long that everyone takes this fact for granted. It also allows him to overhear comments from the staff that others would not. The Chief is an interesting choice as narrator, and at times it seemed like he was rambling on about nothing. Unreliable narrators can be a touchy thing, but Kesey is able to navigate his way through the Chief's mind, and in time we find his ramblings have a purpose. He views the establishment as a machine, which he refers to as "the combine." He speaks of fog machines, wires in the walls, and robotic people, and views them as part of the combine. Even the name of the nurse, Ratched, sounds almost like "ratchet," which is a common tool. The Chief sees the struggle between the Big Nurse, as he calls Ratched, and McMurphy, and even though he has a sense right away that McMurphy is different, Bromden doesn't hold out much hope. After all, the combine is a massive machine and the Chief knows what it did to him. Bromden tells McMurphy he "used to be big," but not any more. The Chief's mother, a white woman from town, along with the government, broke down both he and his father and became bigger than both of them put together.

The antagonist is Ratched, an ex-army nurse who rules the ward with an iron fist. She preys on the weaknesses of the patients and attacks them in those areas. She is all about control and power, and over her long career has devised many ways of projecting this with a cold, machine-like efficiency. Ratched has hand picked her staff based on their cruelty and submissiveness. The Chief calls her "The Big Nurse," which reminds me of Orwell's Big Brother, and mentions early on that "The Big Nurse tends to get real put out if something keeps her outfit from running like a smooth, accurate, precision-made machine" (pg 24). Indeed the Chief sees her as a machine, part of the combine who's purpose is to make others small. Ratched represents the oppressive nature and de-humanization present in modern society.

And then there is Randle McMurphy. Sent to the ward from a work farm (because it's "easier" time), McMurphy comes in loud and confident. His singing and laughter are something new for the patients so used to suppressing their emotions. And he is definitely not the kind of patient the mechanical and repressive Nurse Ratched wants. It only takes McMurphy one group session to see Ratched's method of exposing the patient's weakest areas and pecking them into submission. Harding, the subject of the group meetings earlier frenzy, explains that it was all therapeutic. McMurphy, however, gives Harding his perception: "what she is is a ball-cutter. I've seen a thousand of 'em...people who try to make you weak so they can get you to...live like they want you to. And the best way to do this...is to weaken you by gettin' you where it hurts the worst" (pg 56). So McMurphy, ever the gambling man, makes a bet with his fellow patients that he would be able to make Ratched lose her composure, and he accomplished this by using her own tactics against her. As he pulls Bromden and the others out of the "fog" and makes them big again, McMurphy unwittingly becomes the savior of his fellow patients. It did not go un-noticed that the electroshock table was cross-shaped with the patient restrained by the wrists and feet and a "crown" placed over his head. When McMurphy rips Nurse Ratched's tightly starched uniform and exposes her breasts, he is symbolically exposing her hypocrisy and breaking the power she had once wielded over the patients. Chief Bromden's final act of mercy cemented Nurse Ratched's fall as well as giving McMurphy the dignity that he had earned.

Perhaps the largest piece of advice I pulled from this novel is to never let anyone or anything take your individuality. Society in general would like to have everyone fit into the same mold because then the people are easier to predict and control. However, we all need a McMurphy in our lives to show us that we can still be individuals and fit into society. And when The Combine tries to weaken you and make you conform, just throw your head back and laugh like McMurphy, "because he knows you have laugh at the things that hurt you just to keep yourself in balance, just to keep the world from running you plumb crazy" (pg 233).

Simply Divine
By Jeffrey Leach
Counterculture icon and author Ken Kesey (1935-2001) wrote his first novel, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," in 1960. The book was a response to the author's experiences testing mind-altering drugs for the federal government and his later tenure as a nurse's aide in the same facility. In the introduction to the novel, Robert Faggen places this seminal novel in its proper context, arguing that this book incorporates several themes of the 1950's: the Cold War, the plight of the Native Americans, the reliance on psychiatry as a cure all for social problems, and the vestigial remnants of McCarthyism. Even if you could care less about how Kesey's book fits into American cultural history, you could hardly fail to miss the overarching theme of his novel: the tensions between the individual and the state, between those trapped in an industrial society and those who wish to live in freedom. There is a film version of this book starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher that adequately captures Kesey's stark visions.
The author's tale takes place in a mental asylum at an unknown time. Perhaps this is because time has little importance to the inmates in the facility. The people in this particular ward of the hospital fall into categories of `acute' or `chronic,' depending on whether they have hope of recovery or are irrevocably ill. The days are full of drudgery, an endless round of medications interspersed with playing cards against the background of canned polka music. Everyday the acute patients meet for group therapy that really doubles as a McCarythyesque tattling session. The name of the game is acquiescence to the myriad rules and regulations of the institution. Those inmates who violate the rules earn a trip to the disturbed ward or a quick trip to the electroshock chamber. Repeated disobedience could lead to a lobotomy. Predictably, fear is the perpetual state in which most of the patients live. But with the appearance of a nonconformist named Randle McMurphy, fear starts to give way to a burgeoning hope that life will become better in this hospital.
The narrator of this story is Chief Bromden, a mixed blood Indian who is a patient in the ward. This man spends his days mopping and sweeping the floors while hearing and seeing everything that goes on around him. The Chief fears that something called the `Combine' controls the world. For him, the `Combine' is the machinery that fills the walls and floors of the hospital, constantly spying on and controlling the men in the ward. He believes that those who work in the asylum are actually full of cogs and gears, are part of this giant, controlling machine. Moreover, the staff and the patients believe that Bromden is a deaf mute. He isn't, but Kesey's choice of this Indian as the narrator of unfolding events is a stroke of brilliance. Since no one thinks the Chief can hear or speak, he becomes privy to every activity in the institution. The staff speaks freely around him because they feel they have nothing to worry about. His cleaning duties allow him full access to every area of the floor, including the room where the staff meets to discuss other inmates. You cannot help but like Bromden, and you quickly question whether his observations are truly the ramblings of a madman.
The central figure in Bromden's `Combine' theory is Nurse Ratched, sometimes referred to as `Big Nurse.' This seemingly grandmotherly woman personifies the Chief's fear of control and cold aloofness. Ratched runs the floor from her little glass booth, her hands on the levers of the machinery that controls the lights, the music, the group therapy sessions, and even most of the doctors. Her voice alone controls the destiny of the inmates. Ratched enforces the rules and regulations, and she decides who receives punishment or release. Big Nurse encourages stool pigeons and belittles the patients with implied threats and stony glares, often masked under an ersatz exterior of patience and cheerfulness. With the arrival of McMurphy, Ratched prepares for a battle of wills that by extension is a war between the individual and the state.
Randle McMurphy is a boisterous, tattooed, redheaded troublemaker ducking a sentence on a work farm by acting crazy. Right from the start, McMurphy undermines the rules and regulations of the hospital. He gambles for money, wonders the hall wearing nothing but towels, sings, and challenges Ratched's authority by going to the floor doctor to receive rule waivers. But far, far worse is McMurphy's effect on the other inmates in the institution. His breezy spirit and tenaciousness encourages others to demand changes in the daily routine. Randle is a subversive of the worst type, and Ratched will do anything in her power to slap down this upstart to her fascistic rule. The end of the story seems to mark a significant defeat for the concept of individualism, but if one reads closely it is apparent Kesey keeps the dream of freedom alive however ephemeral it may be.
Although I disagree strongly with Kesey's career as a counterculture mainstay, I loved this book. Everything about it is brilliant, from the characterization to the tight writing style. The Penguin edition even includes pencil sketches of people Kesey drew during his work as a nurse's aide. These haunting sketches add a special dimension to the text. Ultimately, the novel works because of its messages of freedom versus entrapment and the dangers of both conformity and nonconformity to the human soul. I recommend you run, not walk, to get this book.

this one's a gift
By Kindle Customer
I hope this isn't the last Blackthorn and Grim book, although if it is, this third book works well as a conclusion. It rounds off a good part of their journey so far and leaves them settled in well-earned safety, the esteem of their communities and deeply healed of much that seemed irreparably twisted and scarred. Marillier knows they'll never be the people they were before they were broken, but as she makes it clear that the people Grim and Blackthorn are learning to be have even more to offer others than they did before the darkness overtook them and tore them away from themselves. The book is beautifully written, of course, and wonderfully satisfying as well. I just do really hope Marillier keeps telling us their story.

Another great story
By inner dragon
This is another great addition to the Blackthorn and Grim saga. Marillier specializes in complex, creative retellings of tradional myths, and this follows that formula. There are two prior books in this series, but there is enough background provided that you don't need to have read the prior tales (although i would recommend them highly). This story develops the relationship, and the characters, while providing a mystery to solve. It is well written, the pace moves well, and the outcome is a satisfying conclusion to the series. The basis for the tale is also interesting, in that it isn't a well-known fable and thus, the discovery of the tale and its place in the book don't rob the suspense of the ending.

I really liked this book, but... (spoilers?)
By Kindle Customer
I wish it wasn't the end of the series. The ending just felt so rushed. I was not expecting the Blackthorn & Grim novels to be a trilogy, and the way the end of Den of Wolves reads makes it seem that maybe Juliet Marillier originally planned to write more books. The ending is so tidy. Most loose ends are tied up. Justice is served and true love prevails, which is great and all, but just not satisfying when it all happens in the last fifty pages or so of the book. Conmael has this potentially awesome backstory that's only hinted at, given only as a justification for why he's essentially a fairy godfather to Blackthorn. Mathuin's punishment is horrible, and horribly vague. I get that Marillier writes fairy tales, and most end in "happily ever after," but to be honest I was hoping that this would be more than that.

I love these characters and this world. I wish we could see more of it.

PW's starred review called this memoir, of a 13-year-old Hungarian Jewish girl's incarceration in Auschwitz, "an exceptional story, exceptionally well told." Ages 12-up.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 8^-12. In a graphic present-tense narrative, this Holocaust memoir describes what happens to a Jewish girl who is 13 when the Nazis invade Hungary in 1944. She tells of a year of roundups, transports, selections, camps, torture, forced labor, and shootings, then of liberation and the return of a few. For those who have read Leitner's stark The Big Lie (1992), this is a much more detailed account, with the same authority of a personal witness. Horrifying as her experience is, she doesn't dwell on the atrocities. There is hope here. Unlike many adult survivor stories, this does not show the victims losing their humanity. The teenager and her mother help each other survive; they save each other from the gas chambers. Even in the slaughter of the cattle trucks strafed by machine-gun fire, "words of comfort emerge from every corner." The occasional overwriting about "drowning in a morass of pain and helplessness" is unfortunate. The facts need no rhetoric. On every page they express her intimate experience. After the war, the teenager finds her brother, hears how her father died. She wonders whether she dare enjoy the luxury of being a girl, of "having hair." A final brief chronology of the Holocaust adds to the value of this title for curriculum use with older readers. Hazel Rochman

Review
Ages 12 and up will find this an intense autobiographical account of a 13-year-old's sudden introduction to war. When Nazis invaded her Hungarian home, Elli found herself shipped to a concentration camp, where she was selected for work. As one of the few teenage camp inmates, Elli recounts a chilling story of survival. -- Midwest Book Review

Very involving and compelling read
By Anyechka
If you've read a lot of books about the Shoah, sometimes it seems like they all start to sound the same, only with different names and locations, but most good memorable books and memoirs on the subject have things setting them apart. This book, for example, is the only one I can remember having read so far where the subject (Elli) went through the camps with her mother; all of the other books I've read so far have been about siblings or friends or cousins sticking together in the camps. Sadly, there aren't more books about the mother-daughter relationship in the camps because most of the girls who went there with their mothers were immediately separated from them.

Besides having the little-represented angle of how a mother and daughter supported and loved one another in the camps (particularly after Elli's mother has her injury), there are also other things in here making it a unique story. The family in this book is also smaller than most of the other families in books about the Shoah, with only Elli, her brother, their parents, and their aunt, as opposed to large families with several sisters or brothers. There are also many details about everything that happened to them in the various places they were in, instead of just giving vague descriptions of what they went through or just focusing on how they stuck together instead of dwelling on the specifics of what they went through. It's definite that Elli and her mother had their chances for survival improved because they were selected for the transport to the factory in Augsburg, where they got better food and treatment as opposed to being forced to do the type of things they did in Plaszow. However, since there are so many horrific details and specifics given, this wouldn't be the type of book for a younger reader, but rather a mature teenager. And I love books written in the present tense; it draws you right in and makes the action even more compelling, wondering what's going to happen next. Reading or writing in the past tense just doesn't have that same deep emotional impact.

Gripping and unforgettable!
By Z Hayes
I have read a lot of books about the holocaust, and I especially like to read memoirs written by survivors of the Holocaust. This is one such memoir that is compelling and heartbreaking in the descriptions of the horrors suffered by the writer and her family during the Holocaust. Initially, we witness the author's desire to be loved and praised by her mother, her ambition to be a poet, and her descriptions of simple, everyday life in her little village...later, we are led on a horrific journey beginning with the restrictions imposed upon the Jews in the village, the deportation of Elli's[ the author] father to a labor camp in Hungary, and finally Elli's own deportation together with her mother and brother to Auschwitz...their journey of terror doesn't end at Auschwitz for Elli finds herself and her mother constantly battling for survival under the most deplorable conditions, being forced to endure unimaginable suffering and degradation, being shunted from one concentration camp to another, and finally liberation. Elli's journey is one of horror, hope, faith and resilience, and truly inspiring.

A Thousand Memories
By RCM
As an avid reader of material regarding the Holocaust and WWII, I was delighted to find this book at a used book store. "I Have Lived A Thousand Years" offers an interesting perspective on the events of the Holocaust. Written by Livia Bitton-Jackson as an adult, the author transports herself back to her teenage years when her world was forever shattered by Nazi designs.

The author, born Elli Friedmann, was thirteen years old when the Nazis invaded Hungary and turned her world upside down. She succinctly details the loss of freedom Jews suffered at the hands of their invaders before they were enslaved in first the ghetto, with concentration camps soon to follow. Elli is miraculously lucky in the fact that she is able to stay with her mother her entire time in the camps; in fact, it is a miracle that she was selected to live at all (as she was only chosen for her golden braids). Bitton-Jackson tells with grave beauty and pain the trials and small triumphs that populated her young world until liberation finally came.

"I Have Lived A Thousand Years" is a bittersweet chronicle of the power of faith and perseverance. The author never lost hope that she would somehow survive the horrors that she witnessed day after day. Her testament is a worthy addition to the literature of the Holocaust, and one that younger readers will be able to identify with.
