Given the ever-increasing speed and memory size available to computer scientists, Moravec, who founded Carnegie Mellon's major robotics program, predicts that artificial intelligence will exceed human intelligence by 2050. He argues further that it is only a matter of time before we have computer simulations that will substitute for human functionality. (Yes, robots will take over the work force, but ultimately humans will benefit from a fully automated economy.) Moravec considers the various arguments, philosophical and otherwise, that have been made regarding whether computers can "think" and devotes a fair amount of coverage to questions Turing raised 50 years ago. His comparison of libraries to knowledge bases is simplistic?apparently, Moravec doesn't see any intellectual component to cataloging?but overall his interpretations are imaginative and his arguments interesting if not always convincing. Automation and quality of life

The best book on the future of robotics and automation! However, Hans believes robots are our wonderful mind children and should grow into powerful machines that evolve quickly past us. He is then horrified that some humans may transform themselves into machines and become very dangerous. Why won't his mind children be just as dangerous or more dangerous? At least a mind-transferred human might seek pleasure and fun. While Hans' logical AI robots make their galactic invasion plans!

Why not engineer automation to its pleasure giving limits? Instead of giving robots a high quality of life, design automation to increase EVERYONE quality of life and wealth on Earth???

Fantastic and imaginary!
This has a stodgy slow start covering the early years of robotics. But after this the book goes off with a bang. The self professed psychics fundamentalist expands a potential robotic future from basic principles. A thoroughly enlightening read.

I was asked by a friend to set up a qmail server as a test and if i could deploy one it could lead to potential employment. (it did for a contract.) This book was an immense help for me and it helped me land a job.

Outstanding instructional book on installing and using qmail

My first edition copy of this book is dog-eared and full of bookmarks. This is an excellent tutorial on installing and using qmail. It includes step-by-step instructions for each task involved in setting up and administering (as well as customizing) qmail. Great text. Highly recommended. You don't need to be a Linux expert to install qmail if you follow this guidebook.

This book is exactly what it say it is, a qmail handbook.

Using this book, I was able to setup qmail and get it running without a hitch. I loved the layout of the book. Basically Sill gets right down to the task of why you bought the book- installing qmail. You can read "ahead" on the chapters and then walk through or you can simply walk through the book following the chapters and install qmail. The Appendices at the end where great. I personally suggest reading through these BEFORE you start the 1st chapter, but that is my own prefference.

The Appendices cover topics like "How qmail works", "qmail features", "Gotchas", etc. However, they are appendices so you can read them if you want to. Unlike the Sendmail bat book, where you have to wade through understanding internet mail and such, these are at the end in Sills book. It is a matter of prefference, but I would still recommend you read them (Especially the part on how qmail works!!!).

If you are new to qmail, and need to setup a server without straining you eyes on a computer screen, this is the book you need. It covers using qmail as your imap/pop server, as a external mail relay (a must for keeping your internal Exchange server secure), mailing lists, anti-spam, webmail, and many more features. This is really the only book you need if you are running qmail.

A great, fun read

As a foodie I was curious about this book. Not only is it entertaining with its little blurbs before each recipe but it does have excellent snack ideas. Easy snacks, a little more involved snacks to make ahead, sauces, teas, sweets, how to dry things in the microwave, curries, potpies, butters, how to do your own mixes and condiments, Mexican, Asian, Italian, bread, rolls, waffles, crepes, salads, beverages, homemade yogurt, etc. He covers it all. I found some clever ideas even for a seasoned foodie such as myself. My oven was down so, craving pizza, I made some Eng. muffin pizzas - so good. Also love the "Schmageggies," which is basically your homemade breakfast sandwich. I did mine on a deep, delicious multi-grain roll and toasted the insides that you have to hollow out and sprinkled them around the sandwich - very filling. I hope he does a second volume. He could get even more guest contributions! This is a fun book - would make a great gift too. For the foodie who has everything! A good little primer to keep handy. And lets hear from John B. and Geo. K. in volume two, lol!

Regular cook book. Not a very good coast to coast theme.

It's more of a cook book with George Norry's name plastered on the front. I don't see snacks. Mainly big meals. They were't even very creative in naming the dishes with a coast to coast theme. The recipies are not coast to coast or snack themed.

Cookbook, yes. Expectation, well...

I'm a big fan of George Noory, and have even speculated that could be me had I stayed in broadcasting way back when. I'm also a good food hobbyist and have been cooking since about age ten, when my mom taught me how to fry an egg. If I had had the chance to look at this book first, I wouldn't have bought it. What I was expecting was a really unique take on snacks - like how to take advantage of already made things, like chips combined with...something we wouldn't normally think of. As it turns out, this is a book full of serious recipes which take serious preparation. I guess I was misled by the connotation of "snack" - something you can grab and eat quickly, like fruit, or chips & dip. Anyone can "snack" on fried chicken, or heat up mac and cheese, but I wouldn't put them in a book of "late night snacks." You have to do a lot of prep for those dishes. Review: Estate and Trust Administration for Dummies, Exec Summ: Excellent!

In reviewing the "Estate & Trust Administration for Dummies" book, I should disclose that I am a financial planner. While I may be a dummy, I've found this series is rarely dumb, often insightful and sometimes downright terrific. This Edition (if that's the right word, it is the 2nd edition but I mean this book) is well written, comprehensive and plain-language-clear.
The book is not written for professionals necessarily, but it does cover a lot of ground that a professional should know or ought to be reminded of. It is thorough and as a professional, I expect I will review parts of it in the future as a clear reference guide.
The first section of the book covers fiduciary standards with regard to estate/trust administration. It is coming from the viewpoint that the reader may become the administrator or executor of an estate upon someone's passing and what they need to know. It talks about understanding and extent of duties, how estates work, identifying different types of trusts (yep, there's a lot of them!) It also talks about the professionals that are needed (or sometimes not needed) in administering to an estate (not just the lawyer and tax accountant) and how to practice diligent responsibilities in executing the estate.
The second section is a timeline, more or less. When you have an estate, the process is conducted in a very specific order. First probate, then determination of assets and valuation, prepping a probate inventory, paying expenses (including paying off the beneficiaries who have likely been chomping at the bit for 9 months expecting a check) and, finally, closing of the estate.
The next section is specific to trusts, understanding the trustee's duties, how the trust can or will be funded, how its assets are invested. During the life of the trust, there are key responsibilities that include accounting (principal vs. income), paying of beneficiaries, tax filings and, possibly, a termination of trust once its purpose is fulfilled. These duties can be time consuming, expensive and nerve-wracking. The book does a good job of summarizing in such a way that a trustee is aware of what they need to know and how to execute their responsibilities. This is, in my humble opinion, the best section of the book.
The last part of the book is devoted to taxes, the preparation of a final 1040, an Estate Tax Return, returns for decedent estates or trusts and K-1 reporting. A little dry, but the author does a good job of keeping the reader awake and engaged.
All in all, the book is an excellent primer on the topic and I recommend it strongly for anyone who may become either an executor or a trustee. If you are working with someone who will be acting as a corporate trustee, this is also a very good read. It may not give you all the answers that you want (that would take a law degree and years of experience) but it will lead you to ask the right questions.

Comprehensive and informative

If you know very little about the responsibilities of forming and administering a trust, this book can help get you up to speed - as well as explain when you should seek additional advice from experts. The authors understand that one book is unlikely to cover all situations. But having faced the process of estate distribution after the death of a relative, I'm amazed by how much information the authors have covered in this book. Even after my own experience, I still discovered plenty of new information in this comprehensive volume. I only wish I'd known most of it much earlier. It could have prevented significant obstacles after my relative's death.

With 60 years of experience in administering estates and trusts, the authors have gained an impressive body of knowledge. Using accessible language, they share both the common and unusual scenarios that personal representatives of an estate could face. And everything is designed to eliminate confusion, although I did review some key parts several times (but I'm the type to check and double check information anyway).

I found the book to be an excellent reference. With 5 sections and 22 chapters, it might be an overwhelming task to try to read the entire book in one fell swoop. Luckily, as the authors point out, it isn't meant to be read cover to cover. For example, if you only want to learn about funding a trust or liquidating assets, you can focus on those particular topics and review other material later.

There is basic info - how to take the first steps after a death, navigating probate, closing an estate - as well as more unique situations. Readers are also given a "heads up" about the more unusual pitfalls of estates and trusts, with a special warning symbol next to pertinent sections. I found this very helpful and it kept me from bypassing crucial material.

A book review can't list all the information contained in this volume. I'd have to write an essay - or more - to do justice to everything here. But I can note some topics which caught my attention. I was particularly intrigued by the state by state compilation of the Intestacy Rules as well as deadlines for state estate taxes. They can vary significantly from one state to the other. The list for prioritizing payments for an estate and deciding which claims should be paid first could save significant time.

Of course the rules for estate administration are likely to change over time but the basic types of trusts, from grantor to irrevocable, tend to follow certain guidelines. Estate and Trust Administration for Dummies would have been extremely useful to have on hand when my relative died. It is equally worth reading now. I did seek help from an expert in trust administration and would certainly urge readers of this book to heed the authors' advice about when to do the same.

All the material falls into 5 broad sections: getting started with estate and trust administration, administering the estate, operating revocable and irrevocable trusts, paying taxes and the rules of tens (ten pitfalls, ten types of taxes that might have to be paid). Within those general categories is the kind of helpful advice which can provide reassurance when faced with the responsibility of administering trusts and estates. Highly recommended.

Helpful guide to practical aspects of Trust administration

This text may be very helpful to anyone who has suddenly or unexpectedly been thurst into the role of Trustee, executor, or administrator for example, upon the passing of a family member who has entrusted them to settle their estate. It may also be useful to a Trustee designated to handle other types of trusts for example a Life Insurance Trust.

Although the practice has largely been delegated to attorneys in the past, there is no necessary reason why family members cannot perform these functions. This book explains the language, terms, and procedures to help administer such a trust. To this end, the book is focused on typical examples of decisions and actions that trustees, executors, and administrators might need to make. For this audience the book is nominally sufficient to supply to a potential trustee, for example, to introduce them to the role and expectation of the commitment involved.

What the book does not do at all is to really explain why trusts (of various types) are used in the first place. Trusts are a valuable tool in estate planning. A well organized estate plan, including trusts and other instruments, can go a long way to preserve peace of mind and peace in a family where there is a clean plan for assets, responsibilities (duties), and benefits (beneficiaries). In failing to provide the rationale, the book also fails to explain how to select trustees or executors.

This book is therefore limited in its value to the audience identified above, and is not particularly useful for those engaged in estate planning (planning their own estate), setting up trusts, identifying trustees, etc. The book would have been far more valuable if had provided guidance as to the rationale for the instruments and the selection of parties (trustees, executors, administrators), etc.

With the assistance of books like this, it is possible for family members or friends to help manage trusts, but this book is not designed to and does not provide the proper guidance for determining what kind of trust you need and how to set it up. Although attorney costs can be significant, those costs are minor in comparison to the cost of even a simple error or mistake. Buy this book to read to learn more, but not as a substitute for experienced counsel.

If you're picking up a Haynes Manual, you know what you're getting into. There are some pictures, but not quite enough. Helps you get through some of those tricky spots when replacing things like the ball joints, axles, etc. This thing is kind of required if you own a rig, IMO. If they print one, get one. It'll help any DIY mechanic.

This book tries to do too much. I needed to change my oil pressure sending unit in my Dakota and there is no reference to an oil pressure sending unit much less a picture of one in this book. A waste of time and money.

About the Author
Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services and Counseling at California State University at Fullerton. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California. He is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; and a National Certified Counselor. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17, Counseling Psychology; and Division 49, Group Psychotherapy); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Both Jerry and Marianne Corey received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and both also received the Eminent Career Award from ASGW in 2001. Dr. Jerry Corey was given the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from California State University at Fullerton in 1991. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling and ethics in counseling. He is the author or coauthor of 15 textbooks in counseling currently in print, along with more than 60 journal articles and book chapters.

MANUAL

It was not very helpful for the class, but I'm using it as a study guide for state board. I feel that it may be helpful because it's the shorter version and a lot less reading.

Great book for future counselors

The book was in excellent condition and very helpful for those who want to go into depth with the case study in the textbook and for developing ways to become a great counselor or interventionist. However, it was not the book that I needed for my class.

Good Book!

This book is a great addition to the Theory and Practice of Counseling text book. It breaks down each theory into shortened sections that the text book has. It also has vocabulary words with definitions and case study examples of each theory. Very easy to read and great for a quick refresher on each of the theories. There is also a self assessment for each theory.
