Very helpful book
By kathi fincham
I struggle with so much baggage from my past, and then a marriage that fell apart. As I struggled more and more, I fell away from God - if He loved me he wouldn't let all this happen to me - and just dug deeper and deeper into despair. I am only on chapter three of this book, so I can't give it a five star rating yet, but so far it has opened my eyes to the fact that I am not going to get healthy without going back to God. I look forward to the rest.

My one problem with this. First I downloaded the book onto my kindle. As I was reading about the book, I noticed there was a workbook, and I thought that writing stuff out would help, so I ordered it to go along with the book. I was highly disappointed when the workbook arrived, only to be the entire book I had paid to download, with questions at the end of the chapters. Nowhere did I see the description as such. Yes, I love the book, but I feel I was kind of mislead.

thought provoking

It really made me realize that my past feelings of low self esteem and guilt were totally unnecessary and undeserving. I've wasted so many years trying to measure up...always ending up disappointed and depressed. I was terribly critical of myself and others. What a relief it is to finally realize and to understand that I don't have to do this anymore. Even Gods love does not have to be earned; it is a gift.. Freely given with absolutely NO STRINGS ATTACHED! I figure if God really loves us that much, who are we to complain about this person he created. Yes, sometimes there are deep emotional scars and pain in our lives that keep us from connecting with God. If all we've been dealt in life is sorrow and pain we can't possibly know God or feel his presence; anger toward God and others is all we feel. However, at some point in our lives we must forgive those who have wronged us, and forgive ourselves if we had any part in it...only then will we begin to see a brighter future and be open to change. If you are going thru the motions of life but not feeling any joy, I think this book may help you to understand why. At least give it a try...it helped me!

So profound, yet easy to read and understand
By Stefan F.
Wow, amazed at how you this book hits the bullseye and explains so much of many different aspects of damaged emotions, perfectionism, why we do what we do and why things hurt and doesn't work in our lives. Without going into complicate psychological stuff the author has such great experience and can in a few words describe accurately the feelings and reasons and consequences that takes several books for others to explain. And steps to healing.

This book is definitely not only for those who feel they are hurting or those who think of themselves as emotionally damaged. I'm a pretty normal guy with no greater traumas in life, and still this book spoke volumes to me and helped me to understand many things about myself and my feelings. It revealed things in my personality that I have not understood where they came from and also showed me ways to work on these things.

This book really surprised me by how much it meant to me personally and how much of it I can use in counseling and when helping friends.

The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed

From the author of the bestsellers The Disappearing Spoon and The Violinist's Thumb, fascinating tales of the brain and the history of neuroscience.

Early studies of the functions of the human brain used a simple method: wait for misfortune to strike-strokes, seizures, infectious diseases, lobotomies, horrendous accidents-and see how the victim coped. In many cases survival was miraculous, and observers could only marvel at the transformations that took place afterward, altering victims' personalities. An injury to one section can leave a person unable to recognize loved ones; some brain trauma can even make you a pathological gambler, pedophile, or liar. But a few scientists realized that these injuries were an opportunity for studying brain function at its extremes. With lucid explanations and incisive wit, Sam Kean explains the brain's secret passageways while recounting forgotten stories of common people whose struggles, resiliency, and deep humanity made modern neuroscience possible.

From Booklist
Science writer Kean explores the vagaries and inconsistencies of the human brain via diverting stories that chronicle medical science’s fits and starts. To say these are diverting is, however, an oversimplification since their subjects—primarily unfortunate individuals with brain injuries—command sympathy if not empathy. Yet Kean’s focus is on their contribution to the field of neuroscience along with, in too many instances, the misguided misinformation of the medical professionals who treated them. Take the case of France’s King Henry II. When he lost his right eye plus a bit of his brain to a poorly aimed jousting spear, his physicians’ limited knowledge of the brain’s physiognomy cost him his life. Then there’s President Garfield’s assassin, Charles Guiteau, whose undiagnosed bipolar mind was further addled by syphilis and who, naturally . . . thought himself fit for politics. To pick up one of these stories is to lose oneself in them. Where does the brain end and the mind begin? Curious readers will find both brain and mind fully revved up while engaging with this powerfully appealing and thought-provoking work of neuroscience history. --Donna Chavez

Longlisted for the 2015 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award

One of Amazon's Best Books of the Year: Science

One of The A.V. Club's Best Books of 2014

A Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist: Nonfiction

"This is Sam Kean's finest work yet, an entertaining and offbeat history of the brain populated with mad scientists, deranged criminals, geniuses, and wretched souls. The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons is one of those books that will have you following your friends around, reading passages out loud, until they snatch the book away from you and read it for themselves. Good luck getting it back."―Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist

"Put your Netflix queue on hold. Sam Kean's The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons will command your full attention from the first page. It's not just an engaging guide to mysteries of existence; it's compelling story-telling for anyone with a taste for the bizarre and metaphysical."―William Poundstone, author of Rock Breaks Scissors

"In tale after tale, best-selling author Kean provides a fascinating, and at times gloriously gory, look at how early efforts in neurosurgery were essentially a medical guessing game.... Entertaining and quotable, Kean's writing is sharp, and each individual story brings the history of neuroscience to life. Compulsively readable, wicked scientific fun."―Kirkus

"Reading this collection is like touring a museum of neuroscience's most dramatic anomalies, each chapter taking us to a different place and time.... Kean's colloquial language and intimate voice bring all of this series of mini-histories to life -- all of which are sure to stimulate a wide range of brains."―Publishers Weekly

"[Kean] proves an able guide, connecting each story with the science behind it, always with an air of enthusiastic curiosity."―Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe

"[Kean's] strength lies in his storytelling, and in the humane combination of humor and compassion toward the strange life histories he pieces together.... Kean has a penchant for the kind of vivid description that makes one want to clutch one's head tenderly close."―Margaret Quamme, Columbus Dispatch

"To pick up one of these stories is to lose oneself in them. Where does the brain end and the mind begin? Curious readers will find both brain and mind fully revved up while engaging with this powerfully appealing and thought-provoking work of neuroscience history."―Donna Chavez, Booklist

"The author's skill in illuminating how the brain functions and malfunctions manifest themselves in people's lives makes for absorbing reading....These avowals ultimately raise weighty, compelling questions about the nature of identity and what it means to be human."―The Wall Street Journal

"Strokes, seizures, accidents: if they don't kill, they can traumatize the brain so badly that an individual's personality can be significantly changed. But, explains New York Times best-selling author of the terrific The Violinist's Thumb, early neuroscientists saw such traumas as an opportunity to study the brain's wondrous workings."―Library Journal, "Barbara's Picks"

"Beyond paying tribute to the scientific advances these patients made possible, Kean humanizes the patients themselves."―Scientific American

"After tackling DNA and the periodic table in his previous books, Kean has moved on to the human brain, which he dissects via dozens of vivid anecdotes.... His subtle meta touches are a heady delight."―Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly

"Sam Kean can spin a tale as well as any fiction writer....Kean is a rare writer who approaches science writing as a child would a playground at recess. It's a wide-open field full of possibilities, limited only by the surroundings and what our imaginations can do with them."―PopMatters

"In the capable hands of science writer Sam Kean, stories of brain injuries shine just a bit brighter, illuminating not only the interesting characters delivering bedside diagnoses or lying on the examination table, but general principles of scientific discovery that are still relevant today....Kean breathes life into the patients as well as the physicians and scientists tasked with understanding the injuries."―The Scientist

Kean is "science's premier storyteller, the man who regularly turns the history of science into sagas filled with adventure, mystery, fascinating people, and fun."―The Washington Post

"Entrancing.... Sam Kean burrows into the workings of an organ once deemed as unknowable as the far reaches of the galaxy, and does so with boyish charm, accessible language, a prodigious amount of enthusiasm and the sobering realization that throughout history a catastrophic brain injury has ghoulishly been the neuroscientists best friend."―James Macgowan, Toronto Star

"These stories are entertaining....But they're also illuminating, as Kean shows how each one advanced scientific knowledge."―Washingtonian

"Kean delves into a scientific world before modern technology, and tells the stories of people who had sudden changes in personality, felt phantom limbs, pathologically lied, and experienced other mysteries traced back to the brain. He does so with humor and humanity, making the mind-boggling history of neuroscience a fun read."―Nicole Dubowitz, DCist

"Crammed with curious anecdotes from neuroscience's gory past."―Nature

"Mesmerizing.... With a razor-edged wit and intriguing narrative, the pages are easily devoured, all while Kean explores the deepest labyrinths of the brain."―Mellinda Hensley, Los Angeles Magazine

"Dueling Neurosurgeons will confirm Kean's already-solid reputation as a writer who can make anything understandable and interesting.[...] Although hugely entertaining (perhaps especially so in this era of vampire and zombie fascination), Kean's book contains amazingly clear details about our brains."―Winnipeg Free Press

"Engrossing, cleverly narrated."―Simon Lewsen, The Globe and Mail

"Breezy, informal, entertaining stories that link what we now know of the nervous system to events and personalities of the past."―James W. Kalat, American Psychological Association's PsycCRITIQUES

EXCELLENT
By faithful reader
Having read both of Sam's other books already, I was really looking forward to his latest. I was NOT disappointed at all! The research is detailed enough to explain neuroscientific processes without leaving us non science majors deep in the weeds. Sam's writing style incorporates humor into the discussion while providing what seems to be (to me) a primer on the evolution of the discoveries and how those were applied in real life to try to improve patients with Neuro issues. Bravo, Mr. Kean. I will be looking forward to more from you. Highly recommended.

Great Science Writing
By Book Shark
The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness and Recovery by Sam Kean

"The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons" is an excellent collection of stories in neuroscience. Best-selling author and gifted science writer, Sam Kean, provides readers with a real gem. Kean's great eye for captivating stories about the brain and his expertise in retelling these stories end up helping the readers gain an understanding of how the brain works. This fascinating 377-page book is broken out into the following five parts: Part I. Gross Anatomy; Part II. Cells, Senses; Circuits Part III. Body and Brain; Part IV. Beliefs and Delusions; and Part V. Consciousness.

Positives:
1. Science writing at its best. Kean is climbing the echelon of premier popular science authors.
2. Neuroscience is one of my favorite topics and thrilled that a gifted storyteller handled this book.
3. Great format and approach. Each chapter covers an intriguing story about how the brain works yet it flows beautifully as a whole.
4. Plenty of diagrams of parts of the brain and photos that complement this wonderful narrative.
5. Kean excels at keeping it real. He doesn't oversell what we know and keeps the science well grounded in reality.
6. Wonderful gift of narration that includes a well weaved story based on history and good science.
7. Once again, the impact of religion on science rears its head. "In the early 1200s, the Catholic church had declared that no proper Christians, including physicians, could shed blood; physicians therefore looked down upon surgeons as butchers."
8. Love how theories of neuroscience are introduced some are ultimately debunked and others have staying impact. "These findings led Cajal to propose the "neuron doctrine," one of the most important discoveries ever in neuroscience. In brief, Cajal's neurons were not continuous, but had tiny gaps between them. And they transmitted information in one direction only: from dendrite to cell body to axon."
9. The analysis of famous assassins' brains that lead to interesting discoveries.
10. Sometimes asking the right questions are as important as the answers. "Sorting out cause and effect is tricky with brain chemistry: does depression cause changes in brain chemicals, or do changes in brain chemicals cause depression? The street probably runs both ways. But the balance of evidence does suggest that loneliness, isolation, and a sense of helplessness can all deplete neurotransmitters--can poison the soup and sap vital ingredients."
11. Interesting look at how neurons work. "Overall, just as a wagon wheel will carve a rut into the road after repeated journeys, repeated neuron firings will carve ruts into the brain that make signals much more likely to follow some neural tracks than others."
12. How vision works. "In fact, our vision is so biased toward movement that we don't technically see stationary objects at all. To see something stationary, our brains have to scribble our eyes very subtly over its surface. Experiments have even proved that if you artificially stabilize an image on the retina with a combination of special contact lenses and microelectronics, the image will vanish."
13. A look at how the brain maps the body.
14. An interesting look at a number of interesting diseases involving the brain. "They proposed that kuru, scrapie, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob--which all cause "spongiform" brain damage and can all lie dormant for long periods before roaring awake--were caused by a new class of microbes, which they dubbed `slow viruses.'"
15. Excellent examples of specific damages to the brain and its impact. "But around age ten she began suffering from Urbach-Wiethe disease, a rare disorder that petrifies and kills amygdala cells. Within a few years she had two "black holes" where her amygdalae should have been. She hasn't felt a lick of fear since."
16. Many revelations in this book, here is one of my favorites: "Temporal lobe lesions can flip people's sexual orientations from gay to straight (or vice versa), or redirect their sexual appetites toward inappropriate things: common side effects of Klüver-Bucy include zoophilia, coprophilia, pedophilia, and -philias so idiosyncratic they don't have names."
17. A look at what happens when brain processes go awry. "Some delusions run so deep that they fray the very fabric of the victim's universe. With so-called Alice in Wonderland syndrome--a side effect of migraines or seizures--space and time get warped in unsettling ways."
18. The difference between Broca and Wernicke's area. "Generally speaking, a broken Broca's area knocks out speech production, while a wrecked Wernicke's area impairs speech comprehension."
19. By far the best retelling of the over told story of Phineas Gage (it's practically in every book of popular neuroscience). He debunks some myths pertaining to this story, which I found to be quite refreshing.
20. Works cited and so much more...

Negatives:
1. Very little not to like about this book. I would have added a timeline or a table of the greatest contributors of neuroscience as a nice additional bonus.
2. Kean stays away from controversial issues. There is very little on intelligence and as I recall nothing on gender differences. He touches upon social justice with regards to crime and punishment but I sense he holds back.
3. I loved the retelling of Phineas Gage's story but I felt Kean could have done better with the topic of consciousness.

In summary, what a fun way to learn about how the brain works; this is a beautifully written and well-researched book that is a joy to read. Fascinating stories about ordinary people who went through extraordinary circumstances and Kean retells their stories with mastery. A high recommendation! Get this book.

You will be telling friends about this book
By Bob W.
Really the history of the study of the brain, the two neurosurgeons of the title appear relatively briefly at the beginning of the book. This is only right, because they were the first neurosurgeons and lived well over 150 years ago. A lot has happened since then, and this book covers every key moment of it, mostly in terms a non-scientist can understand, and with considerable good humor. There's a lot of good historical background, and the stories of many truly bizzare brain ailments, accidents involving the brain, and just plain oddities. Cases of truly odd behavior are covered in excruciating detail. When you finish this book, you will feel, well, brainier.

Women's Barracks (Femmes Fatales), by Tereska Torres

Originally published in 1950, this account of life among female Free French soldiers in a London barracks during World War II sold four million copies in the United States alone and many more worldwide. The novel is based on the real-life experiences of the author, Tereska Torres. As the Blitz rains down over London, taboos are broken, affairs start and stop, and hearts are won and lost. Women’s Barracks was banned for obscenity in several states and denounced by the House Select Committee on Current Pornographic Materials in 1952 as an example of how the paperback industry was “promoting moral degeneracy.” In spite of such efforts—or perhaps, in part, because of them—the novel became a record-breaking bestseller and inspired a whole new genre: lesbian pulp.

Femmes Fatales restores to print the best of women’s writing in the classic pulp genres of the mid-20th century. From mystery to hard-boiled noir to taboo lesbian romance, these rediscovered queens of pulp offer subversive perspectives on a turbulent era. Enjoy the series: Bedelia; Bunny Lake Is Missing; By Cecile; The G-String Murders; The Girls in 3-B; Laura; The Man Who Loved His Wife; Mother Finds a Body; Now, Voyager; Return to Lesbos; Skyscraper; Stranger on Lesbos; Stella Dallas; Women's Barracks.

From Publishers Weekly
From the Feminist Press's 'Femmes Fatales: Women Write Pulp' series comes this reissue of a long out-of-print 1950 classic, the "first lesbian-themed pulp" novel. Translated from the French (though never published in France), this heavily autobiographical tale of life in the Free French Army women's barracks in WWII London is a delicious blend of sex and melodrama that manages to be sentimental without ever becoming mawkish or campy. It is, in fact, a moving and bittersweet tale of a tight-knit community of women, their loves and losses, hopes and despairs, with a charmingly modest salaciousness that runs through to justify its "pulp" marketing. Truly, it is a more literary novel than the lurid original cover would have one believe-its many sexual encounters invariably veer from the promise of pornography to the achingly real, and often painful, emotional excavations of these women's lives. The edition includes an illuminating interview with the author and an afterword by Judith Mayne that nicely contextualizes the narrative as well as the book's curious publishing history. Kudos to the editors for bringing this lost classic back into print-it never should have left us in the first place.

Excellent book on interpersonal relationships
By Marian
Although this has been billed as "lesbian pulp fiction," that is not a very good description of it. While some of the characters are lesbians, others are straight. The book is, rather, a novel about women and their various relationships--friendships as well as romantic relationships. Very insightful, timeless and free of platitudes. It paints a picture of human interactions and responses during a time of war and deprivation, and is written with compassion and thoughtfulness.

I highly recommend it.

Free French females
By Jim L. Anker
In Britain, the free French army maintains several branches,.one of which is the barracks where the female members live. Forget the lurid cover ( yes, there is some lesbian romance) the book adds to our knowledge of different parts of WWII. Though fiction, it is based on fact by an author who was there. I gave it 5 stars, but it should be 41/2. The authors obituary was recently in the New York Times.

Not what you'd expect; a well written, serious story of women affected by world war II.
By Bob Edelson
l was originally drawn to the book because of its sexual-historical positioning, but found it to be a very well written account of a group of French women war volunteers stuck in London away from their normal lives & loves...and the writing becomes more serious & heartfelt as it moves along, and will bring tears as it comes to a close.

New to Python, not new to programming
By Adam DuVander
I'm an experienced programmer new to Python and finally I have an introduction that is helping me become a more "real" Python programmer. Though I don't need to start from the beginning, it's useful to have the slate clean, as opposed to jumping into the middle with more advanced books. Also, since this book takes a "crash course" approach, it covers a bit of many different approaches: from pure command line to visualizations to web apps. This book has been valuable to me as a coder who happens to be a Python newb, but I'm also looking forward to recommending it as a first programming book, as well.

Wow... An amazing intro to Python...
By MWahl
I have read multiple beginner guides to Python. I am currently up to chapter 11 in Python Crash Course. So far this is far and away my favorite Python programming book. The content is comprehensive, well-explained and well-curated. I only have one complaint and it is minor. The indentation on the online Kindle version is occasionally off. As a workaround, the author consistently points out where indentation is needed. Or you could stick with the paperback edition. On a side note, the age range states 10 and up. It may be a tad ambitious for a 10 year old. Especially since it covers topics such as Django.

I'll write again if my views change after having tackled the projects section. For now I recommend this book whole-heartedly. It is fantastic.

Outstanding Book - Worth the Long Wait
By Michael Cooper
This book is well written for beginners explaining concepts in plain language where others defer to technical jargon too early. I have at least 8 Python books and have trouble reading more than a few pages before checking out. With this one I find I can absorb the concepts easier and tend to keep at it longer. I wish Eric would write a similar book on wxpython - a subject in deep need of addressing for the early learners. Default GUI tools inside Python are simply not what I expected in terms of ease of use and quality.

Mediation: Principles and Regulation in Comparative Perspective, by Klaus J. Hopt, Felix Steffek

Mediation provides an attractive alternative to resolving disputes through court proceedings. Mediation promises just results in the interest of all parties concerned, a reduction of the court caseload, and cost savings for the parties involved as well as for the treasury.

The European Directive on Mediation has given mediation in Europe new momentum by establishing a common framework for cross-border mediation. Beyond Europe, many states have tried in recent years to answer the question whether, and if so, how mediation should be regulated at a national and international level.

The aim of this book is to promote the understanding and discussion of regulatory issues by presenting comparative research on mediation. It describes and analyses the law and practice of mediation in twenty-two countries. Europe is represented by chapters on mediation in Austria, Bulgaria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Spain. The world beyond Europe receives is analysed in chapters on mediation in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Switzerland and the USA.

Against this background, further chapters on fundamental issues identify possible regulatory models and discuss central principles of mediation law and practice. In particular, the work considers harmonisation and diversity in the law of mediation as well as the economic and constitutional problems associated with privatising civil justice. To the extent available, empirical research is used as a point of reference in the critical analysis.

The book is a landmark scholarly contribution to the study of comparative mediation ... The volume edited by Hopt and Steffek adds great value to the existing body of literature on comparative mediation and provides concrete ideas for advancing the cause of promoting mediation on the global stage. The perceptive views on the principles and regulation of mediation and the empirical data provided in the book are a precious resource for legal academics and practitioners alike. Peter C.H. Comparative insights....

INTO MEDIATION WORLDWIDE

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

`Why haven't you mediated?' is fast becoming as common an utterance from the bench in the UK as `why haven't you settled?' And the hapless and somewhat shamefaced clients whether claimants or defendants typically look bemused.

Like so many litigious folk, they have staunchly insisted on having their `day in court' and never for a moment, it seems, have they ever considered mediation as an option. But option it is - and increasingly so. And if you as a practitioner wish to widen your perspective regarding mediation, (particularly if you have international clients) you need this book, recently published in hardback format by OUP.

Within its 1,400 pages, the book places at your fingertips, the accumulated research and commentary on mediation of some thirty learned contributors from jurisdictions around the world.

Describing and analyzing the law and practice of mediation in -- we count twenty-three countries -- this volume presents a wide spectrum of comparative research on mediation, its aim being to promote understanding -- and inspire discussion -- of regulatory issues.

Mediation does offer a number of advantages. As the editors comment, it aims to resolve conflict, ostensibly in the best interests of the parties concerned and of course it reduces court caseloads, freeing up considerable court time and costs both for the parties certainly, not to mention the governments involved.

The book's 25 chapters are grouped under three headings, the first being `fundamental issues; the second, mediation in the European Union-- and in Part III, mediation in the wider world including Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Switzerland and the USA.

The book contains a wealth of resources for research, almost too numerous to mention here, but which include, an index of over twenty pages, copious footnoting and at the end of each of the chapters, extensive lists of literature, legal resources, legal instruments and web resources, all facilitating easy reference to the relevant research materials.

Interestingly, the book began as an embryonic idea which emanated for the most part from the Max Planck Institute which was commissioned by the German Ministry of Justice in 2007 to prepare a comparative expert report against the background of the European Mediation Directive and which ultimately formed the basis for the (then) new German mediation law.

We are summarizing here, but along with a host of other institutions and individuals the idea emerged of publishing a book for English-speaking readers - and here it is; an enlightening and up to date comparative insight into mediation law across a wide range of international contexts.

If you or your colleagues are involved in any aspect of mediation, or for that matter, any form of dispute resolution, this book may well prove a revelation. The law is stated as of 1 June 2012.

Review
"Mac is a grief-stricken father in mid-life about to have an extraordinary experience with God. His great sadness began four years ago on a weekend camping trip, when his 6-year-old daughter, Missy, was murdered. What he couldn't know then, but is about to learn, was God’s purpose for Missy's death. Roger Mueller's clear, gentle voice characterizes Mac's family with high-spirited joy and laughter. His portrayal of Missy's animated excitement makes her especially believable. His polished performance of grief-stricken Mac brings tears. With empathy and sensitivity, Mueller captures the mysterious voices of those who have invited Mac to the now abandoned, yet transformed, cabin in the wilderness. This compelling fantasy explores themes of love, loss, and blame."

Three words...
By michael
I have three words to describe the book. Credulous, fatuous and appalling. I will expand each of these in turn. SPOILER ALERT!! To review this book I will reveal important events in the book. Some readers may wish to skip this review if one plans to read "The Shack". The book opens with an introduction where the author claims to have been told this story first hand by his long time friend, Mack, the protagonist. This is I believe presented as a factual account, not a plot device. This seems credulous as the story which follows is extremely fantastic. For me it has no creditability. The plot of the book is Mack and his family taking a vacation at a lakeside camp ground in Oregon. Mack's six year old daughter, Missy, is abducted and murdered, presumably raped. Three years later Mack finds a note in his mailbox inviting him to return to the shack, the scene of the murder. This note is from "Papa", Mack's wife's moniker for god. Mack decides to accept the invitation. He arrives shack to find it not a decrepit hunting cabin, but a fully livable home. Also although it is deep in a Oregon forest, in the dead of winter, the property, about an acer, is in full, riotous summertime bloom. Mack is greeted at the cabin door by a black woman clearly modeled on clichés of an antebellum black nanny. This woman turns out to be god! (one would think this gender shifting sinful) Jesus is there, a mid-eastern carpenter/handyman, (very creative) and the holy spirit is a ephemeral Asian woman, all nicely PC. The he/she god bustles around the kitchen making pies, whipping up piles of greens and veggies. They tree live together in perfect domestic tranquility and can share a good family laugh when Jesus drops a bowl of pancake batter. All this seems rather fatuous. It is also curious that Papa created this bubble of lush, bountiful bloom, all the food is homegrown, just for Mack but neglects to provide bountiful crops for say, drought ravaged areas of Africa. This seems a shabby use of divine power. After a meal one evening Jesus and Mack set out for a walk, the point of which is to talk about Missy's death privately. Jesus assures Mack he was with Missy the whole time and that Missy prayed for her family and was, "very brave", which he offers to the grieving father as spurious comfort. This is appalling! Here is Jesus, supposedly god incarnate riding along with an abducted child, which knows will be murdered, likely raped, and does nothing to save her! What human man would in such a situation not try to save the child? All Jesus does is ride along. But then he did nothing about the Inquisition, witch craze, sordid church corruption... so what is one child? This is where I have stopped reading. I'm uncertain if I'll toss this book into the closet unfinished or try to endure to the end.

Especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, but doesn't replace actual disciplined study of the bible
By Bradley Bass
This is an allegory about the nature of God and His relationship to Man, similar in kind to “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. As with all allegories, it can enlighten truths in a short paragraph that may not be understood in a long chapter of theology. Unfortunately, allegories also have the weakness of being like a “graphic novel” compared to a true novel, simplifying or paraphrasing original material (in this case, the Bible) to the point of distortion.

Things I Liked:
- The depiction of the Trinity as a joyful internal relationship of love, which God desires to share with us.
- The deep love of God for Man (with love manifest differently through each of the Trinity), full of sacrifice and joy, without condemnation.
- A reasonably engaging plot to explore the topics.

Things I Didn’t Like:
- The “romping” good humor of the Trinity for each other and Man was over the top for me. There was no room for “Fear of the Lord” in this story, at all.
- No real iscussion of hell, except to say God wants us all to be with Him.
- Some minor eco-babble, man-bashing, use of the math concept of “fractals”, etc. were annoying.
- Some, mostly minor, points of theology were just wrong in my opinion.

I think this book would be especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, or for those that carry anger/resentments for wrongs done to them. So, this book can take its place with other recent Christian-pop books like “Wild at Heart” and “A Purpose-Driven Life” that have proven meaningful to some. Just don’t make the mistake that it replaces more disciplined study of the scriptures and serious books of theology that illuminate a greater portion of the Word. If asked to defend your faith, or wondering yourself wht the scriptures say about a topic, you can’t say, “I read something about that in ‘The Shack!’” On the other hand, allegories are the equivalent to parables, and we know Someone that was pretty effective in using those to teach deep concepts through illustrations.

Gut wrenching storyline
By Pam T.
Spoiler alert: A lot of people really love this book. It was well written & the author went into great detail to explain his perception of God. If you believe in an invisible force that contains pure love, does not judge & only wants your love in return, then this book is for you. It seems I am not there yet. I could not get past the death of an innocent child at the hands of a serial killer even though the main character is released from the great sadness of losing his previous child by forgiving her killer. I was depressed for days after reading this story. I understand the concept that forgiveness can release victims from the negative emotional attachment to their agressors. Maybe if I also had the experience of actually meeting God in his three forms in person, I too would come to understand more fully the meaning of unconditional love. In the meantime, I will continue living my life by being as kind as I can be to all I meet. However, if I were to meet anyone abusing a child, I might just feel the need to kick them in their private area, then call the police.
